सातवाहन महाराष्ट्र पर शासन करने वाला पहिला क्षत्रिय मराठा राजवंश था सातवाहन मूल रूप से महाराष्ट्र के पुणे के जुन्नर के पास अंदर मावल के रहने वाले थे यह अंदर मावल आंध्रा नदी के किनारे बसा हुआ है इसलिए उनको आंध्रभृत्य या आंध्र सातवाहन कहा गया उसके श्रीमुख सातवाहन ने खुद को स्वतंत्र घोषित करने के बाद प्रतिष्ठान पुरी यानी पैठण को जीता और पैठण को मुख्य राजधानी बनाया और जुन्नर को उपराजधानी और उनके बाद साथ करने प्रथम ने आंध्रप्रदेश का अपना साम्राज्य विस्तार किया उसके बाद गौतमीपुत्र सातकर्णी के पिता शिवस्वाती के समय जब विदेशी शको महाराष्ट्र पर आक्रमण किया तब उनको कुछ समय के लिए अपने राजधानी जुन्नर को छोडकर आंध्रप्रदेश मे जाना पडा तब उन्होंने कुछ समय तक आंध्रप्रदेश के उस समय के धरणीकोट यानी आज के अमरावती को राजधानी बनाया फिरू शिवस्वाती के पुत्र गौतमीपुत्र सातकर्णी ने इन विदेशी शको का नाशिक गोवर्धन में युद्ध मे पराभव किया शको के राजा नहपान का शिरच्छेद किया और शको का साम्राज्य नष्ट किया और इस विजय की खुशी में उन्होंने शालिवाहन शक हिंदू कालगणना की शुरुवात की और राजधानी प्रतिष्ठान पुरी यांनी पैठण में एक विजय स्तंभ का भी निर्माण करवाया जो आज भी पैठण में स्थित है जिसे आज तीर्थखाम कहा जाता है आज के क्षत्रिय मराठा के 96 क्षत्रिय कुल मे से शिर्के सालवे भोईटे विचारे यह 4 कुल के मराठा सातवाहन राजवंश के वंशज है

Chhatrapati Shivaji was the first Maratha ruler. Before him, the region now known as Maharashtra was ruled by the Muslim sultans and partly by Mughal rulers. Before them, this region was ruled by Yadavas, before them Kalyan Chalukya, before them Rashtrakutas, all from Karnataka. Hence Maharashtrians are so proud of Chhatrapati Shivaji.
