I have not only not liked but arguably hated the SG for 40 yrs of guitar playing; all without having ever played one. Then last month I bought a new cherry 2020 61 Epiphone SG on a whim. Absolutely love it! What a moron I was/am🤦‍♂️. Great tone, light weight body. Personally I prefer to the Les Paul. I’ll have to see if I can justify this as well...I mean it’s a different colour. That will make all the difference surely. Great work as always Colin!

Thats how I was with Fender Telecasters and Gibson Les Paul's. My advice to people who are happy with their Epiphone Les Paul's, DO NOT play a Gibson, because...now I have 3 Gibson Les Paul's and I'm about to sell off my last Epiphone and other LP type guitars I've hung on to. I'm actually waiting for the Gibson SG Modern to arrive, then I'll be ok with selling my perfect Epiphone Tony Iommi SG, but only ok...barely at that lol.

@@kennethh2430 That's funny I am pretty much the opposite... I have owned multiple Gibsons for many years and since I started acquiring the latest Epiphones I have sold a couple of Gibson custom shop models because actually I don't really see the point in keeping them any more. We all have different inspiration and motivation I guess and it's just not possible to say one is better than the other because it entirely depends on your perspective.

My Friday morning has been made. Thank you for another fantastic video. These new Epiphones (this SG, the LPs, the 335s) seem like incredible value for the money. It's thrilling to me to see entry level to even one step up being this affordable and this High Quality. In my teen years in the 80s an entry level guitar was one you had to fight against constantly. @@marygaleac Hey Ashley, thanks! Soon after I watched this, I was able to find an unplayed 2013 in Classic White, which if I did my research correctly are pretty much identical to the '61 standards, with the only difference being the 2013 version has the smaller headstock, which I believe is more period correct, also I just really love the look of white SG's. Should be here at the end of the week. The only thing I'll need to change up is the collector I purchased it from bought the "upgraded" version, aka, mini etuners... I never got why players shun the SG. It’s gotta be one of the coolest rock machines out there, and has been for years. And bang for buck it offers great value imo (Standard v les paul standard etc). It’s a great live guitar as it’s light and offers great access all up the neck (compared to Les Paul etc). Quality guitar and fuckin sexy as hell 🤘 Side note, my standard is about 12 years old now and tuning is never an issue (even the dreaded G string) and honestly better than my Les Pauls

I came across your channel a couple of days ago. Congratulations, I really appreciate the work you put in and how you structure your reviews, talking about the facts and talking about the feelings/emotional side of the guitars you review. Back to the SG°s, the SG is probably an underrated guitar. I owned 3 of them and I loved them for their great tonal variety, their ease of play, the light weight and great playability = just pick them up and play, it is fun. I had one Gibson SG with P90s, loved it, an Epi 61 SG re issue with 490R / 490T and an Epi Prophecy with Gibson Dirty Fingers (a hell of a pick-up and Single Coil split). Only the Prophecy had a neck-dive problem (but heavily) and according to my research that was due to the leight-weight body, the heavier ebony fingerboard and the massive Grover tuners. However I liked it too. And do not be mistaken, you can play almost every style with an SG, it also makes for a great slide guitar. Great review and inspiring for those who haven*t tried an SG yet.

I went into a pawn shop when I was about 15 and picked up an old SG Standard, and I instantly fell madly in love. The neck played smooth as silk, and the guitar just felt like it belonged in my hands. Sadly, I didn't have an income at the time, so I couldn't buy it, but I've since made up for that. Twenty or more years ago I had an Epiphone SG Custom, three pickup model, what they called “ivory” off white finish. An homage to the one Hendrix played circa ‘69 although stop tail no vibrato bar. I believe it had rosewood not ebony fingerboard. When the opportunity came along around 2009 to acquire a Gibson SG Standard I parted ways with it. I still have the SG Standard which is fantastic but regret selling the Custom, it was a great playing guitar with unique tone.

It's just something people who like to complain, complain about. If they balanced the weight with more body mass, they would complain that it's too heavy. A lot of guitarists are notoriously finicky. They stick their nose up at any new innovation or anything slightly different.

it's not exaggerated it's a serious "thing." Love my SG but the neck dive is just a necessary side effect of how the guitar is built. I got a 3" wide sheepskin strap to add a lot of friction to keep it from diving, does the trick fine. It's a small price to pay really. It's such a good guitar otherwise.

Thank you for another excellent video I watch them every Friday morning! I have a large guitar collection with six of them being Gibsons and four Epiphones among others. I have a 2008 SG Classic p90 and a 2002 Faded SG with the crescent moon inlays and ebony fretboard. I really like SG guitars. I have a 2013 Zakk Wild Moderne of doom that has a richlite fret board. I thought it was ebony until I looked closer at the specs! There was a time when I would not even consider an Epiphone but not anymore!

Recently watched a few old videos with Joe Walsh after seeing his product demo for his new signature PRS. He showed how to set up a Gibson Les Paul entirely by ear and feel. He gave the same tuning advice - always tune up. If the string ever went out of tune during his setup, he would pull the string up quite vigorously to stretch the string and reseat it in the nut and bridge and then tune up to pitch. Works for me as well. I love my Epiphone SG.

Man, as always you take the right amount of time to properly run through things in the correct way. I actually had one of the Richlight SG 61s back in 2017. I actually loved the guitar but didn’t like the look of the board. It was too smooth for me and didn’t feel right so I parted with it. What I really like about the Epi SGs is the lack of binding on the body. On the LP Epis, it’s the body binding and where it meets with the finish that typically falls short in the qc area. I’m just nit picky about binding on any guitar at any price. Furthermore, with the Custom you get block inlays, ebony board and binding everywhere. It’s kind of a no brainer really. I own Gibsons and the Epiphone fits right in after a little TLC. Let’s see, 629 vs $3,799 🤔

An SG custom from Epiphone or Gibson would be my dream guitar as like you I love SG's. Seven years ago I actually bought a brand new SG standard in cherry after waiting eight years yearning after one. I had it a whole evening and night and realised I would have to sell it sooner rather than later as I'd spent every penny I had on it so took it back to the shop the next day, I lived the dream for a little bit hahaha! I must have owned more SG 'homages' both used and new than any other guitar, I've lost count tbh. They are so comfortable, nice and light and just COOL! It's a good job I'm not rich as I'd need to buy a house to fit my SG collection in. Great vid as ever, keep on playing and having fun my friend.

Sold my 69 dark mahogany w/ white guard custom triple with gold hardware and inlays , Di Marsios, wammy , Grover’s, weather checked SG guitar for $750. It had an original hard shell case also. This was back in the late nineties to help get into a mortgage. I paid $270. for it back in 1978. Now, with my kids grown, I’m seriously considering getting back in with this beautiful knock off and why not. These guitars feel great and sound authentic. Sure, it wouldn’t be considered a very appreciating investment ( who knows) but it probably won’t lose $ either just for fun. Thanks for your review because it has renewed my interest.

My first two Gibsons were an SG Delux, which I really do wish I still had, and an early 70's SG standard with an ebony neck and bock inlays with no binding. My 2001 Gibson SG Standard came stock with Grovers. Last year I put Grover locking tuners, which seem a bit better, but ultimately, they're really for just more convenient string changes. My 2005 Gibson ES-335 came stock with Grovers, but I like the traditional look of Kluson's much better. I recently put Kluson Deluxe (double ring, double line) tuners on my 335, along with conversion bushings from StewMac, and not only does it look better (IMO), but it sounds better, also.

My 'Vintage' brand in vintage white (which cost me £200) sat in the box for years because I preferred to play my strat or Yamaha SG but now has pride of place next to my chair so it's the first one I go to every time.
