We get pretty full-on 'Nerdsville' this week as the Epiphone '59 meets our Gibson R8 to compare hardware, software, underwear, and sounds. For many this is ultimate in guitar pornography but for others it's ok as there's also some relaxed chat and a fair bit of playing.
But if you don't like some the talking or the playing bits in this video we've made it easy for you to skip along to the next chapter in case something more interesting is happening...

This has got to be the most honest review I have ever had the pleasure of watching. I've owned MANY epiphones, gibsons, grecos, and burnys over the years and to be honest burny is my favorite. Epis were always hit or miss but I think I may pick this one up based on your in depth comparison. Thank you for taking the time to do this. I'm definitely subscribing.

Forget about the scarf joined headstock.... what about the size of the Epiphone headstock. It's wide and clunky. Les Paul himself would disagree with the fact it lacks any grace. It's just dumb looking
@williamdesmarais4931
@williamdesmarais4931 Жыл бұрын
@@riadmiah3342 Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. From my experience no headstock shape has ever given me better tone, and while I'm playing I can't see the bugger anyway. Not sure what you mean by big and clunky since epi headstocks have always been narrower than Gibson headstocks (unless my eyes deceive me). I do believe it is a bit pretentious to assume to know what another man would or would not approve of. Since Les Paul started with Epiphone and played both Gibson and Epiphone thru his long career, I think it's rather safe to say that he didn't hate them.

I’ve never understood why people get weird about scarf joints they’re actually stronger than a continuous piece of wood. You get a better grain angle in the weakest part of the guitar
@theguitaristas

Hey Bryan, yes I’ve always heard that... they never break at the scarf joint. Maybe it’s the tone thing? who knows what s best! 🤷‍♂️🎸

I know this is controversial, but wood plays a negligible part in tone. It's the pickups and electronics that play a major role in a guitar's tone, along with the rest of the sound chain.

This is so interesting. I haven't picked up my Epi Les Paul for ages till I watched part 1 last week. I love the anorakishness, (?) of this. Thanks for inspiring someone who's forgotten the joy of just playing.

Thanks Will that’s good to hear! I’m flattered if you can hear any of those guys in my playing! ☺️ I’ve certainly listened to all that stuff over the years but also I think more recently Frank Zappa, Mick Ronson, and Steve Hunter / Dick Wagner (listen to Sweet Jane from Rock n Roll Animal Lou Reed) have helped me begin to improve I hope? Also making these films has inspired me to try and play better and I am actually enjoying improvising again... well at least some days when it’s all working out! 😂 Glad you got that vibe again too! 👍😎🎸

Very well done. I just purchased the ‘59 Epi last week in aged dark cherry. I bought in Canada and was about 1300 dollars total. I am primarily a Strat man however love LPs and SGs as well. I was quite surprised at the quality and sound of this guitar. I had to tweak the set up and I use Elixir Optiweb 10-46s. Great playing and great honest evaluation. I have several Les Pauls. 1970, 2008, 2011, 2012. Great guitars. Run them through a Blues Deluxe. Also have a 99 Epi Sheraton that I can't rave enough about. 10 years ago I bought what I thought was an Epi but turned out to be a "Chibson" which I think for a while were back door Epi's. Gibson bought Epiphone in the 50's to get the rights to hollowbodies. Can't afford an ES 335 but the Sheraton comes close. All by way of saying that Epi's are really great guitars.

No worries about the tailpiece studs, sir. There are metal bushings in that R8 top. They don't have a flange on top--they're more recessed into the top, so they're not as obvious as the ones on the Epi '59. If you look close, you'll see that there's finish on the top of the bushings. That's how my '82 30th Anniversary Gold Top is, and it's modeled after a '57. With no metal threaded bushings, there would be no way to ground the tailpiece. Another fine vid, btw.

Really nice concept the way you did the back to back comparisons to the backing track. And you went from A to B on each toggle switch setting too. Very smart move. All too often I see people do comparison videos and it never occurs to them to play the exact same piece on both guitars to truly provide a back to back comparison for the listener. They tend to do all sorts of non cohesive blues licks that change from guitar to guitar. THIS is the way to do it. Interestingly, to my ear, the middle switch setting is the one I heard a bit of difference.

Hey Ivan, thanks for the support and kind words! Yes I tried to do something that was consistent... I think the idea worked but I still always (afterwards) wish I'd chosen maybe different settings or pieces. @@theguitaristas if your copyright restrictions allow it... consider A+B testing in the future doing the opening lead to Since I've Been Loving You. There are backing tracks on the net you could do that to. Just the first 20 seconds on each guitar in each toggle setting. I make that recommendation because the opening 20 seconds of SIBLY features Jimmy playing on all three toggle settings. One things's for sure, that Epiphone 59 Standard after you fitted the after market pickups is sensational.

@@ivanjulian2532 Ok thanks Ivan, yes I could create my own tracks but just prefer using simple loops as I think it's something that everyone can do at home, and perhaps shows off how the guitar sounds more effectively?... and to be honest it's a lot less hassle! Plus, any recording of someone elses track is likely to breach the owners copyright... I have had films de-monetised (90% of the advertising revenues are sent to copyright claimant) for using my own recording of 40 seconds of their track in a 40 minute film. Thank you for your video I find it very helpful. Although I've already decided I'm going to purchase the 59 Epiphone it's nice to see well I'm blind so it's nice to hear your take on this whole thing since you own a R8 and the Epiphone side by side it's interesting. I was under the assumption assumption that burst fuckers were made to emulate the pafs. I think the two and three's were a bit hotter or maybe more mid-range either than the original pafs which I guess are just regular burst buggers I don't know how they how they name them trade-wise but that was what I was under the sort of. But looking forward to the number three which I just have to find because it's already been done lol. Thank you again having trouble finding your first video the demo of the 59 epiphone. My problem is is that when I go into description where usually links are my screen readers don't allow me to differentiate between any links so the links become kind of superfluous or useless to me I wish it was different cuz I miss out on a lot of stuff like that. As far as links go. Again thank you I think I said that enough huh LOL sincerely yours, but the blind bedroom guitarist

Nice episode! I suppose the real deal is in the feel. Does one resonate more when certain chords or notes are struck? (especially without an amp behind it?) I would be interested in seeing you do a double blind test. Of course, you'd need someone to assist, but that could help eliminate any bias towards the more expensive outlay of funds. Just using your fingers or ears may reveal another side of the equation. Thanks for sharing our journey with us!! 🍻

I enjoyed this and it further supports what I have always believed, that there is no need to spend £1000's on a Gibson if you want the Les Paul sound. Guitar collecting and playing for most of us is nothing but a luxury so if an Epiphone gets as close as this and you only have to spend £700 then you are on to a winner. The majority of the extra cost you will spend on a Gibson is for the made in the USA badge, Gibson history and heritage, Gibson employee wages and the additional US environmental and legal legislation that has a big impact on production cost. Of course none of the above effects the sound and playability of a guitar but does massively effect the price of a guitar.

There are good Epiphones out there, especially nowadays. But trust me when I say that there’s something about the fit, finish, and playability of a Gibson that isn’t the same as Epiphone in general. But with that being said, Epiphone has stand out models like this one that are great guitars. Also, with that being said, somebody told me once that if you want a Gibson Les Paul, no matter what Epiphone you get you’re always going to be comparing it to a Gibson guitar, and you’ll never have exactly what you want no matter how good the Epiphone might be because of the fact that it says “Epiphone” and has a different headstock. Basically, get what makes you happy and play the shit out of it.

Great part 2, I'm surprised at how small the gap is sound wise between the two. It's great that you can get in the ball park for a lot less. I can't wait to hear the result of the pickup swap your planning for part 3. I doubt I'll be able to pick the 59 up, by the time I can afford one i reckon they will have been snapped up. I may opt for the new epiphone slash signature version which is around the same price but with Alnico 2 pickups in ,given that I already have the 50s goldtop it'd give me two slightly different animals.

Thank you for this in-depth comparison. Once the YT compression (and I guess Pro-Tools will have had its impact too) have been taken int account I can honestly say that there was very little discernable difference in tone to my ears (which I hope does not indicate anything wrong with my hearing!) I am guessing that for most of us the way a guitar feels in the hand, and the way we respond to all the myriad of slight differences between guitars is really important. I know that I have guitars no one else would consider playing, but which I love because they feel good to me, and of course my hands are entirely different from anyone else's, so my needs are therefore different. That said, in complete honesty is there anyone watching this who would not be somewhat swayed by the price-tag. Think of the legacy value for our descendants! As a player though, much as I really did like your Gibson 58, I would probably go for the Epiphone, and make a few changes to it.
@theguitaristas
@theguitaristas 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Ian, I guess it’s always eventually going to be about which guitar makes us feel good and want to play it... chasing these small differences is never going to matter much in the real world but it’s fun to experiment! For some people holding and owning a £5k or whatever guitar is what it’s all about, but others would be far happier only spending £500 and getting much the same feeling and sound from it. Personally I love both ends of the spectrum! Whatever you play enjoy it and don’t care what anyone else thinks eh!? 👍😎🎸

Complimenti e grazie. Ciao dall'italia. 🇮🇹 🎸
