This time in The Room of Rock we take a closer look at the Epiphone SG400 we bought for the headstock modification project we did. The guitar that was only bought as a test piece turns out to be a rather nice guitar. Have a look and see what you think

@@airdog1829 thank you, I think the disparity between the body and neck is too much for changing to lighter tuners to over come. My Vintage V130 is the same and that has vintage style 3 on a plate tuners on it. The amp is my Marshall JCM 900 1x12 Hi Gain Dual Reverb

Its amazing how many good quality budget guitars there are nowadays. When i first started playing in the mid eighties there seemed to be a big gulf between the cheaper guitars which were so bad they put you off playing and the much higher priced, higher quality, guitars. Great in depth description and some helpful tips too.

Learning the guitar during lockdown and this was the best used guitar I could find locally under £200. I was worried it was a one trick pony and it would only be good for rock and metal but although I'm still learning I'm finding it suits all styles of music really well.

Believe it or not, three weeks ago I picked up a FREE 2006 Epi SG 400 guitar (my first SG) with a cracked neck, a very used body, and no hardware/wiring at all except for the bridge assembly. $160 (parts/tools) later I now have a rock-solid rock machine that plays like a dream, aside from just a hair of very manageable neck dive. I'm SO glad you talked about the volume difference between the two pickups. I was wondering if my new Epi Probucker bridge pickup was somehow defective, with the noticeably reduced volume as compared to the neck pickup. So it's not just my ears. Cool review. Thanks.

My very first guitar was a 1971 Japanese 'lawsuit' SG cherry with vibrola. I taught myself to play it by listening to Hendrix, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc, it was my first love 😉 My second guitar was a 1975 Gibson Flying V, needless to say these 2 will always be my most favorite guitars. Whenever I see one I want to buy it 😂 too bad I'm skint af after my post-Covid guitar and gear buying spree. But I am gonna try and find an SG 400, I don't think it's that expensive and I really like it.

Good review and some useful tips. Not sure about the weight, my SG G400 Pro is 7lb 3oz; still a nice light guitar. I think it's a great guitar for the price, especially used prices. As you say, a right angle plug/adapter is wise. Never thought about the susceptibility of the jack above the cavity; that plate mod is clever for a gigging musician (could also add some lead in there to reduce neck dive 😉).
@theroomofrock6456

Thank you, I am glad you liked the video. When I bought mine the previous owner warned me a bout the neck dive and I always play it with a strap on even seated. Whilst not curing it, it does help you catch the neck if suddenly wants to take a dive. Weight wise they will vary guitar to guitar but as you say they are a very light guitar and you could play all night without noticing it is there.

Your model looks like one produced between 2004 & 2009 but the headstock is different. Did you say that you changed the shape of the Headstock which would have been the 'clipped ear' type originally?

I apologize for my ignorance but I have wanted to play electric guitar for a long time and I found an Epiphone SG deluxe faded blue. They sent me a demo video but my question is if you can get the Bridge dirty with this guitar or do you need to buy something?
@theroomofrock6456
@theroomofrock6456 5 ай бұрын
Hi, do you mean get a dirty (distorted) sound out of the bridge pick up? If so the answer is yes, but you either need an overdrive channel on the amplifier or a distortion peddle to do this.

Hi, I feel this guitar is good enough for anything you want to do with it both beginner and advanced player. I would happily gig it and have recorded numerous things on this channel with it. The only it might benefit from is a pick up upgrade but it sounds great straight out of the box.

Whilst the neck isn't as skinny as some of the Squire necks, I think smaller hands would be fine. I would always recommend you try one out in a shop first to see if you like the feel.

It's actually not real mahogany. The Epiphone G-400 is made of Philippine/Indonesian mahogany (more commonly known as Luan, Lauan or Meranti, botanic genus Shorea which has 196 subspecies), which is not actually related to the mahogany species. In 2005, Epiphone began putting thin veneers of African mahogany on the front and back of the Cherry finished G-400s. G-400 "Vintage" worn cherry / worn brown models manuifactured in Korea from 2002 to 2005 (UnSung and SaeIn plants, serial numbers starting with U or I) have solid three-piece bodies made from Nyatoh (palaquium spp.) without a veneer.
