I love every thing about it from the action (arguably a function of set up) to its sound. But, sadly, better guitar players than I will inevitably say 'That's pretty good (some even say 'surprisingly' good) considering that it's not a Strat.' I swear, if these snobs were handed my Raptor in the dark, they'd swear it was "Great!" or a Strat. I'm reminded of what a golf pro told me one time. 'The difference between a Calloway and a Dunlop Driver is the one stroke difference caused by the golfer's own confidence in the club!'

I used to have a Gibson Les Paul “Ebony Shred” it was essentially an ebony les Paul studio with a Floyd rose, but it featured a Richlite board. That fingerboard was heaven, easy to maintain and bends on it was like a level road for a Rolls Royce. I miss that guitar... whoever bought it is sitting pretty. If you see a guitar with this material sub $2000 then consider it!
@mateotrapiello11144 жыл бұрын
My stripped-down, affordable, yet perfectly built Sigma GME acoustic guitar does have a non-wood fingerboard. It's not Richlite, but unbranded micarta, which is kind of the same - a composite made out of different organic and artificial materials. I did know for sure it was no rosewood (my fingerboard is uniform matte black in colour, with no grain nor imperfections), but I didn't think it was made out of a synthetic material. In fact, I didn't even knew what it was until I checked out the specs on Sigma's webpage. It feels so natural and comfortable that... it's just not a problem, it doesn't make the instrument less "authentic" (which means whatever people want at any given time). In my humble opinion, there's no way to tell those materials apart from each other unless you decide to compare them with full knowledge of what you're playing. There may be differences in tone, of course, because every bit of material on a musical instrument does make a difference, even if it is subtle, but that doesn't mean the guitar is less of a guitar.

I'm not opposed to synthetic materials finding their way into guitars. Of course, then again, I'm a materials scientist and polymer chemist ironically working in the paper industry, so maybe I'm biased. I know the work that goes into developing materials like this, and I know that they can offer some real benefits! However, there's usually some down-sides as well. One of the biggest downsides is usually how the material acts with humidity changes. A lot of composites tend to show greater sensitivity to humidity. (Just look at my Martin Custom X with a laminate neck. That guitar needs a new setup every couple of months, whenever the humidity changes.) So looking into Richlite, it's essentially paper that has been saturated with PF resin. (It's the older brother of bakelite.) The PF is inherently hydrophobic, so it's probably a bit more robust than that laminate neck I mentioned. It does have formaldehyde, which really isn't great, but I will say that PF is a lot more hydrolytically stable than UF. (urea-formaldehyde) I'll also say that the hard & brittle nature of PF should lend itself to good acoustics. One other downside to composites like this is their weight. You wouldn't want an entire guitar made out of this stuff, but you won't notice the weight difference much on a fretboard. Overall, I don't think it's a bad thing, as long as it holds up with time. PF should be pretty stable, so hopefully a guitar made today won't change much in 50 years... though it might get that "old bakelite" odor! >.
@misterknightowlandco4 жыл бұрын
I don't want a guitar with formaldehyde in it. 😆 You'd think that would be an obvious statement, buuuut here cones Gibson...
@Dartheomus4 жыл бұрын
@@misterknightowlandco Well... Interesting fact about wood. All wood emits formaldehyde as it ages, however the amount is low. Unless you put something in the wood to absorb formaldehyde, it will emit a little bit. However, plywood and particleboards are usually held together with Urea-Formalehyde resin, and those will emit a lot of formaldehyde over the entire life of the piece. It will be worse in warm, humid environments. Phenol-formaldehyde is far less prone to this problem, and that's why it's commonly used in applications like OSB for roofing. At the end of the day, you get far more carcinogen exposure from the formaldehyde emitted from the furniture in your house than you would from this guitar neck. The sad thing is that if you were willing to pay about $0.10 more per board, you could have a formaldehyde free version. Even though you might find that reasonable, the furniture companies don't. Therefore, they stick with UF bound particleboard, putting both customers and manufacturing employees at risk. It's sad that regulations, particularly in the US, are so weak. =/
@misterknightowlandco4 жыл бұрын
@@Dartheomus 10 cents a board to someone buying the furniture isnt bad, but when your building thousands of pieces that's like 100,000k a production run 😆. I did not know that all wood emits formaldehyde. Thanks for the info.
@Dartheomus4 жыл бұрын
@@misterknightowlandco Yep, $0.10 is an actual estimate, not a fictional number, but you are correct.. it adds up. I know staying competitive in cost is tough, but that's why you get to put the "certified formaldehyde free" sticker on there. >.

Good lord the tones you're getting out of that... absolutely killer, no wonder you loved playing it. Coming from a guy who’s owned over 80 guitars both acoustic electric’s plus a bushel full of mandolins, banjo’s and various other string instruments. I didn’t buy any of these instruments because of the materials used to craft them. I bought them because I felt that they had something to offer. At times I was searching for a sound other times for a song. Most were bought to serve a purpose and when or if that purpose was achieved they were put away in cases Rarely if ever to be brought out again. Eventually I whittled the collection down to 16 guitars that I couldn’t live without and one mandolin One ukulele a banjo and Dobro ( by the way made out of metal with a resonator)These are the instruments that surprise me with their ability to help with my creative process.. I think that’s really the bottom line is whatever helps you be creative. Good luck Paul with your SG... I think those thin body Gibsons like the melody maker and SGs are some of my favorite guitars . as someone who's recorded epiphones, fenders, ibanez, ESPs, gibsons etc. in a full band mix the natural sound of the guitar is somewhat negligible with the differences much more obvious out of a mix. the biggest differences really come from the pickup type rather than the wood itself. the amp type or how you're running it can be a night and day difference. for example a tube amp with or without a tube screamer sounds much more different than lets say an epiphone vs a gibson or an ibanez strat type vs a strat.

Thanks for the video. Here is our experience of a Gibson J45 Standard Rosewood v a Martin DX Johnny Cash signature acoustic Richlite. I bought the Martin late 2019 to back up my son's Gibson J45 which was taking a few knocks gigging three times a week (bars, clubs, hotels). The entire guitar is essentially re-purposed wood - HPL body (high pressure laminate), a multiply Birch laminate neck and Richlite on the finger board. It remains a Martin design with a M&T neck joint, X-Bracing, Tusq nut /saddle and Martin branded tuners. I tweaked the truss rod and lowered the string height a touch on receipt, cleaned / lubricated the nut and re-stringed with Martin Authentic Acoustic Lifespan® 2.0 Phosphor Bronze strings (13s). Genuinely, this guitar has been incredibly stable with changing temperatures both internally and externally (during the Summer) and has not moved in it's set up over 11 months and 100 outings (1 to 2 hours each). My son is 20 and plays Indie Rock predominantly and we normally go through strings every other month - the strings lasted an incredible 7 months with a little pre-gig FastFret. The neck and headstock are tough as we found out when our Labrador at 4.8 stone ran into the guitar stand and the guitar 'bounced' off the wall - no damage. Apart from being gig tough, the guitar cleans up nicely with a damp cloth (beer mostly from enthusiastic audiences) and a little light polish. The Fishman pickup system has been reliable only requiring a new battery at 10 months. Is the tone any good though? We play the DX through a Yamaha Stagepas 600 PA (with EQ / mixer / reverb and an additional floor monitor) or for small rooms a Marshall AS50D - in both cases the Martin rings and sounds punchy (for rock) at high volumes with the mids and bass rolled off a touch. It has a decent amount of bass (a full dreadnought) although not with the smooth warmth and bell like tone of the J45 - however this was 4 x the cost of the Martin. For the type of live work my son is playing, it certainly cuts through the noise of the bar and is far from 'cheap' sounding with its Martin design underpinnings. It has become my sons number one for live gigs. If low maintenance and durability, at a reasonable cost interest you, I would take a look. Don't be put off by the materials - try one for yourself. In this clip you can hear the guitar ring - it is in a radio studio although without the Fishman, straight into a desk microphone, no pedals, and the barest of (engineer applied) reverb as you can hear on my son's voice into the same microphone. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5S5gKVnnKmEesk&ab_channel=Spartanm333 Guitar detail: www.martinguitar.com/guitars/custom-signature-editions/dx-johnny-cash/ . Three reasons for wood snobbery: 1 - Every piece of wood is unique and that's exciting. Also wood ages so that's exciting too. 2 - The first artificial materials / plastics were terrible, and that negative reputation has been passed down through the generations, even though we now have better materials than many natural ones. Also, they don't age, or at least not well. 3 - Nostalgia. Wood and leather are both obsolete materials but still popular. Because they are the oldest material art/craft in human history, it's deeply ingrained in our perceptions of beauty and quality. Consistency and performance are good for function, for tools. But art and inspiration are all about personality and quirks. And with our surroundings becoming increasingly artificial and impersonal, every little bit of nature we can hold on to, in any form, becomes a sort of necessity.

With that being said, though, if a guitar sounds good, plays good and looks good, it's good. It could be made from tin can scraps encased in PVC for all I care, as long as it's doing those 3 things.

fully agree that wood can matter a lot. I prefer satin maple personally for fingerboards. It just feels better to me. Plus looks are important. I mean, you’ll be seeing that thing often. It just doesn’t matter really for tone (for electric guitars anyway).

Richlite is in the family of processed natural fabric and resin laminates, which have a history going back over 100 years. This material is most often encountered under the trade name "Micarta" (also trademarked like "Richlite"), and is often built of canvas, linen, or paper layers laminated under pressure. It's a very durable, stable, shapable material. We use these materials in custom knife making (and the production knife world too) all the time. It's good stuff when used appropriately. Guitars are steeped in tradition, so I get the resistance, but if I were paying for a workhorse rather than a work of art, I might be seriously swayed toward a purchase by an instrument that used materials like this in the right place.

I always find it humorous when people start to talk about wood choices on an electric guitar. The pick and strings have a much greater affect on your sound. The scale length and pickups play a lot more into the electric guitar and it's sound. The bridge choice on most Gibson guitars doesn't translate much in the way of vibrations in the guitar body, so there really isn't a lot the the wood choice or much less the fingerboard choice would change. Really it's about it's durability and how it feels to play on it. There are a few things that could create variables, but nothing that would be Earth shattering.
@SionynJones4 жыл бұрын
as much as i love real wood and traditional tone wood it comes at a high environmental cost. Long straight pieces of wood must come from hardwood canopy trees which take long to grow. Although i think its a fitting end for tree to end up beautiful instrument. The other major issue is with natural variation not every tree is the same without knowing the quality of underlying wood its quite wasteful process fining both a piece that has nice tonal properties and is aesthetically pleasing. Not good ethically or environmentally. Using wood composites change that, it takes away the natural variation and gives you a constant product.

Paul, that intro though *chef's kiss* ! I did have an LX1 Martin that had the Richlite fretboard. I can't really comment on tone, but the feel was just like smooth ebony to me. I now have a '67 00-18 and a '99 HD-35 Martin, and I can't say that the fretboards feel any better than the LX1. Tone is obviously a different story, but that's because of the bodies and materials there. Plus, you know... 20+ and 50+ year-old wood.

In 1970 I traded a 1969 SG Custom even for a 1961 Les Paul Custom that had a lot of miles on it. I owned and loved that guitar for 35 years. It was my primary stage guitar until damaged in a punk club in the early 80s. I sold it for way too much money in 2005 because it needed work and it would be fully restored. It was simply the best playing guitar that I have ever touched. It was more responsive and easier to play than anything else. I had no neck or headstock issues, but then I never dropped it either. Neck dive on SGs can be cured simply by using a suede backed strap. I recently replaced that love of my life with a 2020 Epiphone 1961 Les Paul Custom that looks exactly like your Gibson. I've had it Plek'd and upgraded the tuners to locking Klusons. It is as I close as I will ever get to my original 1961. I hope you enjoy your SG Custom as much as I did/do.

If tone comes at all from the fret board at all then I would be more concerned about putting lacquer on top of my maple necks, or even the body for that matter. That said, I don't believe it will make a lick of difference to the sound of the guitar. If it holds up well over time then I will be fine with owning one
@bennymountain14 жыл бұрын
There used to be a belief that some old toxic lacquer (the one that cracks over time) is what gives vintage Strats their 'glassy' tone. Get it? It cracks like glass, so it must be where the glassy tone comes from!

Paul- That intro was killer! I picked up one of Martin's affordable guitars a few months ago. I wanted something decent I could travel with, had electronics, and still sounded good acoustically. As all my other acoustics have either Rosewood or Ebony, I was skeptical of the Richlite fingerboard. I haven't had any negative issues with it, but the guitar (dreadnought) is surprisingly quiet when being finger picked compared to the volume it's capable of putting out while being strummed. I can't help but wonder if it's caused by the Richlite fingerboard. Sending peace & love from Missouri, USA -Todd

On the last week of Dec 2020 A 2017 Gibson SG Standard Ltd. Ed. with Gibson's best hardshell case showed up in my radar. An antique dealer had it. It had never ever been played. He priced it in my mind as a used 2017 appliance at about 30 % less than new. With room to move ...down. I got it for $800.00 USD and that included shipping over 43000 miles. I am 74 years old and have owned virtually everything Gibson had on offer for Rock. LP's, SG's, Flying V Firebird, ES335 even a Melody Maker. Most were late 50's or early 60's guitars too. Keep in mind I bought them for used guitar prices in the mid to late 60's. But the new SG is the best sounding one I ever owned.
