Rich has gotten on this classic rock kick and I have no idea if or when he’ll ever play Symphonic Metal again. Maybe check out other review channels who are more interested in groups like Epica. Kel's eye opening moment happened very similarly to mine. Back in 2003 or so when I was trying to discover all of these underground bands, I kept hearing the growls and I just hated them. I made fun of them for trying to sound like the cookie monster. Even though Epica is one of my favorites today, I actually didn't like them at first because of the growls. But then for some reason one day I read the lyrics for Cry for the Moon and suddenly the growls made perfect sense. There is no better way to express the anger and frustration at injustice in that song than to do the screams. They make the song better, and are an integral part of the swinging between extremes that Epica is known for. Going to listen to that Caligula song now. BTW nice Pendragon shirt.

Hello, nice to have you fixated on Melodic Progressive metal for the time being. :) If it be so, you cannot do without reacting to some SEVENTH WONDER - a Swedish supergroup of music alchemists led by KAMELOT's Tommy Karevik, who shows on his first band that he can do so much more than imitate Roy Khan's charismatic croon. :)) It is tough with their output, as is with some of the greatest bands - you could basically recommend the entire discography as must-listen. For starters, please consider "The Great Escape" and "Farewell (Pt. 1 - Tiara's Song)". They are both part of a futuristic story line (from a spiritual human perspective) that the band have going in the last couple of albums. Then, somewhere in time ;), you ought to do a full album of theirs called "Mercy Falls". I did not even suggest a single song from it, as it's a tightly-knit concept, and the complete songs range from emotionally engaging through awesome to life-changing. I could go on, but many words seldom do justice. \m/

Epica are masters of "stacking the changes", changing rythmes, tones, textures at surprising moments in such a way that is does not distract but adds to the music and makes it interesting and builds or releases the tension. They are really master composers in that sense.
