**CORRECTION**
The Epiphone Les Paul Custom DOES NOT have a Maple Cap… it is Mahogany!
I misread the specs, as did the worker that I rented the guitar from.

I thought this meant that the Ebony had a regular Maple Cap. The sales clerk
Told me it was the same as a Gibson Custom as it was Mahogany with a Maple Cap, Binding all over the place, and a Mahogany Neck with an Ebony Fretboard.

I have the Epiphone LP Custom, and I have a Gibson LP custom. I love the Epiphone. It's definitely not a Gibson Custom Shop, but it isn't supposed to be. They are both best in their class. I enjoy playing them both. No one should kid themselves there is a $5000 difference between the two.

Great demo that shows the superb quality of the Epiphone, especially for the price! It has great clean tones and a more vintage / crunchy vibe versus the more boosted thick sound of the Gibson.

Thank you for mentioning the one thing that rarely gets talked about. So much time is spent talking about the cosmetics, pots, caps, pickups tuners, price etc. But how does it play? How does it feel under your fingers?

Thanks for the comparison! Not a lot between them, really. I have owned a 1968 LP Custom since the early 70s, still play it in the studio on projects, and recently I have checked out this Epi Custom and a couple of Gibson Custom Shop 68 Re-Issues - all pretty nice. The Epi impressed me because it has a darker 'mood' which I believe is due to the fact that it's solid mahogany - no weight relief (I may be wrong but that's what I've read in various places and it makes sense as the 50s Customs were built that way). Whatever - I felt 'at home' on the Epi and the Gibsons too but I don't 'need' another Custom . . . if I was still out playing live I'd grab the Epi in a heartbeat.

'68 Les Paul Customs are Non-Weight Relived as well. Most Les Paul Customs are non-weight relieved. Usually just one offs and different runs that have weight relief. I'd love to say that I don't "Need" another Custom... but I'd be lying to myself! The only problem I have is that the only Les Paul Custom that I really want is the 1957 Les Paul Custom... which is $9,300 Canadian. Cheers -Ryan

The inlay color difference is because the 80s Custom has aged over time.

It’s the same colour from when they were first released. Even though this dates back before the custom shop… you will notice lots of customs have the darker inlays. Not all, but most. Cheers -Ryan

I’ll be the goof.. Gibson and epiphone suck. I’ll play fender but it I must have a LP style guitar I’ll go with a tokai love rock

Damn I'd love to try guitars before I buy them, but the only store that sells brands like gibson and epiphone in my city doesn't let you try the gibsons unless you buy them (yeah, they said that, like you don't say, if I buy a guitar I'm obviously going to "try" it after I buy it) and I've never played any gibson so yeah, by feeling alone I can't do much, it's either that or taking a 3 hour flight to try some guitars that are even more expensive in other stores, or trying lots and lots of used guitars in other cities 🥲 if I'm spending such an amount of money I'd like to try the product. Sadly, youtube is the only source I have

Wow that sucks! That’s a horrible store! I don’t take my own advice, to be honest. I don’t have much time to try out guitars before I buy them. I usually order them blindly. HOWEVER, that’s only because I buy the same 3 brands because I know they work for me. I’m used to how they feel. Such a bad policy for a store! Cheers -Ryan
