I want my government to have the preparations of a pessimist and the strength of the optimist in dealing with current and future nationwide problems. We can learn from both the pessimists and optimists, there should be a balance between them just like the shadow and light of our psyche. Thank you for your profound insights in your shows.

I would say I have a pessimistic leaning worldview but a very optimistic attitude. In order to make a positive change in your life, you first have to believe you can.

In my eyes, what you portrayed isn't true optimism. In my opinion there are two kinds of optimisms (is that even a word?). The one you described is the naive one. It's just looking away and pretending everythings fine. But for me true optimism means, that even if something bad happens, there is always something that will be useful to you or can be seen as good. Even something as terrible as the death of a close person. It can make you stronger in the end, if you choose to. It's not just saying, everything is good or will be going to be good by itself, it's rather about evaluating the bad situation to find something that will be useful for you in a way. Most of the time it's the going to be that you can learn something out of it, to grow to an even better person. That way of thinking will bring you to great success in my eyes. You can also choose whether you will see the world as a pessimist, just because it's easier. You don't have to put in the work to search for something positive. In the long run it won't really make you really grow as a person.

Hearing the same stuff about optimism over and over doesn't persuade me that it works. Knowing about economic crashes and disappointments in my life convince me it doesn't.

TL/DR: Stephen West treats optimism and pessimism like they are mutually exclusive opposites, but that isn't true. Rather optimism and pessimism often exist within the same point of view... I think this is a somewhat superficial treatment of pessimism, in the sense that it pigeonholes pessimism as array of different flavors of personal pessimism -- the belief that nothing can ever go well for *me,* or that ultimately everything will always "ends in tears" for any given individual. This isn't always the case. "Conservative pessimism" and stoicism are illustrative examples. Conservative Pessimists and Stoics are often mistaken for optimists, and in fact they are optimists in some ways -- because they believe, given enough time and hard work and faith in oneself and dedication to reason, a good and fulfilling life is always within reach, no matter who you are or where you're from. That is a very optimistic view. However their optimism never extends beyond the individual, and when they are confronted with all of the suffering which is a direct result of the fundamental structure of society their pessimism starts to show -- because even though they acknowledge that "there are problems" with society as it is and that these problems are very serious, they don't believe that there is any solution to them. (Jordan Peterson believes that poverty and the misery it causes are terrible, but poverty always has and always will exist, and therefore we simply have to tolerate the idea that there will always be some people who are relegated to destitution. Epictetus believed that a slave can lead a good and worthy life, but never questioned whether anyone should accept the existence of slavery -- especially the slaves themselves. In both cases the attitude toward suffering caused by society itself is: "it is what it is.") When anyone proposes solutions, particularly ones which require fundamental changes to the way society operates, they always argue that these changes are either impossible to achieve, or that they will inadvertently make everything worse, or both. They are optimistic that one's personal life can always be improved, but they are pessimistic that the world / society can ever be improved beyond what it currently is. So they advise us to ignore improving society (because it is not within our power to do so) and focus solely on improving ourselves. If we must engage in politics, it is only to prevent people from implementing changes which will ruin everything. In other words, the best we can do is uphold, maintain, and learn to thrive (as best we can) within the current order. We cannot create a better one. Mind you I'm not advocating for or against these views. I'm merely pointing out how, rather than being polar opposite viewpoints, optimism and pessimism can and generally do exist within one and the same point of view.

Personal finance is not analagous in any way to national finance. Austerity works on a personal level, but national austerity will crash the market.

I disagree with this episode's conclusion. Voltaire implied that optimism can blind us from bad things and promote complacency. That's bullshit, you can be an optimist AND not be complacent.

Pessimist here. Optimists always have such a superior attitude. What I always here from their patronising attitude is; "Aww, poor pessimist. But don't worry. If you just try hard enough, I'm sure one day you'll see the light like us."

Good job, i cringed through a good part of this video. I haven't cringed this hard since listening to a video on Michelle Carter-- --Let's try to keep a separation between what "is" and what sort of framework / viewpoint might lead to increased chances of success - these are two fundamentally different things, and the latter shouldn't necessarily dictate the former as is common in america of late. Granted, that assumes legitimacy to the former, but regardless of your epistemological/phenomenological/ontological assumptions involved there's quite a big difference, regardless of teleology, or if teleology should matter to begin with. IE, you seem to be mixing up utility of a certain viewpoint with whether the viewpoint itself is more valid, or which one is more accurate. That itself can lead to disaster, let alone whether it's empirically "true" or not. --You are mixing up too much philosophy with psychology, obviously. There's a difference between psychological mood and philosophical orientation, obviously. --It seems to me that humanity - as whole - has an optimism bias if anything, with pessimists being the exception rather than the rule. There's a reason why antinatalism is still considered passe, and why many people think such people have undiagnosed mental illness for not following a more optimistic view of life / existence / etc. --"ignorance is bliss" can be taken any number of ways, but frankly I'd say the gist of the characterization is the increasing alienation resulting from increased knowledge - --As people age, (and from anecdotal experience here) they see their own constructed narratives (a mixture of those made up of themselves as well as fictions made by wider society) be falsified, or at least questionable, from religion/god to proper ways of living to growing up as a happy peasant and then visiting the mansions in Newport, etc. It need not even be this involved, "you youngsters and your iphones and never play outside" etc. etc. --True, much depends on how people take things / adversity / whatever, but - and I think for most - the relative successes / pleasures are miniscule compared to the work / suffering required. If anything this is what the optimistic bias seems to forget for most people, in the long run. I think that many people, if given a choice and looking throughout the totality of their lives, were to be given the choice of having existed, or not - there'd be a sizeable minority which would say "hell no. count me out." There's nothing more "wrong" with such a view unless you are being tautological.

Optimism bias? Bullshit. Look around you. You don't see anyone saying they're gonna be able to do it, just people putting themselves and everyone down. How many positive conversations do you see people have? I'm legitimately asking you this. That's bullshit, dog. I'm not denying there's a good portion of normies who believe and spouse bullshit platitudes, that's definitely a thing, but to say that is the overall composition of people's thinking, no, no. That thing about mixing up psychology and philosophy, he's mixing them up because they are mixed up. He doesn't have to use the specific words you want in the exact way you want. For everything else you said, there's enough truth in it. It would been nice if you used timestamps.
