I bought this 2010 Epiphone Dot ES-335 about 6 months ago from a cool music store in Toronto - Cask Music on Queen street. It needs a fret job and the nut will be replaced with a new Tusq nut. I will also replace the original Grover tuners with locking Grover tuners and finally, give the guitar a good cleaning and set up. Looks great in vintage sunburst and sounds great too! Thanks for watching - please Like & Subscribe for more videos.

Autosol is your best friend, when it comes to finalizing the fret polish! I like to use a dremel, with a fine polishing pad, and that really produces a high-gloss shine.

You straightened the neck for the fret leveling, and then you didn't have to adjust the neck relief once you had the strings on. You have perfect neck there. It's straight with no string tension and bowed just enough with tension. I wonder how common that is, and I wonder how much the design of the truss rod has to do with it. I assume that would be a goal of designing a truss rod, but every piece of wood is different. Interesting. Never thought about it before.

@@lour3548 ideally, without string tension and no tension on the russ rod, your neck should straight. Not many guitars are like that... hence the need for a truss rod.

Locking tuners are great if you want that guitar to be in one tuning. Nice video thanks.

Agreed. I actually prefer split post tuners to ocking ones. They are easy to string up, never loosen and you can use alternate tunings.

Why did you after leveling with the beam use the radius block afterwards? Never seen anybody do this. Why not use the radius block for the entire leveling job?
@ManotickGuitarTech
@ManotickGuitarTech 5 ай бұрын
I find the leveling beam does most of the work and then I can "fine tune" it with the radius block.

Great video. Wish I had some of the tools you have. My dot's frets are ruined. Polished them up but still have indents in them etc.

Thanks, Craig. If the frets get left for too long, the only thing to do is to have them replaced, unfortunately. Send me some pics of your 335 and the fret issue.

Thanks for posting. Great viewing. Out of interest, what did you learn from the 'nut drop'!?
@ManotickGuitarTech
@ManotickGuitarTech 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Rod. They make different sounds - the Graphtec nut is definitely more "musical" sounding than the plastic nut when dropped. Bone nuts as well... they are better than plastic.

@@ManotickGuitarTech Thanks for the reply and heads-up. Interesting that Tusq is more 'musical'. Had always avoided synthetic nuts, thinking that bone or ivory were superior - incorrect!

Thanks, Mike! Glad you enjoyed... As for the 339, they most likely are the same Grovers but I always double check before ordering (too many small changes in manufacturing over the years).

@@ManotickGuitarTech Hey, enjoyed your video. You don’t happen to know offhand what size conversion bushings I’d need for a 1998 Epiphone Dot, do you? I think the peg hole is a little bigger than the usual?

Do you know if you can replace these tuners with the Grover Vintage tuners? These have one screw, the Grover vintage have 2 screws, I would hope that the one hole lines up, but might have to add two screws?
@ManotickGuitarTech
@ManotickGuitarTech 3 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure- check their website for the detailed specs and you will be able to tell. Sounds like you will have to drill some additional holes.

When fret leveling, do you worry about filings in the pickups?
@ManotickGuitarTech
@ManotickGuitarTech 4 жыл бұрын
You will notice that I taped off the pickups because you can get the metal filings sticking to them and they can be a bit of a pain to clean off without scratching anything.

Guitar specs can be different, even from the same manufacturer and model, so I would measure the width of the bridge posts and make sure they match the dimensions of the new bridge you want to buy.
