For anyone curious as to a good blender that doesn't absolutely break the bank - I own a coffee shop and we've used Ninja blenders since opening 4 years ago. They go through probably 50 pounds of ice each per day on average and have been going strong the whole time. Zero issues. I want to say I paid $100 for them. Blenders are definitely one of those things that comparing something super premium to a bottom shelf bargain brand makes it seem a lot more reasonable to spend $600 on a blender. If you compare to something just a bit better I think you'll find that for $100 you can have realistically 90-95% the functionality and quality of the more premium product.

Yep. Most people don’t need a Vitamix since they’re still not making multiple items every single day of the week with a blender. At a certain point it’s just a status symbol, and most things can still be done with a $100-$200 blender. Its like someone that maintains their own yards buying the most expensive tools just because they think “more expensive” = “best”. At a certain point, the ROI is negligible for the regular person who doesn’t use the tools for their profession.

As someone who got the original “consumer” model vitamix near 20 years ago on the cheap, I too would appreciate seeing it compared to something like a Ninja. I love how well my blender works but when something finally needs replacing I’m glad there are plenty of less expensive options these days (there really wasn’t 20 years ago). It still works like new, the container gets a little more dull and hazy as the years pass. The blades have to have dulled decently but it’s still blending like a boss. I certainly didn’t need the thing but it has lasted longer than some of my power tools and gets used more often than half of them.

One amazing thing about the Oster is that the blade base fits a regular mason jar! This means when I make a smoothie each morning I can just shove all the ingredients in a jar, definitely make the right amount of smoothie, and only have to wash one part, before slapping a lid on the jar and tossing it in my bag to bring to work/class! I've been doing this on and off for about 8 years now (starting with my family's Oster blender from the 80s, which was still going strong when I used it in high school, and then with the cheapest Oster I could find when I went off to college), and this video actually made me feel like I don't want to get an upgrade, because I wouldn't have that awesome feature with a blender with a wider base!

I used to sell all of them. The Oster is perfect for the price, and most people's needs. Really. The vitamix is necessary for restaurants and repeated, hourly use. I sold them to a new restaurant, whose specialty was sauces. They came back and ordered a couple more, and we usually handled parts for them. Extra blades and such. That's the only time I would recommend that kind of purchase. Kitchen-Aid and high-end brands were just basic and overpriced. Most people bought those just to match the rest of their appliances. All the pretty colors were the only selling point on those.

I’ve owned many blenders. I currently own a Vitamix and I’m pretty sure my first blender was an Oster. Oster blenders are really good for the price and most people aren’t making nut butter so they will last. You just need to add less ingredients to it, so as not to overload the motor. If you’re looking for something above the Oster but less than the Vitamix, try first a Ninja then a Blendtec. I still use a Ninja at work and I used a Blendtec until it burned out on me. You can buy them refurbished and they’ll last for years

My issue with "the Ninja blenders" are the blades and safe cleaning, as well as it's durability. Blendtec would have been my 2nd go to for high-quality as well, but never heard of one just burning out. Hmmm, guess Vitamix's shut-off mechanism is another good attribute. Two things: 1) He said the square base allows more material to reach the base, but completely missed the biggest design intent of it: to create more turbulence in the mix. Turbulence within the vortex makes mixing so much better. 2) The Vitamix couldn't make mayo more likely because of speed, not because of the larger base. The lowest speed setting on the Vitamix is for sure lower than the lowest speed on the Oster. Instead of doubling the ingredients, which helped a bit, if he used the next higher speed on the Vitamix I bet that would've worked. The problem with the vitamix is it's extremely more expensive, and when something breaks, it's even more expensive to fix. Anyone but a daily blender user would have difficulty justifying such a cost. The tests are also a bit misleading. Loading up a smaller weaker blender with the same volume of almonds, is not comparable. Smaller blenders clearly work better with smaller amounts. In fact, any blender works better and quicker with smaller amounts because there's less material to blend. And time is also another key, because smaller cheaper blenders can produce the same result, given more time. Instead the guy ran the motor at full speed, seemingly deliberately, until it started smoking. These blenders actually do have time limits in the instructions for how long they're allowed to be run. So this isn't just someone honestly testing a blender.....this is someone basically doing a biased ad for vitamix and trying to disguise it as a show. The vitamix is obviously a better blender hands down. But at over 30x the cost, is it better in that context? Not really. Having to blend for 5 minutes instead of 2 minutes to get the same result, also makes that extra cost generally not worth it, especially when you can push a button and let it do its thing, so you're technically not even saving time, because you don't need to be hands on. It's kind of like how a fridge might make something colder a few minutes faster, but if you don't need it that fast and they're both going to reach a good temperature before you would go to drink them anyways, does it really matter if one is quicker than the other? It might matter if you're strapped for time and have to get out the door and want your smoothie to go right away...but just going in and pushing a button a few minutes earlier can lead to the same result. You still get your smoothie on your way out the door.

Based on what was shown in the video I don’t agree that the vitamix is a better emulsifier. Good emulsions should not be thin, and it’s nothing to do with incorporating air. No tool is perfect for all purposes. The vitamix is better for true blending as it’s blades seem designed to be turbulent which helps the blades get access to all the contents, but that doesn’t seem to be optimal for emulsifying. That could be the issue rather than the shape of the vessel. Also the cavitation might be breaking the emulation somehow.

So I think there are a few things that weren't considered in your test. 1. you applied the same amount of ingredients for two designs decades apart. The vita mix was designed for bulk processing. The oster not so much - so reduce the ingredients added - less ice, fewer almonds. Portion size matters here. 2. did you also consider that the base on the oster can be used with standard mouth mason jars - which changes the geometry of the container. This has some advantages over the vitamix. Grinding in a small mason can provide vastly different results from the narrow bottom at a fraction of the cost of the vitamix. (and in case you think this is a hack - osters used to come shipped with a mason jar explicitly for these purposes). Ironically the mason jar/oster connection was also the basis for the magic bullet. SO if you want a magic bullet and have an old oster - guess what - you too can have a bullet blender. :D

I ended up with the Vitamix because I could get parts for it. I used $100 blenders for years but every time I broke any part of the blender I had to throw it out and buy a new one. I have been using the Vitamix for 10 years and have just replaced what few parts I have broken. (The containers don't like it if you forget a spoon in them)

You know what doesn’t need a tamp? A Blendtec, you know, the ones with the jar Vitamix wasn’t allowed to copy. The Blendtec just works without having to play with it to make it work. Even the cheaper Blendtecs don’t need a tamp and work better than the Vitamix.

Indeed, and the Blendtec blade is rounded, and does not 'cut' the food like a Vitamix, so it does not degrade and oxidize the food as much.

I have burned out some blenders and many people really said VitaMix was the best. I watched Americas Test Kitchen and did other research. I borrowed a VitaMix and ended up going with the Breville Hemisphere. It is still working fine, the only thing I don't like is the little finger pull on the lid because when it is on I can't slide it into the area where I store it. Important things to consider are the storage space of the item, replacement parts, and repair options. Cleaning, is the blade base removable and if not how will you clean the bottom of the jar/blades? I also own a Bullet Blender that I even use to chop soap chips. I have a couple different stick blenders that make soups and smoothies. They don't need to do ice since I put frozen peas in my smoothies instead. Really enjoyed your video.

nope. vitamix is waaay better. but as the price is also waaay higher and for most simple fruit-smoothies, the outcome is basically the same, for most people the cheaper (and worse) option will be enough and they won´t see much differences. but if you use your blender daily for a lot off different stuff, you will want the expensive one. it´s the same with knifes. for most people, a 1 to 10 $ knife will be perfect and they won´t need any others in their life. but if you ask a chef, he would for sure prefere some 200$+ knifes. so yes, the cheaper options will be perfectly fine for most of the people, but you can´t say they are better. they are not. another example would be cars. sure...there are cars for one million $ or more. and they are better than a 20k one (faster, more luxurious,...). but for most people, the cheaper one is perfectly fine and they would never have the need for the more expensive one, even if they had the money

with the safety, might have been an indirect sensory type instead of a direct sensory type, where it senses if the thing gets too hot, depending on if another thing the power is going through also gets too hot, but under certain circumstances that wont work, and direct temperature sensing is then more ideal for those situations, where there is a thermometer of sorts that directly messures if its too hot.

Our Vitamix 7500 came with a specific container for doing nuts and it makes fantastic nut butters. The cavitation effect is so strong with the Vitamix that you can actually boil water in the container just by turning it on high and leaving it. It's a crazy blender. The $25 Oster's position hold is quite impressive considering its practically the same design from 50+ years ago, more so after factoring in cost reduction measures over time. Yeah...I already knew how the nut butter test would let go some of the magic smoke. I'm just not sure if the original Osterizer product designers considered blending almonds as a typical household use case around the WWII or Disco era.

Thank you Mr Engineer for conducting these tests. The question I have as a physician is there any difference in gut absorption between the two smoothies. I think the texture of both machines is acceptable but if one offers a nutritional advantage in the quality of the smoothie that would be the real winner. Vegetable fiber is very good for you. From anecdotal evidence I do believe crushing the veggies into micro particles improves gut absorption. Perhaps passing the two smoothies through a strainer may reveal the amount of material that was not completely pulverized.

@@henrimatisse7481 There is anecdotal evidence that indicates that micro pulverized particles of vegetables are absorbed better in the elderly. In theory, however the human gut is supposed to ingest orally chewed vegetables just fine. As we get older our gut does not function as well. I like kefir as it delivers micro biomes to the lower gut. The gut is the second brain of the human body
