I live in Louisiana & my Mom used to have a poinsettia that she maintained for years. She would repot her plant in Spring & place it underneath an oak tree for shade. It would remain there until like September, early October. She would pinch off the old growth & it would bloom new green leaves like crazy. By Thanksgiving the plant would start turning it's top leaves to red. It rebloomed for years & got huge. She would just repot it in Spring & allow it to enjoy the outside fresh air under that oak tree for about 9 months or so. She would also use Jobe's fertilizer spikes like a month or so before she brought it inside. Beautiful plant.

My family has passed the same plant to our mom for three years at Christmas. It spends the spring and summer in our greenhouse and the winter at grandma’s house. It turns back green gradually then just before December it starts turning red and is ready for granny by Christmas. It’s getting big!😆

After Christmas last year there was one dumped by the side of the road still in those horrible wrappers they sell them in which is the death of most of them and I took it home. It was basically a dried out twig. I planted it in a pot with good soil and this Christmas as soon as the weather dipped a little it rebloomed ❤

I work at a greenhouse and we put them in sleeves to keep them warmer on the drive home. Going from a warm greenhouse to the outside cold can be a big shock to them, and you’re not supposed to keep them in the sleeve for that long

I live in Michigan an have kept one of these alive for about 10 years! It loves to be outside during the warm summer months and grows like crazy. It starts to look a little shabby and drops leaves during the winter months. I’m going to try a humidifier next to it... also the 15 hours of darkness. This plant loves to bloom during the end of June until the end of August

I don’t get why it’s so hard for the host to just use the word “Christmas.” It’s not a plant for “the holidays” (i.e. it’s not a New Year plant, it’s a Christmas plant); it’s for one holiday. Even in its native Mexico it’s translated name is “Christmas Eve Flower.” By trying not to offend it becomes offensive since the entire purpose of the holiday (that this plant represents) is a religious one.

I have one that is 13 years old and 2 others that are 10 and 8 years old. I kept them in the same pots with the coloured sleeve on the outside of the pots. I have them in a west facing window in southern Ontario, Canada. They oldest one is about 5 ft tall now. I never repotted them until this past summer. Very seldom did I fertilize them as well. I admit that I probably overwatered a lot. Two are red and the other one is a white poinsettia. They would bloom the colours in April or May but finally this Christmas, they bloomed the beautiful colours. They have smaller mostly green leaves but splattered with colour throughout. I don’t do anything but water every few days and leave on the same table in the window all year round. People are amazed when they come over and see them.

Hi from Malaysia 🇲🇾 I’m a big fan of poinsettia since my university time in the states… we have quite a wide range of poinsettia varieties here : Red, pink, yellow and even white which i bought 1 pot from the nearby nursery! The tropical temperature here in Nov - Dec - Jan is around 30C (day 86F) and 26C (night 77F). I reckon it is ok to leave the plant overnight at the balcony as it’s naturally ventilated, airy and completely pitch dark! I only water it every other day due to the humid climate here. Thanks for your useful tips and wishing you a blessed and Merry Christmas in advance 🎅 🥳

I got a few poinsettias a few years ago and I've kept them growing ever since! I let one grow just out of curiosity and in the ~2 years I've had it, it's grown to be ~6ft tall, purely from being indoors and watering when it needs it. I haven't really tried to maintain the red leaves, but they are honestly very nice plants when they're just green too!

Poinsettias come in other colors than just red. There are pink, white & variegated ones as well. I’ve got a variegated poinsettia I picked up last year at one of our local nurseries, it was transplanted to a large vessel & sits by the front door. Watering is important and drainage is critical, but don’t let them dry out.

Mine have been planted in the ground for close to 3 years now. They are on the north side of my house and get a lot of bright sun, no direct sun but a lot of wind. I live in zone 9 where the heat can go well over 100°. Last February we had one of the hardest freezes that lasted days. I was so sure my poinsettias were doomed. Well, I gotta tell you they survived and have grown to be over 4’ tall. I was going to get up to do something more productive than watching KZbin for an hour...but then your video appeared. My mother has had a poinsettia for 2-3 years now and this year it's leaves started turning red without any direct influence from us shortly before Thanksgiving. For most of the year it sits outside in bright, indirect light but is currently blooming in a temporary greenhouse. The red bracts are not as prominent not having been forced but it's beautiful nonetheless. I also love that it's in the euphorbia family since I have a number of its succulent cousins in my collection.

Dad likes to sit up at nights. So do I. Both plants have been getting a lot of light from our lamps at night. And they've been growing like crazy. So - my theory is, they LOVE light. yes, as green plants, none of that fancy-colored leaves, but still :-)

Thank you, I like your material very much. Where is your video on making a hole (drainage) in the decorative pot and cheap pot episodes? I didn't see them linked.

Hello Kevin! I am really enjoying all your videos recently as I live locally in the 10a zone and have just begun really gardening. I watched this video and am confused because I purchased a beautiful Costco 4 pack of these and although 3 still look amazing one died back almost immediately. I have always thought they were cold weather plants and use them in our outdoor decore during the Christmas season and they typically do well. I’m understanding from your videos that maybe I’ve just gotten lucky in the past. I’d like to keep the ones I’ve purchased this year and will prob watch this a hundred times lol. I am very intrigued with your comment about what to do with your real tree after Christmas to use it in your garden... I intend to do some crafting with ours but I’d like to know what your ideas are as well!!! I guess using dropped needles as mulch or something along those lines... help! My poor tree is dead and it needs to go soon!!

When we moved into our rental home in Germany there was a pot on the back patio that was left by the military members that had rented it before. I was a stick in a pot so I never paid it any attention. Winter came and then spring came and we decided to clear the patio area so we could enjoy it when I came home from the base. I saw the pot and started to pick it up and toss it but it had this tiny little leaf on it. I told my wife that this plant wanted to live so I re-potted it and took care not to over water. I placed it in the window of our dining room and on a marble window sill that was over the heating radiator for that part of the house. It grew and grew until it had reached about 12 inches before the next winter came. During the winter we would always open that huge window just a small little bit and the cold moist air would float into the house and as it did it wafted through the plant. I was totally unequipped on how to take care of a poinsettia so I was just flying with what I felt was right. I knew that it was originally a tropical plant but it seemed to have weathered the first winter just fine and now it kept growing and by Thanksgiving it had grown to almost 2 1/2 feet in height and 3 feet+ in diameter. The entire plant had turned red except a small band of green leaves near the bottom. The Germans were just fascinated by that plant and would stop in front of our house everyday just to see its growth and progress. After the winter I received orders to go back to the States and could not take it with me so my wife and I decided to share in our joy of all of the plants that I had raised from cuttings that I had swapped with others (we had 70 varieties of plants around our house so we didn't lack fresh air or beauty in our home. So we decided to give all of our plants to our neighbor across the street. And when it came to the poinsettia we took it first and asked her husband if she wanted them? She did. It was the poinsettia that took up her front window because I had found the secret. The radiator kept the roots warm and the cold moist air kept the leaves moist. Coming back to the states I keep asking people if I can have their poinsettias before they completely die. I was shocked at how many people will not part with their poinsettias until it is completely dead and gets thrown away.

Kept mine for years! I would bring it out in summer. For flowering purposes put it in my closet pull it out put it back. A real PIA 😂 I eventually let her go. Didn’t have the space she was about two feet at that point very beautiful and put a lot of effort into her.

I've been trying to do what needs done to make them change color but don't know if I started early enough. Oh that time lapse of the poinsettia shriveling made we want to cry. I've seen where people have planted Norfolk island pines (sold as a Christmas decoration) outside and it survived the winters. Wish I could try a poinsettia outside but doubt it'd survive 5b/6a. 🎄

I see light blue artificial coloured plants sold a lot near me :( Then my friends and family wonder why their blue plants turn pink or purple. I'd much rather buy a natural colour and have the plant be what it wants to be 🤷‍♀️

Good timing just bought my poinsettias and am going to try to make them last all year. We have a Christmas tree growing in our back yard which we did not plant. Not sure how it got there. Thinking maybe a bird, wind, or perhaps when we took out last years Christmas tree.
