I heard a scientist type talking about the psychology of hurting robots for real and she said the research showed that most people don't like to hurt even toy robots that have a face and/or bits of "personality". She actually said that people who could hurt those robots with no qualms also had characteristics of domestic and animal abusers. She said law enforcement already consider cruelty to animals to be a flag that someone may be a domestic/child abuser, and she speculated that in the future they might treat cruelty to robots as the same sort of flag.

When my brother got his BA in CIS he actually wrote his thesis on robot ethics. The whole thing was super fascinating. As soon as robots exhibit traits representative of humans/animals, people start to feel empathy for them. Logically there’s no reason why we should, but we can’t seem to help it.

This is interesting, I actually get defensive of my Amazon Alexa when someone is mean to her (i.e. she doesn’t play the right song and someone says something like “you suck”, I’m like she’s trying). I don’t understand why i’m treating her like she’s a human being with feelings.

Oh my gosh, ROBERT!!! I am the same way with inanimate objects (even the crisps/chips!) 😂 My husband and I went out of town for a friends wedding a couple of weeks ago, and I bought new shower sponge/loofahs from Target, so we could just take our old ones with us and toss them in the hotel room bin before we left. My husband was going to take the new one instead, but (like a total loon) I INSISTED that he take the old loofah, so we could throw them away together in the same bin instead of separating them and leaving them to “die” alone. I 100% blame growing up with the Toy Story franchise for these feelings 🤣🤣🤣 Loved this by the way. You Welsh boys can do no wrong in my book. I love watching or listening and laughing along with you! 💜

Omg! I've never met anyone who gets that same feeling with inanimate objects like Robert was describing. Like when I was a child I had to put say the colouring pencils back in their box in the right order so they would be next to their "friends". It got to the point where if I ripped the tag of something I had to find the other bit of the little plastic thing so that I could put them in the bin together. I always thought it was a subconscious separation anxiety effect from my parents divorcing as a child. But thinking about it, Toy Story definitely has a part to play!! So interesting to finally know that other people have experienced this!!

See, that's where I would make a decision that may well be regarded as the "wrong" one - in the short space of time available, my connection to that one person would probably overwhelm my clinical decision-making faculties and I wouldn't push the button, thus dooming five people to die from inaction...
