Epidendrum Orchids : Care & Culture

I have native Australian crucifix orchids. I have dragged them all around Australia. The natives you can toss in a garden I’f you need and they will happily grow. When they are in a big messy clump outside I think they like it much more. I only have natives. I think they are hardier, coping with weather extremes better. I have had to quickly pot mine in any soil I could get and they where still happy. Great video. Keep it us. Thanks Jo Western Australia.

That yellow one you have on your deck, ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ . They will grow in literally anything, their roots are so adaptable, but I find they do tend to grow and look nicer in a more water retentive medium in a hot climate. And despite the blooms being small and non-fragrant, they bloom for so long it more than makes up for it.

Michael McCarthy yes that yellow one is my fave too.. The flowers are gorgeous but also it always just forms this perfect shape every time. Yes these guys are definitely water lovers!!

I have a couple of epis hwever they never seem to bloom. I have placed them in leca. They are not dying however not blooming either.

There are many identified species of Epidendrum, and while they are part of the LaeLiinae, many Epidendrum do not interbreed with other Laeliinae, or if they do then the offspring are sterile or have a hard time making further generations. One reason for that is many Epidendrum species have wildly different counts of chromosomes. Anyway, also remember that the prefix "Epi-" was (years ago) used for intergenerics that used species today classified as Encyclia, Euchile, Prosthechea, etc. Appreciated video on a group of hybrids that today does not get much attention. Your plants look good.

We can grow them here in Tampa Florida in ground & in full sun, E. radicans is near weed like it's so prolific.

Hi I just found some of the same orchids in a garden in public grounds...they were just growing wild and free from the ground in mostly subtropical shade. I have just started my orchie enthisiasm and have now collected 5 different species. I have so much to learn and am wondering if.you can share where u get your premix media - charcoal, bark, spag moss, perlite, etc....

Very good vídeo, I really enjoyed it. Your Epidendrum are very beautifulI, adding some colour is good. I do not have any, I just bought an Epicattlyea, unfortunately not the Renee Márquez (in my wish list too). Epidendrum are larger than I want if I have to bring them inside in the cooler season. Wonder if I could grow them outside... How cold does it get in winter in your yard ? Last year I found a smaller variety but had no luck with it, got very strange idententations on the leaves and went to a better place😁

Fernanda Nascimento orchids & succulents my winter gets down to 5C .. rarely any lower. That is 41 F. I do think out in the garden that is probably it's its lower limit without protection from rain, fog, dew etc. But I'm always surprised how much you can push done of these orchids!

Good to see you 😊 I don’t grow these simply because of the size ... have you considered actually planting them in your garden, not in the pot as you have the one outside, but like the nursery you mentioned? Are they fragrant?

Nina Bosse I've never had much luck with actual gardening and planting stuff in the yard! We recently ripped out a dead magnolia tree though so I should trial it there... Maybe the Keiki machine as I'm not too attached to it! No sadly no fragrance in any that I've come across.

Hi I have 3 of these the orange ones, I had them in full sun but the leaves have now started to go yellow and really dried up. I’ve mounted them now on trees, do you think they will end up coming back good, i now have them in a more dappled in area.
