"If your family are pissing you off and they're bad people, then your family are pissing you off and they're bad people." So many people fail to understand this. Blood relation means nothing if that person is toxic. Period. Parent, sibling, grandparent, sibling of parent, spouse, even child or child of sibling... it does not matter. If they are toxic, leave them out and move on. You owe them nothing.

This is so true, and I'm glad they addressed it because with things like this you know what you need to do, but sometimes you need to hear it a bunch of times, especially from people removed from the situation, before you can go through with it.

I was going through that until very recently. They would poke fun at my appearance so I told them to stop looking at me and look in the mirror and see if it does them any good. Yeah, other than legal or tax-related reasons, I don't really see the need or benefit to get married nowadays. Also, at least in the US, it can help prevent you from having to testify against your partner in a court of law, so that's a nice bonus if you like to get up to no good. And conjugal visits if the trial doesn't go your way. 😂

I saw the red flags but was scared to back out and disappoint everybody, even his friends wives said before the wedding ‘it’s not too late you know you don’t have to go through with it’ but I did anyway. Divorced 2 years later after a long time of shit. Leaving that man was the best thing I ever did and Iv never looked back.. Edit: il just add on to this nobody was disappointed or upset that we divorced, I had full support and they were all glad I was out of it. His mum, dad and sister knew what he was, his sister is probably still dealing with his shit now tbh, I cut ties with them so I don’t know. Funny thing was after I’d left I bumped into him once in my local area shopping arndale and he shouted me and said ‘oh aren’t you going to say hello?!’ I just laughed and said wow you really are mad if you think I would ever want to set eyes on you again let alone talk to you’ it was like nothing had ever happened between us on his part.. surreal

Just wanted to add my thoughts to the career discussion… careers are fluid!!!! We aren’t in our parents generation where we keep the same career for 40 years! If you’re 30, and discover you adore pottery… do it!!! Even if come 33 you hate it, move on to the next thing! You don’t need to decide on one career or define yourself based on what you do!!
@Marina_7
@Marina_7 3 жыл бұрын
I needed to hear this, thank you! My parents define _everyone_ by what they and/or their parents do. Grandparents generation also adds the husband's job to the list (ofc not the wife's though...). It's really infuriating. I get someone being educated, but you are not a school or a job etc, you are a whole person with your own thoughts, beliefs and experiences. There are looots of "educated" assholes out there, the intellectual difficulty of career obviously didn't shape their character. As long as you do your best not to have your kids suffer from hunger and stuff, do whatever you want. Whether people think it's an "acceptable"/"respectable"/etc job or education level/path is their own problem.

My therapist said that the difference with burnout is the feeling of being unable to do something that you want to do or something that will make your life a lot easier or less stressful. It’s a bit like depression, when you lose interest in stuff you enjoy. I have adhd and one of the hallmarks of adhd is when you want to do something and your brain stops you doing it, for apparently no reason (the reason is dopamine deficiency, but that’s not really easy to explain in a work email)

is it possible to feel burnt out after a significant change in your life? i.e death of a loved one. Is it possible to gain back the passion to do it?
@katemellifont4078
@katemellifont4078 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThivyaThevakumar again, according to my therapist (because I’m not qualified for anything!): clinically, grief and depression are so similar that you usually won’t be diagnosed with depression for a year after losing someone. Grief can take many forms including freezing, feeling unmotivated, or feeling angry or anxious. I lost my dad 3 years ago and I’m still not recovered from that grief - and that’s okay. Big life changes (even positive ones like getting married or moving house) can have a big impact on your mood for a lot longer than people think - at least 6 months. If you’ve been through a bit change, I really recommend talking to someone whether that’s a therapist, counsellor, friend or even just journaling or recording voice messages to yourself.
@katemellifont4078
@katemellifont4078 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThivyaThevakumar also yes, that passion will come back but it takes time and you need to take care of yourself to heal. A broken foot doesn’t heal properly if you keep walking on it; your mind and your soul can’t heal if you keep putting pressure on yourself. There is nothing wrong with being kind to yourself.

So for about two years i would not sleep for about 3-4 days a week because of school work and then having to go to work. I was so tired, I got depressed but I kept going. In fall 2020 in the last two weeks of school I broke. I couldn’t get outta bed, I couldn’t do my hw, I didn’t finish my final project, I didn’t do final exams or hw. I was completely burnt out. It was such a horrible feeling, no motivation whatsoever. I took spring semester as a break and only worked and relaxed. I picked school back up and now I’m taking it easy. I feel this so much. Spring, summer, & fall 2020 were my burnout and breakdown semesters. I was a doctoral student working on my proposal in the spring, and the editing was just going nowhere. I also teach full time, and that was the semester of all covid shut downs. By the summer, all doctoral work had stopped, and I didn't get out of bed for most of July and August. My chair reached out and I guess through the kindness and grace she showed me, I slowly started getting my personal life back together. Thankfully, I have now successfully defended my proposal for candidacy, and I'm in the midst of conducting my research study. Burnout happens, and it's okay that it does. I would have been totally fine if I had dropped out, but I'm glad for now that I didn't. I needed the freedom to stop for a while and take care of ME. At the end of the day, no goal I reach will be worthwhile if I do emotional or psychological damage to myself in the process. Congrats to the both of us for finding our way through that tunnel, and finding that we still had the will to carry on!

As a 36yr old bisexual woman who just recently started dating a woman, I just want to say that things might get weird with other people, typically ones that don't matter, but the only people that matter are your kids. Make sure that your kids are okay, and the rest will fall into place. That is not saying others will not treat you differently at first. Especially if no one saw it coming, which was my case. I don't "look gay" whatever the fuck that looks like, so people didn't believe it at first. Or they thought I was going through some things as a single mom. There were a lot of theories. However, if you truck through that weirdness there will be a turning point where people say, possibly literally out loud, "You guys are so NORMAL".... When they realize that you aren't going to change into a completely different person, they usually come around. And if they don't? Fuck em.

I LOVE THIS! ESPECIALLY with Marcus!!!! PLEASE do more with you all answering and giving advice! Your take on advice is great! I am in my 50's now, I started doing hair at 18 and have always kept my license active, BUT I have also done nails, worked as a cake decorator, a floral arranger, a Make up artist AND my final career change was to work as a case worker for family services doing food stamps and medicaid for poor families. You can DO ANYTHING that interests you!!!!! ANYTHING!!!!!

I read an article recently that proposed there is no such thing as 'lazy'; there is always a human reason why things don't happen. Being overworked, emotionally or socially drained or just overwhelmed generally. It was so liberating to read and I cried for awhile lol. Cut yourself some slack!!

I think it's important to remember that not everyone gets the opportunity for a mental health break too, even though they should. And on the flip side, some people use the mental health break as an extended way to not be productive. As someone who deals with both anxiety and depression and has for over 20 years, it is very easy to fall into a routine of no longer trying. It's a delicate balance and some people don't seek help when they need to and just think if they take some time they will be fine, but then that time turns from one week into three months into a year and they still aren't doing anything to better their state of mind.

On the mental break question - it has helped me to think about what "productivity" really means. Doing nothing isn't really "doing nothing" bc your brain is always working even when *you* aren't. If your body isn't doing anything but your brain is sorting things out, I'd argue that that is *still* "productive" even if no one else can see the results. Plus, if you can get rid of the guilt (not an easy thing), you might notice you feel more refreshed or creative after. ✌🏽❤

To the 32 year old mom who discovered she likes women- live YOUR truth. My dad was closeted afraid of what people thought and he was a sad sad angry man. Me and my brother deserved better. When he finally started living who he was, he started loving who he was and I couldn’t ask for a better dad. We’re people mad? Of course. I was the only one who kept in contact with him. Did everyone talk shit? You bet they did. But guess what else…. They got over it. Love and live who you are. You deserve it and tour kids deserve it. Much love to you. 💜💜💜

My neighbor never liked school and hated college, so she dropped out and became a hairdresser. After a few years in a little small-town salon, she went to the Plaza Hotel and dropped off her portfolio. She heard nothing back, and went back to ask for it back if they didnt like her, because shits expensive! They liked her chutzpah and asked her to style a ladys hair and they hired her on the spot. One of her clients ended up being HALLE FREAKIN BERRY. Who really liked her. When the Plaza closed, Halle (I feel like I'm on a first name basis with her bc I know her hairstylist and all) hired her and now to this day my old neighbor tours with her and travels with her and lives in a fancy Hollywood mansion! Meanwhile I have a college degree, a ton of loans, and a boring office job. Don't let your dreams be dreams, do those nails! 💅
