Shasanka defeated the kamrup Kingdom and captured both their princes yet sent them home as a good will. The varman themselves records that shasanka not only had a strong infantry, cavalry and elephants but a very strong navy also. There is not recorded of rajyavardhan ever defeating shasanka but there is evidence of peace talk failing between them. He was shaivite no wonder Buddhists exaggerated in defaming shasanka......and banabhatta was the court poet of Harsha....it's evident he too was trying to please his petron......he was an undefeated king for the combined force of Harsha and kamrup.... please stop character assassination by only relying on bana and hiuen sang.

Distorted information. Neither Rajyavardhan nor Harshavardhan ever defeated Shashanka in any battle! Neither Shashanka flew from the battle ground against Harshavardhan. There was no concrete evidence that confirmed that Shashanka killed Rajyavardhan in a peace meeting. These details were given by only Hiuen Tsang and Bhanvatta, who are known to be close friends of Harshavardhan.

Rajyavardhan was killed in a direct battle with Shashank. After defeating Huna Rajyavardhan was overconfident of winning and charged with his contingent towards Kannauj where he was successful in defeating One ally of Shashank but when Shashank reached the spot overconfident Rajyavardhan again attacked the forces of Shashank who were on the higher ground and has an advantage thus falling to the hell of arrows and bringing his end. Shashank had to withdraw from Kannauj because of the spread of Cholera in his forces and news of Buddhist subjects in his kingdom revolting against him due to his adventures against Buddhist patron Pushyabhuti. Thus Shashank retreated without engaging with Harsha and crushed the Buddhist revolt in Bihar region. Though he was later defeated by Bhaskar Varman of Kamrup he maintained a strong relation to Pulakeshi II and provided his forces against Harsha's expansionism.

Like the Pala Empire of Bengal, the first ruler in this dynasty was elected, which probably explains the name of this dynasty "Pala". But unlike the Palas of Bengal, who were Buddhists, the Palas of Kamarupa were Hindus. The Hindu orthodoxy drew their lineage from the earlier Varman dynasty and thus ultimately from Narakasura i.e. Bhauma dynasty. The dynasty is unrelated to the previous Varman and Mlecchna dynasties. Koch kings patronised Assamese language and culture. Koch heroes Naranarayan, Chilarai etc. are regarded as Assamese heroes too. There are many Koch people in Assam call themselves Assamese today.
