The entire reason Gibson bought Epiphone is because Les Paul himself urged them to do so. So you have Les Paul to thank for it.
@GManWrites8 жыл бұрын
Guitar Nerd I knew that as well 😁
@SionynJones8 жыл бұрын
Guitar Nerd les paul worked for epiphone in new york were the first les paul was built. So In many ways a Gibson is a copy of epiphone. And back then epiphone were every way as good as a Gibson and in many ways far superior. One of the big reasons Gibson bought epiphone was so they could sell guitars that had contracts to sell Fender but not Gibson (sneaky). Les paul wanted epiphone to make his guitars but foolishly Anastasios Stathopoulos told him to scoot.
@ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy8 жыл бұрын
Indeed. But by the end of the 50s, Epiphone was struggling to survive. Not wanting to let such a company go, Les Paul pleaded to Gibson to save them. He said, "I am a Gibson man, but I will always be an Epiphone man." So, on May 10, 1957, Gibson bought Epiphone.

Had this guitar for maybe about a year now. Love it. Toss the toggle in the middle, tap the neck pickup, set neck volume and tone to 5, bridge volume and tone to 7, and you've got a beautiful sound. I believe the volume boost is +15 max, but +10 out of the box. It can be adjusted by a knob on the push-pull pot itself under the back cover. Also love how Rob is playing on the bridge pickup, but adjusting the neck tone like it's doing something. lol

You guys don't know your history. Epiphone was very successful from the 20's through the 40's. Epi was the heart, soul and brains of the company. He died in 1943 of leukemia, and his two brothers who took over did not get along and as a result the quality of the instruments and the way the company was run went down. They had union difficulties, fires, and eventually went bankrupt, and that is when Orphie, brother of Epi, offered to sell Gibson the bass tooling, which Gibson was looking to buy as they lost their bass tooling during the war. When they unpacked the crates, they also found the guitar tooling. It was Les Paul who advised them to offer the Epiphone brand as it was well known. Gibson turning Epiphone into a secondary Gibson line and a bargain version of Gibson is kind of a shame, since Epiphone really had been a recognized name,.

*On the Epiphones with humbuckers it is **_coil splitting,_** their customer service are aware that those little round knob tags are wrong but they don't want to go to the expense of making those little rings all over again. Coil tapping is when you have a second connection into the copper wiring wrapped around a single coil to bring it from (for example) 13.6 down to 8.2.. There are almost no guitars on the market today with actual coil tapping, and it's a feature that costs a pretty penny extra if you order it on a strat or tele from Fender. A humbucker is made up of two single coils, and splitting simply and quite literally means splitting it in half by turning off and bypassing one of the coils. You would be hard-pressed to find a standard guitar on any shelf these days with tapping. The problem is that a lot of derps think that the two terms mean the same thing and are interchangeable.*

Jordan Drake maybe so. A great amp can also make a good guitar sound amazing. And that's not going to be representative of the sound you'd get playing through the solid state or small tube amps that most people who are in the market for an Epiphone Les Paul will have. At least play through something like a Bassbreaker or DSL40c that might be a little more representative, rather than a handwired boutique amp that costs more than an actual Les Paul

I got one of these last month, and it's awesome, but for whatever reason mine came with the pickups connected backwards so that rhythm was the bridge and treble was the neck, fortunately it just uses connectors inside so I didn't have to do any soldering to fix it. Something cool I found from opening the compartment was that there's a tiny potentiometer on the boost circuit that lets you dial it back if you want a little less. Also they do come in other colors, I have a blue one, but I looked it up and you can also get it in wine red and black.
@rob_in_stowmarket_uk8 жыл бұрын
Lee - pull out the pot and, with the guitar amp'd, touch a pole piece from each coil with (say) the tip of an electrical screwdriver. It will then be very apparent if a coil is disconnected (split), or just the windings are reduced on both 'live' coils (tapped) ... Simples, innit?

Got one on sale last month at Guitar Center for my step-grandkid who just started lessons. Gorgeous axe in the Desert Burst body color. I liked it so much I just ordered one for myself in the Wine Red. Epiphone keeps the price down by reducing finishing costs with the neck & body back and sides done in a satin finish and using a standard neck on all the different color models but they beef up the electronics with coil splitting/tapping (you say tremolo and others say vibrato) and the on-board boost. A great value...especially with a $100 off at Guitar Center right now.
