I’ve kept mine alive from last year, with really no issues, though I find they need a lot of water, otherwise they tend to droop. I also researched how to get them to bloom again, but that 16 hrs of nighttime kind of threw me 😔 way more commitment than I was expecting. I actually find the normal leaves beautiful even without the colored ones. The soft velvety leaves have a ethereal quality all by themselves 🥰

I agree, mine is so dramatic if not watered regularly, but also does not like wet feet. I have found that putting it in a pot with a gap and then a water reservoir and having the roots grow into the reservoir helps. this keeps the soil less moist but gives the plant constant access to water. I think an easier way to do the photo period thing is to put it in a dark closet with a grow light on a timer. There is no way I will remember to put the plant in and out of the dark spot at the same time every day.

I'm so happy that I've managed to keep mine from last year for the first time. As usual all the leaves eventually dropped off after Christmas, however I decided to put it in a south facing window sill to give it a chance and there it's stayed, growing new leaves and now turning red again! HI, I'm a 3 yr resident of Central florida now. Everything grows so differently down here. It's a whole new growing plants, trees, flowers world down here. I here for it to!😅3 Feb ago in Our new neighbors told us to plant them outside & they will grow. I did it because love that my yard is full if flowers in the winter & No snow. To my pleasant surprise, they grew. No lie, 2 of my P plants have grown 8'-10' tall. It's very unusual, unique & beautiful in a whole different way then I've seen them grow in all of my 63 yrs. It's fun. I don't know why 2 grew so tall & 3 grew short & bushy. Then, when the temps drop to below 50° in Feb, the plants start to brown. Cut down in late March. They start to come back to life in April.. *☆★.*** I bought 2 white poinsettias & 1 red in Nov of 23. Now, June 8, 2024, I left these in their pots. my 2 white P went green around Feb.😂 My red one is still blooming red in June. This is another new thing for me. The poinsettia has thinned out some & the red is not as vibrant. Same Neighbors told me yesterday that I should trim it half the size. Keel it outside in shaded area away from afternoon sun. They said it will put out new growth & bloom red again at Thanksgiving & Christmas time. It kinda freaks me out to cut it back so much. You suggested cutting it back to. Is it to late to cut back? Should I give it fresh soil when I cut it back? Im here to find some advice from a professional. I sure hope you will see this and answer my question 😊 What do you think of my tall skinny poinsettia & them all coming back to life after a month or 2 looking dead? I am facilitated & curious about them.

Back again to top up my knowledge, I am managing to keep four alive from the last couple of Christmas's. I know now selection is key, most of the supermarkets throw them outside or near the door. I have found that waiting until the leaves start to droop SLIGHTLY to water works really well as a guide. I live in Scotland so 18degrees is a rarity. But note in this climate these poinsettia's have cost me 1000's to keep alive with extra heating, in the summer it can be like living in the tropics for us up here as i will not open the windows in case there is a draught (hyperbole, but there is some truth in both these comments). Thing is, I am so happy to have kept them alive and much thanks goes to this channel, so thank you from up here in the North East.

Learned me something! I live in Texas and heard they needed special care but I was willing to try to keep a poinsettia alive. I was surprised that it loved the Texas heat and it was one of the best plants I have this past summer. I was wondering why the leaves didn't turn red and now I know. I'll keep this one alive all year and try to get red blooms next year.

Third time is the charm for me. The first 2x I tried to keep my poinsettias, I kept them in a dark place and barely watered them. They are a tropical plant, so they hate that and they died. My current plant is doing great. It lives in my bright sunny sunroom and I water it weekly. I re-potted it and pruned it in April and put rocks at the top of the soil. It is about 74-77F degrees in my house most of the time. My plant is super leafy and happy right now. I may have to put it in my den at night in the winter so the red leaves grow (but not in a closet 24/7 like some people recommend in videos). I can't wait to see how it looks this Christmas.

Mine is a combination of 5 different gift plants from 5 different Christmases, each transplanted into the same pot where it has been for about 10 years - it spends its life behind my house receiving afternoon westerly full sunshine in this Deep South zone 8A summer heat. It has never been in a dark area - there is a street light nearby. I only bring it inside when there is risk of a freeze so I know it tolerates cold down to around 40*F. It receives the same watering/fertilizers (I do have it sitting in a drain pan so the water does not all run out) as do my other garden plants. The only “pruning” done was to remove dead or weak branches so it is 5’3” tall and fully blossomed. Why has one become so beautiful and big without all this meticulous effort! I think sometimes we over-do and complicate things. Transplant into a larger pot, water, fertilizer, outside summer heat is all it took.

Excellent video and text book instructions for the optimum care and successful growing of a poinsettia. What seems to be missing is the mentions of pure dumb luck, which in my case is the only saving grace for my 4 year old plant. Without a clue and relying on the “blind squirrel collecting a nut once in a while” method, I’ve been able to keep the poor soul alive, if only for it to look upon me with desperation and ill will. I am confident of a higher power acting as its guardian as this is the only reasonable explanation as to why it’s still alive.

It keeps red leaves year round, and I do not treat it any different than any other plant. I got very curious after this video, and saw a small one in the store for _3 euros_ so I just had to see how badly it dies. For starters I put it in my backpack and it was -3°C outside when I walked home, secondly there's next to no light this time of the year. For a plant that wants complete darkness at some point, the requirement to have a lot of light in the christmas time is what I'd call picky. But given that it lives in the opposite side of the world, it's fair. It had dry soil and I was just about to water it when I remembered this video and double checked that it wants dryness.

What's even more difficult with these dang plants is trying to make them bloom for Christmas in SUMMER. Plant sellers here in Aus grow poinsettias in such ludacris conditions opposite to the actual seasons to force Winter growth in the height of Summer. Then you buy the plant and bring it home and all the leaves fall off within a week. :)) I managed to keep my poinsettia alive after Christmas and halfway through this year until it randomly died. They're not available in nurseries here yet but I'm gonna try again this year to keep one alive for as long as I can.

I can’t go through all that. The winter darkness priming part is where I draw the line. I just don’t have the time to concentrate on that every single day of that part of the cycle. However I do love the poinsettia plant itself without the red leaves. I want to keep my poinsettias alive because I love the green foliage. Some of mine have already started to wilt and not only lose their their blooms but the Regular leaves too. I am going to take them out of their liners. Maybe they have been kept too damp.

For the first time ever my last year’s poinsettia survived the whole year and is still growing vigorously. No idea why. It’s been in a spot no other houseplant has ever survived and it’s been there for the full 12 months. North facing windowsill next to kitchen sink. Small outdoor air vent above it open all year except when outdoor temperature is at freezing or below. It was repotted in the summer, but hasn’t had any plant food. Just a little water when completely dry. It’s getting red bracks even though it doesn’t have total darkness for 16 hours.

@@SheffieldMadePlantsno idea what. My Mum had the greenest of green fingers, could plant a stick and it would grow. But she was never able to keep a poinsettia alive. I will prune it in a couple of months as it's getting rather too big for the windowsill. It will be interesting to see if it survives that.

:( my mum got gifted one and it pretty much died straight away - not sure who told my mum this but she was told that poinsettias love the cold (i guess it's a common myth from it being associated with christmas) and that's why the petals were curling up. Definitely want to try when they come back in stock - I haven't seen them anywhere in shops after Christmas.

My first time with one of these! I got a white/pink one, but mine got severely cold damaged from Canadian winter air blowing in, as it was kept at the front by the doors. It was also super water logged when I first got it, and needed to be re-potted to soil that wasn't soup; so it dropped leaves and its' flowers pretty quickly, but kept it's bracts and upper leaves. It's currently almost February, and still has most of its leaves and bracts. My question, is do I need to prune it? Currently every single node on my plant has multiple new branches growing out strongly, even the nodes where there's still a leaf. There's over a foot of fresh snow outside, but he's growing like it's spring, without a drop of fertilizer. I'd hate to mess with the plants vibe, since it's set on living.
