If I may ask, I would think that under string tension, there would be a bit more curve to the neck, and even more height over the frets. What aren't I getting?
@garymanis63057 жыл бұрын
I think what is happening is that when the neck is under string tension, the neck away from the guitar body bows as expected, but the fret board extension is on the other side of the neck joint and actually gets slightly pushed upward by the guitar body as the neck and neck joint area of the body are pulled toward the bridge.

Hey - I watched mostly because in beginning you mentioned *dried-out* fingerboard. I could have missed it, but what can I do about my own guitar's _very_ dry fingerboard? It's rosewood, new old-stock, solid mahog. and solid spruce, so very nice sound, but fingerboard so dry I can't do finger slides! Playing up the neck's about impossible, so "dry" feeling. I have some stewmac lemon oil - but something tells me it take more than that. Any advice much appreciated. : )

Hey Dave, I've been looking around for some fret crowning files. Where's the best source for good files that won't blow the budget? Is it just at your "favorite" shop?
@robertpalmer48063 жыл бұрын
3 corner file. Check eBay for old jeweler's files or other American/European/Japanese made file that are free of rust. I just use a cheapo 3 corner file that I ground one corner off to a flat bottom which is the part that rides along the taped off fretboard. You start with long even strokes at a steeper angle and then rotate the file a few degrees until you round over the sides of the fret to make a nice crown in the center.

I was with ya till ya busted out D'Darrios. Yucky p'tooee. lol They just disintegrate to blackened dull ass sounding strings too quickly for me... That's if they go more then a week without breaking lol. It's often humid here... so maybe that plays a role... but Ernie Balls never let me down. They stay nice and barely ever break.. and make my string cleanings.... not a huge waste of time. The color coated ball ends are also kind of hilarious to me.. like if one is too dumb to tell the strings apart, they prolly shouldn't be changing strings on a guitar by themselves. I'd tell 'em, you'll shoot yer eye out kid... I'm not applying that to you... but just the fact that they do that.... means SOMEBODY found it necessary. :-P I laughed at the jail joke. I'm gonna use that one on a few people! :-) Good job overall... Kinda takes the piss out of some people that make set ups seem like this mysterious, difficult task. *thumbs up*
