When my sister had a baby, she was also taking care of my cat. My cat can be feisty sometimes, and spontaneously scratch or give a little bite if she has a mood. So my sister was very worried about the baby. Turns out, my cat recognized the baby as special, and would let the baby literally tear out her fur without even lifting a paw. One time my sister was doing laundry, when my cat started circling her feet and meowing loudly. Turns out the baby had started crying and my sister couldn’t hear it, so my cat went and got her attention. Now there’s a second baby, and she’s just as gentle with them both. :)

I think it’s so sad when people just get rid of their animals when kids come along. Unless there is a real danger ie dog actually attempts or shows aggression to child. Owning an animal is a responsibility you take on and shouldn’t just abandon when a new thing comes along. Sure it’s not convenient to change things or do something extra but far to many people take getting rid of their pet too lightly.

When my son was born, my long-haired black cat was obsessed with him. A few people tried to tell me the cat was jealous, but I'll never believe it. He wanted to be near him constantly, like my son was HIS kitten. We even ended up referring to our baby as "the kitten" because it was so funny. He just adored my son as they grew up together.

I have a 6 month old girl and adopted a rescue cat a month ago - same thing, he has always been curious about our baby girl and when we let him near, he literally just lies down beside her in bed. When she reaches out for him, he makes sure his head or paw is always within reach, and is always super relaxed around her.

The biggest one: “Cats are moody and unpredictable”. Some cats can be moody, yes, but it is often very easy to understand their body language, and be able to tell if they’re getting annoyed with you. Understanding boundaries and body language is one of the biggest ways to build a positive bond with a cat (saying this as someone with 2 silly, crazy cats). They’ll be more inclined to be affectionate with you if you understand what they’re telling you.

Yeah they were sorta wrong there, I think they were taking from larger cats. Some large cats will sleep for up to 23hrs a day, but yeah, i think that was a speaking mistake. Cats are smart animals and I’m pretty sure a cat can distinguish on what a cat and a human is. Which comes to the point of cats not seeing us as parents but as more of a caretakers. They had seen their siblings and mother before because when kittens are born (not sure how long) they stay with their mother for a certain period and siblings for variety of reasons and than get adopted unless they are street cats but with your cat, maybe your cat seems to like you very much because of whatever you did or do with him. When I was in nursing school a few years ago, my program recommended getting rid of the cat and I was shocked, being a cat owner myself. There is alot of misunderstanding on that issue. I would advise regarding the litter box and having someone else clean it -- switch to pine litter. The cat will adjust but the advantages of pine litter are -- a whole lot less tracking and dust. The difference is amazing and it's probably good to do for anyone who also has asthma or lung issues plus bonus -- many of the commercial litters contain chemicals and perfumes and the FDA really doesn't regular pet products made overseas, where alot of this stuff is made. Look for pine litter that is chemical/perfume free and just clean their box twice a day or more depending on how many cats one has.

Purring releases endorphins! So cats might purr when they’re stressed or in pain to calm themselves! Cats on average sleep 11-17 hours a day (23 is an exaggeration) Babies can be scary, they can tug on tails, they scream, they have no boundaries. It’s important with both cats and dogs to teach your kids how to interact with them. I knew about the milk thing, even the special cat milk part, because I had an older cat and as he got older (he was 18 years old) he wouldn't eat as much as he needed to in order to stay healthy. So we switched him over to wet food that we then used a blender to mix (blend) together with the cat milk to make his food go down easier/quicker. This meant that he'd have more nutrients in a smaller amount of food, and he was also more likely to eat more food because it was easier for him to eat. It was kinda a gross consistency and got bad (dried up, etc.) really quickly though, so we did this a few times a day and then left his dry food in his bowl for him to eat in between meals - which he rarely did but it was even better if he was able to do both. Like I said, he was a really old cat and he had feline ocular herpes so he was also fully blind in one eye and partially blind in another. He had a very long life, but by the end it was clearly his time to go. But that cat milk was really helpful in those last few months to keep our cat as healthy and happy as possible. And if you were wondering we did get a smaller blender that we used specifically for his food, mainly because he didn't eat much and our big blender wouldn't have worked very well for getting that small amount of food blended properly. We usually fed it to him in a syringe-type thing (the kind vets use to give animals medicine), and he kinda drank it like a hamster drinks from its water bottle thing. In other words, we didn't force it down his throat, but he'd get himself dirty if we had him lick it from a bowl because he was mostly blind and very not graceful. He never was graceful, btw. That was a his personality thing, not anything related to his health. We loved him and miss him so much, but yeah that cat milk was a god send.

my cat was basically my father when i was born haha, he imprinted on me from the day i was born, when i was brought home he saw me and instantly loved me. whenever anyone, even my mom, got near me he’d nip at the feet to say “put her down” but never enough that i’d be hurt, and he’d always let my hold him, even in times if basically be hurting him, he was just calm and letting me, he was always by my side, i remember when i was sick, my cat would sit right next to me and stay there, he wouldn’t even get up to eat, not until i was well enough to get up. he saved my life when a rabid fox tried to attack me, he fought him off, but in the end was infected, he passed away due to rabies, but as a hero. i’m his last moments, he knew how much i loved him and how much i knew he loved me, that cat was my best friend and i will never forget him. he’s always in my hear, my Kitty Kitty :)

@@Timeward76 it really depends on the tine of day and the weather. Cats are more active at dusk and dawn, so they will sleep on average 15 hours during the day. Some cats will take a catnap, which is usually they go into a light sleep so they can spring up at a moments notice to escape from predators. They are also hardwired to conserve energy, which is why some active cats will sleep to 15-20 hours. However, if your cat is doing nothing BUT sleeping that is not very healthy.

@@nitrogenbubbles4555 Hormones don't have odor. They can affect your body odor, but not in a way that is unique to biological males/females on an everyday basis. (You may release some more unique scents while aroused, for example, but I'd expect most people will not normally be aroused when hanging out with cats). If men and women smell uniquely seperate to your cat, that's far more likely due to differences in perfumed products men and women typically purchase. These products are designed to have lasting odor and neutralize natural body odors that your hormones could affect. Individual people do have unique smells though, so if you aren't regularly perfumed (and deodorant obviously counts here) than your cat is likely observant enough to recognize you by your smell alone. But that's a "you" smell, not a "male/female" smell.

Yes and no. Cats do show kind of the same bevahior that human toddlers do when it comes to attachment. It can be assumed that cats and small children exhibit the same attachment styles. But the truth is that toddlers (during their first years of life) also basically are only attached to their caregivers because they get food, safety and comfort from them. So it could be argued that cats do kind of see us as parents, but more like in the eyes of a toddler for whom affection is mostely an appreciation of the care that is given to him or her.

Cats (at least some of them) do get attached to their humans and genuinely miss them. As it happened I had to be away throughout a week days for 3 weeks straight. Our 5 months old Russian blue cross stayed with my wife and he was absolutely restless, to the point at which my wife was barely getting an hour of sleep. For the record - they both get along very well and have their own relationship, however our kitten stopped acting up and resumes his usual shenanigans only after I come back. He also started eating (regularly) again and sleeping. The confidence that these two (especially the younger one) talk with amazes me, especially when clearly there's a lot of true-life experience contradicting their theories.

I've fed some people's cats that I only knew the cat was there because the food would keep disappearing between feedings and I've fed some cats that were all up in my face while I was filling their bowls. It depends on the personality, but cats can get used to new caregivers over time.

Our dog Freckles was 10 when we brought our cat Snowball(then only a few months old) home from the pet store. While it took a few days for them to get used to each other since Freckles got scratched by a cat when he was younger they quickly took to each other. They'd often run around the house and Snowball even respected Freckles as he'd stop doing something he wasn't supposed to when Freckles got after him about it like when he would bat around the ornaments on the Christmas Tree. When Freckles got really old(we finally had to put him down at 17)and he wasn't able to move much Snowball would lay down beside him and would try to get him to play. Sometime after Freckles passed we had a picture of him sitting on a bottom shelf and Snowball stared at it for the longest time. So yes, cats and dogs can get along and even love each other. RIP Freckles, you were the best dog I've ever had.

In theory cats can survive on vegan cat food with vitamin supplements but this may be quite unpleasant and not very healthy for cats. We are omnivores, but they are (obligate) carnivores - in the wild they die unless they eat meat (which means killing wildlife), people who want to have a cat need to understand that.

To be fair, dry cat food is not exactly meat (but it may contain non-vegan products). Good-quality cat food does contain everything cats require - they are generally better off eating good-quality dry food than dubious-quality meat even if they prefer the latter. Furthermore, feral cats eat not just meat but sometimes other parts of their prey, so feeding them just beef may not be enough (please ask your vet). Most important part - unlike almost any other animal/pet cats absolutely have to consume taurine regularly - this is a leading problem with vegans AFAIK. Without that cats become sick, blind and then die. Natural meat and cat food contains that, but not other food - e.g. plants, dog food, "vegan meat substitutes", some processed products.

"Cats land on their feet" My cat, slowly falling off the couch for the millionth time looking at me as he falls because he's too lazy to move his leg and stop himself: I'm about to fall on my face and I couldn't give less of a shit. Me *rolling my eyes*: And this is exactly why there's pillows underneath this couch. P.S. Our couch was only a few inches off the ground, and he usually actually fell on his side or his feet (although that was merely because he always laid with his feet towards the edge of the couch, not any sort of gracefulness on his part) - I just thought "face" sounded funnier. If we (my mom and I) were around we'd usually catch him, but he did this when we weren't home too so we couldn't always stop him. Hence putting pillows underneath the armrests of the couch because usually that's where he'd fall from, and it was the highest part of the couch. The pillows weren't necessary, it was a very short fall and it was a carpeted floor, but we wanted to do as much as we could to make certain he was always completely safe. Including basically baby-proofing (or as we called it "lazy-proofing") our house. Our cat was super lazy and ungraceful, and sometimes we had to account for that to keep him safe. 😊 He passed away when he was 18 years old after a very long and happy life. He was a very happy cat, he was just super lazy and a bit of a dummy.

My cat was terrible. I actually think he had retained some lactose tolerance from being a kitten and damn well knew it. You couldn't leave any bowls of icecream or milk from your cereal out because he would sneak up and help himself. And you'd be like "no stop it. You shouldn't have cows milk man" and he'd be like " I don't care. It's good man. I can take it" and sneak back up on the table as soon as you looked away for another couple licks. Then again this cat would help himself to your kebab meat, and almost climb up your leg for some raw chicken scraps. He had a pretty iron stomach for virtually all of his life. Not a pedigree softie that's for sure. I would say the sneaky meat treats he'd wrangle of us is what probably helped him live to 19 years.

They are very territorial, and when you develop a bond with your cat, you become a part of that territory because they want everyone in the world to know that you are _theirs_ - hence why they bump their head on you to release scent glands on your clothes, on things you own, and on items of furniture as a way of telling other animals "back off, this human is mine and if you hurt them, I'll hurt you!" If they didn't trust you, they definitely _would not_ allow you to pet them or expose their bellies to you, since both of those positions would leave them vulnerable to other predators in the wild. They will get separation anxiety when you are gone for prolonged periods of time and are just as excited to see their owners as dogs; every time I walk back into my front door, my cat is already waiting for me and will run down the steps just to greet me with her tail high in the air. The only difference between cats and dogs is that cats like to be petted on their own terms because they are naturally independent in the wild, whereas dogs will let you pet them almost anytime you want because they consider you to be their pack leader.

I used to have doubts about cats attachment to their owners until my grandma had to give us custody of her cat for going to a retirement home. After a while she came to visit and her cat instantly recognized her and showed her love she wouldn't have given to anyone else.

I really don't understand where the idea that cats don't love their owners came from They don't show affection the same way a dog would, but that doesn't mean they don't use other ways

Dude you can't just say this without any sources to back it up. They at least have a qualification in the relevant field while what you seem to be saying is purely speculatory and anecdotal. Just find some research papers and link them or even an article or two that have their sources.

@@AS-qi9mb I read through every one of those articles, I get your point, they definitely seem to have undermined the formation of a bond with humans. However, on second watch they never claimed what they were saying to be fact. "I think that they just see you as a source of food and cleanliness and a safe place to live". It was purely speculation, in the context of debunking the claim presented, in the broadest way possible. Although they don't do their best job at presenting the facts in that case. Their only mistake was if their handling of words confused people into thinking their speculation was scientific facts.

A stray I adopted was very territorial of not only me and my mother, but our house as well. He would get super upset when he saw other cats walking by the house and would always try and chase other cats out. He was the sweetest little cat iv ever owned.

One thing they didn't say, is why cats hate water. Reason is simple: cats use their whole body as sensors. That's how they can crawl in such small spaces. Putting water on a cat, his fur stick to his skin just like if he was in a tight space, it ruin part of their spacial awarness. That's why you can find videos of cats walkign strangely if you just put a bit of adhesive band on them.

As a dog trainer and foster home to many cats and dogs throughout the years, I can honestly say 2 dogs are harder to socialize or 2 cats, but it's much easier to socialize a cat with a dog. I've never had an issue with this. In fact, the last pup we fostered - I saw him in the streets once eating a cat. We took him in and he never even once made a threatening movement towards any of our 3 cats. You see, animals will see the apartment/house as a separate "dimension" - one with its own rules. Rules that you make. If you're good at maintaining the harmony, the animals will largely get along. If you can't maintain order, work with a behaviorist and you'll succeed!

All cats have different personalities and anyone who thinks that all cats are mean either haven't been around cats enough or give off threatening behaviour towards the cat. My neighbour has had 4 cats in the time I've known her. O'Malley was your typical confident ginger tomcat, Patra was super timid, Molly was unbelievably affectionate and Suzzie was cautious but friendly to familiar people. They all lived to good ages.

My black cat had a lot of good luck in his life. He had gotten out of the house a few times, but we always ended up finding him, even the time our neighbor stole him, we happened to see him in the window while walking the dog. He also had pretty bad allergies but we were always able to make him feel better. He made it to 16 or 17 and I'm really glad that I got to spend that time with him. He wasnt the most cuddly cat, but I love him very much
