Being an Odia ,I'm sharing what we have grown up reading and listening to the stories passed from one generation to another. The Kalinga war was one of the deadliest wars that was ever fought in Indian soil. The casualties from both the sides were countless (kalinga lost its 100,000 bravehearts). As it was fought next to the Daya River in Dhauli hills,it was believed the colour of water changed to Red for days ( we all know river water flows & to remain red ,we all can imagine the number of deaths). Even though Ashoka won that war ,the scene of dead bodies on the river bank,the family crying over their dear ones,the destruction,the aftermath of war on Kalinga & it's people etc made a huge impact on him. In today's time,there is a Shanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda) in Dhauligiri from where you can see that river.

He can't be compared with Aurangzeb because they both had different situations. Ashoka and his mother were marginalised by the royal family and weren't treated well. He was made fun of his looks. Aurangzeb had no such traumas. He was a born radical and cruel. Ashoka cared for his people. Aurangzeb only cared for himself and sowed more religious discord between the two religious groups.

​@@Malecchavinashak It is not true since birth Aurangzeb was seen as a spare child of shah jahan since he had 2 sons prior to him, dara shikoh was immensely loved by shah jahan and mumtaz while shah suja was jahangir favourite grandchild, murad the 4 th son was considered darling of their parents because he was the youngest, shah jahan many a time commented on Aurangzeb body that he is weak and fragile, one incident that showed how little Aurangzeb mattered to his father was when shah jahan was in rebellion against his father he went to Bengal to take shelter and he decided to leave 6 year old Aurangzeb alone there in Custody of Bengal subedar so that they may help him for army and money, he didn't thought of doing this with dara shikoh at any cost, after a while nur jahan dememded 1 of shah jahan sons along with dara shikoh to be sent to them for protection that Time shah jahan told his brother in law shaista Khan to protect dara shikoh at all cost, he never mentioned about Aurangzeb safety. Even after growing up shah jahan made him subedar of deccan while his other brothers got gujrat ( murad) suja ( Bengal ) dara ( punjab ) as compared to these places deccan was the most unstable and least revenue generating province, not just that Aurangzeb was sent to uzbekistan when his brother murad couldn't stand the cold weather there, he was sent to khandhar and when he failed shah jahan demoted him and he was insulted and made dara shikoh go there when dara shikoh failed shah jahan threw a party for him.dara shikoh son had the same rank as Aurangzeb in the court, there are many things that went wrong with Aurangzeb though it can't be considered a justification for whatever he did but it did shaped him a person.
