COVID-19 and misinformation that surrounds the disease are still spreading. We bring back Syra Madad (@syramadad) and Stephen Morse to debunk 14 new coronavirus myths. They talk about the effectiveness of masks and what it'll take to reopen schools and keep them open. They also debunk the idea that holding your breath when someone sneezes or coughs keeps you safe. Here's why that and many other things you might be hearing about the coronavirus aren't true.
0:36 Myth 1: Wearing a mask doesn't do anything
1:15 Myth 2: Wearing a mask is dangerous because you'll get CO2 poisoning
1:54 Myth 3: All schools should reopen because kids can't get COVID-19
2:46 Myth 4: Asymptomatic people aren't contagious
3:28 Myth 5: Young, healthy people won't die from COVID-19
4:04 Myth 6: You can't get COVID-19 twice
4:41 Myth 7: You won't get the virus if you hold your breath when someone sneezes or coughs
5:16 Myth 8: Consuming disinfectants will kill the virus
5:40 Myth 9: Cleaning your fruits and vegetables with bleach is effective
6:11 Myth 10: Warm weather will stop the coronavirus
6:43 Myth 11: 99% of cases aren't dangerous
7:28 Myth 12: The United States has one of the lowest mortality rates
8:11 Myth 13: 5G technology is spreading COVID-19
8:39 Myth 14: The media is blowing the pandemic out of proportion

@@koppi732 It has been known for DECADES that a N95 mask stops viruses. Why would Coronavirus be an exception? The government made it seem like Coronavirus is the ONLY virus in the world that a N95 mask cannot stop. They made Coronavirus seem like it penetrates through masks and walls, killing 3% of people it infects. But it turns out that masks can stop it, and it only kills less than 0.1% of people, with the majority of them being old and fat

They shorted the stock market when the public hardly knew about Covid, then the markets sank. The Internet Wdym? I’ve been doing online class my entire life and I’m about to head into Junior College. I passed the JLPT N4 test, and passed my SAT, all online (since I’m homeschooled). What I’m trying to say is, I’m living proof that online classes teach you stuff. After 8th grade, our mom stopped doing hands-on homeschooling with us and made us do the curriculum on our own time, which we did.

@@juanitaayala1554 I'm very sorry about that. As somebody who has an autistic brother, I know we all learn at our own pace and in our own ways and that's okay. Maybe if we pour more resources into Online Learning instead of making it seem like Public/In-Person schooling is the only way, online learning will become more attractive to some people and make the learning process easier for those who have a hard time with it. It's also worth mentioning that it puts every student with autoimmune disease at a very high risk of not just getting the virus, but getting their lungs permanently damaged, or even dying. I just worry for all my friends going back, whether on their own account or against their will. If you do choose to go back, I pray you and everyone else stay safe.

My only advice is for these videos, put more of a space or some sort of audio charm to differentiate between the false info and the correct info, because if someone just puts this audio on without seeing the video, or they are blind, or not looking at the screen but still listening--- then it sounds like the myths and facts are all the same sentence and that it's either all true or all false. There's no auditory signal. There needs to be.

@noahpehowic6080
@noahpehowic6080 3 жыл бұрын
My guess is that it has little, if anything to do with the mask and moreso to do with the stress we're all facing. It could also be due to the mask, though, in the sense that you have to work slightly harder to do some strenuous tasks, and if the mask you're wearing has rubber bands rather than earloops, that'll certainly cause a headache, as it did for me when I used a sanding respirator in the beginning of the pandemic (I work at a restaurant, usually 7-8 hour days). Cloth masks really help with that as they go around your ears and not the back and top of your head, especially when working long hours. And the heat probably isn't helping either, on top of the fact that the mask is causing you to use slightly more energy and water, so it could be dehydration as a result of working harder and stress. I'd say use a mask with ear loops and drink plenty of water, and take some time for your mental health to help ease stress. It sucks that we have to do this, but it's necessary to save lives and get back to normal faster. Stay safe!

During 2018-2019 the flu killed 34,000 people out of 44 million infected. Coronavirus has killed 180,000 people out of 5 million infected. Doctors are saying the coronavirus is actually 5-10 times more lethal than the flu. The pandemic has spread this far and wide also within the span of five months, and is not slowing down. We also know much more about the flu than the coronavirus. We are better equipped to deal with the flu because it comes every year. The coronavirus is a completely new thing we don’t know all about and don’t have much control over or systems in place yet to deal with. That’s why it’s always best to err on the side of caution. On top of that, regular flu season is going to start back up again soon. Our hospitals will be overwhelmed with both the coronavirus + flu. This is not a normal thing nor is it a normal time.
@noahpehowic6080
@noahpehowic6080 3 жыл бұрын
The reason that the flu and COVID-19 are being treated vastly different is for a few reasons; one, influenza has been out for years and we have a vaccine to prevent people from getting it, thus lowering the spread and the death rate as best as possible. Secondly, COVID-19 is more transmissible than the flu, so it's easier to get COVID-19 than it is to get the flu. Thirdly, COVID-19 is a new virus and we are still learning about exactly how it's spreads and how it affects people even after they're declared recovered. We know exactly what the flu does and how it spreads, so we know how to stop it and protect ourselves from it, whereas with COVID-19 we're still learning. Lastly, we have treatments for the flu, which helps people recover from it faster and easier and build an immunity to it. With COVID-19 being a new virus, we have little to no treatment whatsoever once someone gets it, making it harder to lessen the severity of the effects, which can be the difference between life and death for some. So although it has similarities to the flu, it's different in many ways and that's what makes it more dangerous.

@dawnflower3792
@dawnflower3792 3 жыл бұрын
As someone who does not have their head stuck in the media and mass's hands, I'd like to add... I decided to not watch the video and look first at what the myths actually were. My thoughts are my own, and I did not come here to be attacked. I only share this so people who may be used to being spoon-fed info from media can get a better look, from the outside. So, I put my thoughts into this. Sorry it's a long reply: - Myth 1: If you're healthy, surrounded by healthy people (not asymptomatic), then no. The mask won't do anything... Environments you go out in public into, like stores, are being so heavily cleaned, that's not even much of a concern, depending where you live. The mask is to stop / slow the spread of the illness from SICK people. The mask will help a healthy person to some degree if they are near / around sick people, since the disease is spread through air droplets. It's not a cure-all even then, but it will help. - Myth 2: Wearing a mask over your mouth and nose for long periods of time at all is likely not going to be fun... especially for those with glasses or breathing problems. However... CO2 poisoning? seems more like crappy design of the mask than anything... (To be clear, I don't support the 'masks for everyone! always, when in public!' argument. However, it makes people feel safer, I guess, and the placebo effect is strong. I'm glad some states and places are rolling back the requirement to wear them, and instead letting people choose, as it should be.) - Myth 3: Maybe not... Maybe a minute few, if properly regulated. Use the same common sense as you would for flu outbreaks; if the outbreak is big / bad enough, most schools will close. (Also, 'kids can't get covid'?? No...?) - Myth 4: Asymptomatic people are still contagious; that's how it works with all infectious diseases, I'm pretty sure. - Myth 5: If you are young and healthy, no. That alone, with covid, will not kill you. However, flu-like illnesses will weaken your immune system, and other things may get through the cracks. I think the worst part is how the masses are treating covid and those infected. That is to say, being isolated like the beginning of a zombie apocalypse isn't good for anyone's mental health. The stressors and pressures are going to be horrible due to how you'll be treated, and THAT will absolutely tear you down physically and mentally. Covid, on it's own, in young healthy people, will not kill you. It's just like the flu, if maybe a little more advanced. It would be the stress others place on you that will weaken you further. - Myth 6: I'm not sure about this... Maybe, maybe not. However, your body is smart enough to deal with illnesses that it's dealt with before, and in a much cleaner and more timely manner than the first time. That's just common sense / knowledge about sicknesses like the flu. Memory B cells! - Myth 7: Um... no. Not how this works. The droplets they put out will stick to you, your face and clothing, and hang in the air. The only way this would work is... complete lack of oxygen. Can't get sick if you're dead. - Myth 8: ...and you. It'll kill the virus! and you. Again, can't be sick if you're dead, I guess. - Myth 9: No. Similar to above... you're likely only going to poison yourself. Stop that. - Myth 10: That doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Unless, if by 'warm weather' you mean hurling yourself into the sun?? Can't be sick if you're- - Myth 11: Depending where you live, the '99%' of cases will differ. Some populations may contain mostly young, healthy people (see response #5), while some may have higher numbers of, say, older people who are already immune-compromised. For many, this holds true, at least to some extent. - Myth 12: If you're listening to the CDC and mass media alone, the mortality rates are going to be EXPONENTIALLY higher than what they really are. Does no one remember when someone exposed their numbers as so horribly skewed, that over 90% of the claimed deaths were almost certainly unrelated to covid? - Myth 13: Wh... what? - Myth 14: Oh ho ho, boy... Y'all aren't gonna like this. (See response #12) If you're believing everything you hear on the news, from the CDC, and the government, you're almost absolutely being lied to. The media LOVES to stir up trouble, make it seem so much worse. They feed on the fear; they want you to click their articles, listen to what they're saying. They want your attention, and they'll straight-up lie to get it. It's nothing new. Sad, but that's how they do it. They manipulate people to get their viewers. That's how news / media works. All I have to say, is DON'T believe everything the media / CDC / governments are telling you, ESPECIALLY if you live in the U.S.. They are only abusing the chaos they create to herd everyone willing into a situation where all the power is in one place: at the top. Be aware of this, and you start to regain your power. This is a dangerous time, folks...

And here we are 11 months after your response. You should have listened to this before you did your own research. Most of what you are saying is right, but some of what you are saying such as healthy people don’t need to wear masks or that healthy young people don’t die from COVID-19 is wrong. But that was how you felt 11 months ago, hopefully you or people you know didn’t get COVID-19.

Yes, they were wrong, but as you stated, less was known about the virus. It wasn't their fault that they are flip-flopping as they become more knowledge about the virus. So I don't think it's their fault, or that it was their intention to spread misinformation, I think they just had a lack of knowledge and understanding about it and that's just how it is, it's not anybody's fault. Anyways, stay safe, have a good day :)

a surgical mask is meant to help block large-particle droplets, splashes, sprays, or splatter that may contain germs (viruses and bacteria), keeping it from reaching your mouth and nose. Surgical masks may also help reduce exposure of your saliva and respiratory secretions to others, protecting others incase you are infected
