Why didnt you pick the Christian on Christian Crusades in Europe ? Far more interesting Far more vicious Far more hidden by the Church and school and education system. Not even the Popes believed it was Gods war. Saint Augustine had set out the parameters of "Jihad" (Holy War) in the 6th century. The Crusades didnt apply as a "just war" or a Holy one. The whole thing saved Europe's system from collapse into anarchy / starvation / overthrow of the feudal system , and made the Church and Aristocracy INCREDIBLY wealthy. Ever wonder why no Popes or Kings went on the First Crusade ? Because every knight , Lord or peasant gave everything they had to their local Lord /King or Bishop to finance their expedition. in 1095 Europe was literally about to have a massive coronary . They needed a way to get rid of as many knights and farmers and hungry mouths as possible. ONE WAY TICKET TO HEAVEN ANYONE ??!!! Yes please ! anything to get out of this disease ridden damp shithole. Alexius expected 300 Norse mercenaries. (at most) He got 198,000 average people armed with pitchforks and sticks led by a monk (Peter) They were all slaughtered - thats 198,000 problems solved. 198,000 farms to the local lords and Church. Then followed the wealthy people who had ALSO given everything to the Kings and Church .........the majority of them died. JOB DONE Europe became stable. Stable enough to borrow Arab knowledge and have a RENAISSANCE . We owe our so called "civilisation" to them. But they have oil . So we keep killing them , not to steal it but to control how its sold. IN THE DOLLAR.

@@kohinarec6580 Not necessarily. Cyrus of the Achaemenid empire, the first Muslim Caliphs etc all spared the cities they conquered. @mgyldz3 жыл бұрын
It was possibly not unique for Europeans, but sent shockwaves throughout the Muslim world, who have not encountered such violence before. It was a common occurrence for a city to change hands, as Jerusalem changed hands just months before the Crusaders arrived. Arab and Turkish historians of the time describe the event with disbelief and disgust. Muslims did not exert the same amount of violence against Crusader states in the two centuries after, and they spared everyone's lives when they took back Jerusalem. The "both sides" argument is usually mistaken with objectivity, but we have to do justice to the truth.

Not bad, but this video leaves out a few key aspects of the capture of Jerusalem during the First Crusade. Historians now believe that the massacre at Jerusalem was exaggerated in the Latin sources to make a good story for people back home. The Muslim sources contemporary to the siege (like Ibn al-Qalanisi) say almost nothing about the capture of Jerusalem in 1099, passing over it as a rather minor event and a typical capture of a city.
@EpichistoryTv7 жыл бұрын
Which is why I was keen to point out that the massacre was not unique for the age. But glad you thought not bad overall.
@RealCrusadesHistory7 жыл бұрын
Yep, but it might've been helpful to clarify that point a bit further. I also think we need to be careful about describing this event with phrases like "orgy of slaughter", since we really aren't sure to what extent the massacre reached. People were killed, yes but we're really not sure who was killed, nor how many people. I also think it's pretty important to point out how indifferent the Muslim chronicles from the actual period are toward this event. Ibn al-Qalanisi is possibly our only contemporary account, and he's extremely laconic about it. Later sources at the time of Saladin inflate the capture of Jerusalem and make it out to be this big horrific event, but that appears to be more a product of story telling and legend building over time.
@EpichistoryTv7 жыл бұрын
I know you know these sources well, so this is genuine query rather than argument, but Christopher Tyerman does use the phrase 'the ensuing massacre shocked Muslim and Jewish opinion'. (p.23, The Crusades, A Very Short Introduction, OUP). He is referring to other later sources?
@RealCrusadesHistory7 жыл бұрын
Tyerman is a great historian, and I would never question his credentials. I have of course read the comment to which you're referring, and all I can say is it is a rather vague and general comment. I would be interested to know exactly what Muslim and Jewish opinion he is talking about. He may very well be referring more to the legend of 1099 that grew over time as leaders like Saladin and Nur ad-Din created new jihad rhetoric to fuel their war against the Crusaders. The fact is that the actual contemporary sources we have for the capture of Jerusalem, as recorded by non-Christians, are rather vague and brief, and don't show much interest or moral outrage, if any at all.

I find it interesting that many are commenting on your “pro Christian bias.” If anything, these videos are biased in the other direction. The first video spends mere seconds breezing over the fact that all of these places were conquered by muslims for hundreds of years prior to the 1st Crusade. (which was a response to the rapid Muslim conquest of the territory) You don’t need to be a historian to do the very simple math. Christianity is older than Islam. Christianity was founded and spread for over 600 years without Islam existing. These videos start by saying these two groups were at war, while showing a map of basically 50/50 percent ownership. How do you think the Muslims achieved that territory in the first place? Offers of milk and cookies?
