I have a mature 16 year old epiphyllum, and it somehow hybridized itself. It was throwing beautiful hot pink with light pink and white flowers. Then it branched more one year and those flowers are a very light pink flower!

Amazing how different care is between your climate and a more tropical location. Now, other than my Ric Rac, I've gotten rid of the lot after the landscapers knocked the stand they were on over and the plants got broken to bits. The Ric Rac is going to have to be put in a large basket and hung somewhere, it is rather a beast.

I inherited one of these plants 2 years ago. I'm embarrassed that have not been caring for it as I should, mostly because I had no informationon how to do it. It has grown these LONG 4 foot stems that hung down, so I put them on a trellis and the leggy stems grew wide "leaves" on the ends, the plant is large and unwieldy. To be honest this is the most ridiculous looking plant I have, but I love it, the thick wide stems are so unique, lol. I was told it flowered but it never has, likely due to my uninformed care. I really needed this information. Hopefully I can get it to bloom now. Fantastic video on Epiphyllum, very helpful what, what a gem you are for sharing your wonderful knowledge.. 3:14 and 12:25 - - Interesting material to cover the greenhouse: bubble wrap plastic. Designed for shock absorption and mechanical protection; as collateral property, it is indeed a very good thermal insulator. Great for a residential green house, indeed. The only unknown is long term coping with UV rays of the sun. Most plastics are degraded by sun over years.

Thank you for all information. My rarest cactus is Disocactus Jenkinsonii. It has been in the family since 70´s. It is very tall, ca 1,5 meters. It used to have flowers but not during 10 years. It tolerate also shadow. I have also some really old so called Christmas cactus. They are old and different than these modern Christmas cactus sold during these days. I got cuttings from Estonia and even from Russia. Their leaves are different. Greetings from Finland.

@@GardeningatDouentza Peonies love sun! Old roots are not problem. Do not plant them too deep in soil. They dont´t get flowers. Root must be near the top soil, ca 1 cm. Planting too deep it s typical mistake. You have now chance check situation and rise them up. If they have already pink growing point it must be in sun, not under soil. My peonies have beautiful flowers.

Hi there and congratulations on your blooms. If you leave the flower it should produce a fruit over time. Personally I don't like to allow the plant to produce fruit as maturing seed detracts from the plant's reserves. I wait until the fruit forms a little bit, making it easy to just twist slightly so that it comes away cleanly. Hope this helps.

Such a wonderful video! Thank you I have 6 epiphyllums and they are couple of seasons old. No blooms yet, that's understandable, they're babies. But they are getting slightly woody at the base of the stem, its not spreading. We did have a lot of rain but the well draining soil did ok and is quite moist but not very wet. Should I be worried and take cuttings and repot? Or should I repot the epiphyllums as a whole with new slightly drier (than the current ) soil?

I would be inclined to repot the plants. Moist soil isn't really what you want for epis. Some plants do get woody bases so I wouldn't worry about that. Hope this helps and sorry for the delay in replying.

So glad I came across this video. My epi's were starting to look so bedraggled and I didn't know what was wrong especially the white one on the stop. It is about 40 to 50 years old and had gotten very woody, now I am lucky it still got about 3 stems on it with a very woody. I inherited it from my late mom and even she didn't know how to care for them. So thank u a thousand times. When I get up later as it still very early here in South Africa 4.45 🙄😊😉 I know a few stems are broken so will cut that and leave it before I replant. I also want to put it on itz own and not with other cacti. I think I might have watered too much so will let it dry out now. I am now quite excited about finding this video. So my red one is blooming so I will leave it but the white is battling along and want to put it into terrocotta pots now at the moment the red one is in a plastic pot and when I tried to move it the plastic all broke 😕 so it reporting time for the white one. Hello I just been blessed with my first season of beautiful flowers from three little cuttings. I received a summer ago. My question is once the flowers bloom do you deadhead them or just leave them and their stems alone?

Congratulations. That's just wonderful. If you want fruit or seed then leave everything intact on your epi. However, personally I don't want these so I prefer to remove the spent flower and not put that strain on the plant. It's probably best to remove it on your plants too as they are quite young. Do you have any good way of supporting Epiphyllum stems? My Epiphyllum oxypetallum grows really big lately, keeping sending new shoots upwards some of which are 3 feet long. I used to bring it outside during the growing season but now I am afraid it is too top heavy to be put outside.

Really mature plants can get enormous. I have seen people use metal rails or pedestals for giant plants but these are custom made I suppose you will have to take comfort it the fact that you are a victim of your own suçcess!

Yes you can. Orchid fertiliser is unlikely to have too much nitrogen.

Potting and the mix is dealt with at 14:35 in the video. No need to pot if you are lucky enough to grow in a warm enough climate to grow epiphytically.

I have that one too.. I have. that one called queen of the night it has the same bloom I had a bloom last fall and it was 10 inches across I got up at midnight measured it at 10_inches ,,,it only lasted a day but wow that was a big one both types bloomed but queen of the night was huge do they have one with a yellow bloom?

Wow, that sounds so amazing. I brought my whole family out to the greenhouse at night to view my one in bloom. The scent was intoxicating. I don't know about a night-flowering yellow epi but there are plenty of day-flowering ones. 'Cooperi' is currently my favourite but, let me tell you a secret, my 'King Midas' is going to flower this year for the first time. Can't wait for those enormous golden blooms! Scale is difficult to eradicate. I would suggest that persistence over a period of time is more effective than changing product.

Hi Rachel, my friend gave me an epiphyllum plant that she made from hers which bloomed pink. The one that she gave me will be 2 years old this summer 2022, but they grow 5 long round stems that looks like antennas that are 5 feet. Is this normal? Should I cut these antennas stems off because the leaves blooms flowers?

The antenna leaf growth you describe is perfectly normal. Don't cut them! Hope this helps.

My plant has grown pretty good during the summer. It was on the patio. The leaves look pretty but they are limp. I only water it once per month. Should I start to water it every 2 weeks?

Once a month is too little unless you are overwintering in a cold greenhouse. Here's a recap of the watering info in the video : When in active growth, epis should be watered with copious amounts of water whenever they dry out completely. In a greenhouse epis will tolerate a winter minimum of 5°C (41F) providing they are kept dry. Keeping them bone dry, from November to March enables them to tolerate the winter lows. If you are growing your epis indoors, then you don't need to worry about keeping them bone dry in winter. You should continue watering throughout winter whenever the plants dry out, giving them a little water each time rather than soaking them. Increase watering gradually in spring.

Make sure your epi has enough light and you're not overfeeding it. Insufficient light or overfeeding can give rise to legginess. Some epis, however, are just leggy by their nature and there's nothing you can do about that.

Hi I love your❤ video can you please tell me how often I should water my Queen of the night plant???? I live in South Florida someone said water it every 2 weeks???? Some people say every week????? The person I bought it from said no water from November to March but I've been watering every 2 weeks the coldest it gets down here is 45 degrees on my patio that's only for 2 weeks but normally it's 60°at night so what do you do when it's 60° at night and now it's 70° at night and 80 during the day and it's hot and sunny on patio so should I give it more water now the weather here is now like summertime in Ireland' 69 at night 79 during day in a couple of months it will be 90°outside how much water do I give it then??? What's the best way to find information reliable information on these plants because I get different information from different sources I never know what to trust please help me in on what to do with these plants I also have a big orange tree growing on my back porch and the leaves are turning brown am I giving it too much water I was watering once a week it's 6 the tall it's too big I should plant it outside but my association doesn't want oranges with oranges falling down on people so I have it growing in a large container any information on these plants be appreciated they also have two gardenia plants how often do I water them???

If your lowest temperature is 45F (and only for 2 weeks) then water your epi according to the instructions in this video for epis kept in the house.

As for watering fruit trees, water them whenever they dry out and give them lots of water. Yes, sounds like your orange needs to go in the ground.

I really like this video it is really helpful... I'm still learning.. I have a Epiphylum orchid cactus Red... I assume it is because it looks like it... a co worker gave me cuttings 15 years ago and it has flowered many times it has had some fungus in the past with those spots that you've shown... I just pruned 3 pieces and dried them for 5 days about 12 inches long then potted them... It's been about a month all of a sudden 2 of them started growing roots on the top of the stem and now 1 is starting to turn white and thin on the lower part of the stem.. I've never seen that before... Is that a fungus or disease when it turns white... and why is the stems growing roots in the top of the stem... Can you please please give me any advice... ​@@ruthlee2849Well,some varieties can grow roots every which way but I assume this is a variety you propagated before. I don't know what's going on really. I would have been inclined to unpot and put the roots below the soil but if the green is going white that won't help. Sorry to not be able to help more.

Hi just wanted to give you some feed back.. they are aerial roots but I think it may had gotten a fungus or something because it started shriveling and it was also dying.. I also had a small terracotta pot with three small cuttings that I bought through Etsy and they were fine.. but all of sudden those started turning white and thin and started dying.. I had to throw away both pots.. something was spreading.. thank you for hearing me out.. I'm still learning and all your information teaches me new things that I didn't know.. :)

Epiphyllum roots are often very dry.vwhen the plant starts to droop then you have a problem!
