Epictetus was a Greek Stoic philosopher. Whats incredible is that He was born a Slave. He lived in Rome until he was banishment, when he then went to Greece for the rest of his life. His teachings were written down and published by his pupil Arrian in his Discourses and Enchiridion.

Currently battling leukemia, these quotes give me power. I’ve read much on stoicism and read meditations by Marcus Aurelius and it has made all the difference throughout my battle between myself and cancer. The only limits we have in this life are the ones we set upon ourselves. If everyday, you do what is necessary and push your possibilities, you will do what you once thought was impossible. Today and everyday I wake up, I do 100 push ups before I leave my bedroom. I returned to school 1.5 years earlier than my doctors thought was possible and have gained 15+ of muscle back despite a tough chemo regiment. Life is a whole lot better if you don’t feel bad for yourself. @Everyday Stoic I finished my battle with leukemia. A year early too. Your KZbin channel and stoicism in general has helped me more than any person, medicine, religioun, etc. thank you for making the content that you do. It saved my life and gave me the best mindset. And thank you to everyone who wished me well here.

Philosophy is like math to me. It can all seem like a ton of different problem, but it really boils down to add or subtract. Or in computer science, a one or zero. In our minds it is “yes” or “no.” We either accept and change productively with tranquility, or resist and suffer painfully. The problem (or remedy) is that there are an infinite amount of ways to word that.

In Stoicism, I have found the home of my spirit. Humility, letting go of fear, not being affected by things outside of my control. It's shown me the ability to focus on what I have to do and stop greiving about what I wish I could do. It's given me a great peace of mind and a certainty about life that I never had. I may never live the life that I once dreamed, but if I die shortly hereafter, and in dying must contemplate my life. I can say that it was a good life, that I have lived honorably. Though I've made many mistakes, I have no regrets. I have only peace, a strong will, and much room to grow. Choose not to be harmed by a thing, and you won't be.

This compilation of Epictetus' quotes serves as a beautiful distillation of Stoic wisdom, emphasizing the power of perception, personal responsibility, and the art of living in accord with one's values. Many of the ideas still resonate today, testifying to the timelessness of Epictetus' teachings. One quote that stands out for me is, "It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters." It cuts to the core of Stoic thought, illustrating the belief that our reactions to external events are more within our control than the events themselves. The Stoic notion of dividing life into 'things we can control' and 'things we cannot control' provides a robust framework for emotional resilience, guiding us to invest our emotional and intellectual energy wisely. Another intriguing quote is, "Men are disturbed not by things, but by the view which they take of them." This quote further elaborates on the idea that it is our interpretations of events, not the events themselves, that disturb us. Stoicism calls us to challenge our preconceived notions and biases, which are often the root cause of our distress. It prompts us to reevaluate how we perceive challenges, setbacks, or even compliments and successes. "We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak." This quote from Epictetus aligns well with the Stoic practice of being present and making intentional choices. Listening more than speaking can be a powerful exercise in humility and mindfulness, giving us the opportunity to absorb wisdom, empathize with others, and also reflect on our internal dialogues. The quote, "Only the educated are free," resonates deeply in today's climate, where misinformation is rampant. Education, as Epictetus suggests, isn't merely academic; it's a deep understanding of one's self and the world, leading to intellectual freedom. In an age overloaded with information but starved of wisdom, his words are a stark reminder of the power and freedom that comes with true education. Epictetus also said, "If you want to improve, be content to be thought foolish and stupid." This shows the Stoic acceptance of social judgment as beyond one's control, but also highlights the necessity for personal risk in the pursuit of virtue and wisdom. Essentially, one cannot grow without stepping out of comfort zones, even if that means facing ridicule or misunderstanding from others. Finally, "No man is free who is not master of himself" serves as the epitome of Stoic self-discipline. Our freedom comes not from our circumstances but from our reactions to them. Thus, self-mastery isn't just about control but about defining the boundaries of one's own freedom. Thank you for curating this inspiring collection of Epictetus' teachings. It's a wonderful starting point for anyone looking to delve into Stoicism, as well as a robust refresher for those already familiar with the philosophy.

The lesson on the relationship between happiness and the management of desires is particularly impactful. Epictetus' insight that 'wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants' encourages us to reassess our priorities and find contentment in simplicity-a valuable lesson in today's materialistic world.
