It's possible that superstition is somewhat as usefull as fear in life, and is only a problem when it becomes completely overwhelming. Some personal superstitions grow from pattern recognition in statistical data gathered from the senses during personal experiences. In the absence of imediate certainty or a fully reasoned conclusion, superstition within reason mite be the best option.

To the question why nature is so perfect for us I would say we as living organisms adapted to it, not that it adapted to create perfect beaches for us to have our holidays at.

This idea of the enlightenment of "all" of humanity is hyper eurocentric, and furthermore doesn't address the horrific ideas many of these thinkers also held along with their good ones.

Cast multiple fallacies like a retiarius hurling his nets, and keep em coming. Make vague assertions that reference something that might exist so that your opponent's own imagination tangles around his feet. Be perfectly obtuse, like a Captain America shield of not give a f. Pretend to agree to throw your opponent off balance. Stampede over widely accepted definitions with something invented on the spot just to cause both frustration and obfuscation. Demanding evidence of an unobtainable standard. The dude is a professional debate troll finger painting feces on everything within his reach.

Haha "Inception anti-semitism." Also, I'm not a fan of militant atheists like Richard Dawkins, but there's a great criticism of Bill O'Reilly's argument for God.

Dawkins’ brand of atheism is as dogmatic and corrosive as any of the religions he chooses to vilify. I say this as an avowed atheist; our collective intelligence will benefit from his inevitable departure from it.

As always anything can be said about Christians but not about Muslims, not even reading something said by a famous philosopher 300 years ago. Just pointing out. Thanks for your work, love your podcast.

@@dik9091 could be a factor! Like for instance young kid growing up, raised to hate ppl different to him, and seeing his social network glorify a relative or a friend who did a terroristic act could be a major factor. I think they look up to and idolise some of these guys like how ppl like us who grow up in western countries idoliseronaldo, messi, actors, musicians etc.

The word superstition is often applied to indigenous religions and even eastern religions. That is , most of the time, a very politically incorrect and evil move from christian missionaries.

This is why i do not agree with the beggining of the podcast: superstituos people IS stupid people (even me or you when atributting a false cause to anything). The thing is, if you do not actually KNOW the cause of any event that concerns you, you should investigate. And if the event is not yet explained by cience (or if it is an event not likely to be ever explained by cience) the WISE thing to do is to dont give a fuck about the causes. Simple. Because when we create a mithological world, OUTSIDE NATURE, we are most likely convinced that WE ARE RIGHT. And this moral superiority of our own view (because obviously every one sees his own view as moraly superior, otherwise they would not believe in it), in regard to things that CANNOT be proven, is what engenders this missinterpretation of human nature and, consecuently, a lame way of confronting the contradictions that lays upon conciousness.

17:33. often the whole process of how Judaism gave birth to the ideas by which made Voltaire furious, is not kept in mind. Moses (or the concept of moses, for those who doubt his actual existence, as many scientists do) wanted to create a good society. He didnt care too much about the personal virtues or believes, as long as the jew was following the rules of his Torah. Not what we today call Torah, but the Torah that moses gave, that is the directions of how to behave. Practically a legislation. He himself was not recommended for emulation, and nobody else was. In the commandments it does not say "be good" or "be virtuous" rather: do or dont do. When he "said to god" that the (primitive) people in the desert will ask him: Who sent you? "God replied" tell them ""whoever I may be" sent me". אהיה אשר אהיה. tell them to call me "beingness (יהוה) sent me". There is no mention in the "old" testament as to who wrote the rest of the text of the bible. And the people of moses were chosen by god not as superior, but as obliged to grab the Knaanite territory and establish the ideal society which Moshe envisaged. Therefore for the original concept of Judaism the question of God's existence was solely a question of accepting the abstract, transcendental validity and authority of legislation. All the rest, for them, was originally a decoration. Rituals etc. To abide to other gods would me to change the principles along which this Utopian (in Moses eyes) society would live. The original principle was: There is this ideal legislation. The authority is an abstract transcendental God. There is the Israelite community who is to live by it. If they will, God will be satisfied and reward them, if not, he will be angry and punish them. Only later in books like Genesis or job the drama of the totality of god developed: He created, he is omniscient, omnipresent, developed. In retrospect it is claimed that God Yehova who created the world (as opposed to "in the beginning Elohim created etc. Elohim is a plural for "god" in its pagan sense, what embarrassment). Only gradually developed the obsessive, bloody, cruel, endless, debate about who is the right god (Muslim, Christian, Jewish), who are the legitimate prophets, what is a Messiah (the meaning being simply anointed [in olive oil], that is, declared kind), who is the true godly society, which is the legitimate church system, etc etc., And indeed, the idea of Moses had both positive and negative far reaching results. Positive: compare to later Roman empire, The law in judaism is not in the authority of any ruler, but eternally valid, as it was signed by a transcendental, single, abstract (any physical representation is forbidden), so it is stable, "eternal", let us hope it is good enough to justify it's stability. Negative: first, the problem of gradual irrelevance of old regulations to modern time. Jews solved it partly by assigning the authority of interpretation and reform to the Rabbis of each period. Second, and maybe worse, the obsession with the presence or absence of an abstract total god, which for many is a permanent dissonance to their life experience, has been torturing the people of the monotheistic religions ever since Moses. How much less neurotic are the Chinese and Indians "religions" (religions in the sense of ethic code of behavior and freedom to chose their spiritual landscapes). But then again, see the abysses of societies under totalitarian rules into which societies were and are being thrown, and you begin to wonder....
