This time period is rich and full of story telling opportunities, but so much of history is misunderstood and many will focus in on the negative and never see the positive. History isn't black and white, and few are ever wholly good or evil. It's a whole lot of grey. An interesting story from the time that many people do not realize is that Hernan Cortez was not necessarily the aggressor in his fighting with the Aztecs. Actually, he helped unite the various tribes that have been decimated by the Aztecs in mutually beneficial alliances to conquer to Aztecs. He was just as much diplomat as a conqueror. Yet, at the same time, he took slaves. Just as an example of how not everything is all good or bad, even in this time period. (As a disclaimer, I am NOT justifying the crimes committed against the natives, I'm just stating that this time period isn't just completely awful)
@Dremons73 жыл бұрын
Google the Confederacy of Tlaxcala. They were the biggest allies to Spain during their conquest and thus gained privileged status among the other natives, keeping their culture and being respected to the point of only answering to the king himself through native ambassadors. It was clearly a matter of loyalty, would the spanish ever allow native states to exist if they were these cartoon villains everyone portrays them to be?
@ShebaFr Жыл бұрын
@@Dremons7 Spain was victim of what they themselves called "Black Legend", a negative propaganda drummed up by ALL THEIR ENEMIES at that time: England and France mostly. Its now rooted in world popular culture so deep you still feel it over the world in various portrayals of Spain of that period. (While the Aztecs gets the Noble Savage treatment)

"How can you be a peaceful Soldier?" You asked. "If you want Peace, prepare for war." I guess is the best way of explaining it. They're prepared to fight, they're ok with fighting - but if a better alternative is there - Take it. (Which in E:C they do punish you if you don't try at least to avoid fights that don't need to be fought.) At least that's what I got out of it in my own play throughs.

History is not offensive. It's just what actually happened. Don't be that kind of guy
@Revan5797 жыл бұрын
History isn't neutral, a lot of shitty stuff happened. Repeating historical conditions in video games to create a scene is one thing and many games integrate atrocities in ways that are respectful and tasteful, but I find a bit odd the desire to repeat them as such, as if being 'authentic' and 'realistic' is the absolute standard and we just have to embrace egregious moments of inhumanity. We have imaginations for a reason - to think about alternatives. For example, there were virtually no European women in the 'New World' during colonization, but this game puts them there AND gives them roles that they historically didn't have, which I think is admirable. Similarly, I think it's admirable to imagine the Spanish conquerors not needing to be racist and genocidal, or conquerors. I think that such things are healthy for people to do. Moreover, I think it's healthy to imagine native Americans as being a people with dignity and civilization instead of numerical figures staining the history of good, pious white men.
@koffieslikkersenior7 жыл бұрын
I find it despicable. You're changing history to suit your needs. The gruesome parts must not be left out because they make you uneasy. In fact, view the uneasiness as lesson. You would never see a world war 2 film portrayed as a pillow fight either, right? I know that's taking it to the extreme, but you must learn to be honest. Facts are facts and society was fundamentally different 500 years ago - in a way our modern mind cannot really comprehend. One must only look at the Ancient Greeks to see how different people thought about most things. On the one hand they were extremely liberal, tolerating homophiles and even mild forms of pedophilia, on the other hand, slavery and war were constant realities.
@Revan5797 жыл бұрын
Nobody's changing history, in fact this game doesn't pretend to be fully historical: as I said, there were no women in the Spanish military, but it's very tasteful and, because of 'realists' such as yourself, edgy to include women in historical situations where they weren't historically. That's not changing history. for one thing, if you want to find the actual history of an event, you can read a book or ask some scholars of the period. Should there be a game about 17th century trade which makes you directly assume a ship of characters responsible for transporting slaves to the new world, where you get to flog them, rape them, and throw them overboard? That's not showing 'historical reality', that's going out of your way to emphasize the nastiest shit that was ever done. And to derive enjoyment from that is utterly despicable. Emphasizing so explicitly the discourse of genocide, which this game does, borders at certain times on similar levels of distastefulness. Europa Universalis 4 simulates the slave trade abstractly, to show that it matters for historical events, but it doesn't force you to directly embody the slave-masters. This game is good precisely because it allows you to be a version of the Spanish that virtually never existed: those who may have been tolerant, peaceful, and curious of peoples other than themselves, and also perhaps not so greedy as to rob an entire continent of its wealth and destroy civilizations along with it. I don't understand why its so virtuous/authentic to simulate the 'realism' of vicious and sadistic conquerors who had no problem with themselves or with their God about slaughtering millions of people. I have no desire to do that precisely because I understand how history did in fact occur, and repeating that sort of murder and destruction in a video game, where the object is precisely that intent (to murder like the murderers and pillage like the pillagers), is not interesting to me whatsoever.
@koffieslikkersenior7 жыл бұрын
My point is just that if you base your story, film or game or whatever on history, you should get your facts straight. It might seem stupid 'because it's just a film', but people pick up on a lot of bullshit and go home thinking some things actually happend in a certain way. Some great examples would be Vikings wearing horned helmets, or unfeathered dinosaurs. Someone decided it was better to give Viking helmets unpractical horns, because they look better that way, seemingly. Same with the modern Vikings series thinking Vikings wore some sort of biker leather instead of maille. If you can work out a story within the constraints of the actual facts, like for example HBO's Rome, then you are a far better storyteller anyway. (Even that series has it's minor flaws, but I'm not one to nitpick - ahum biker leather armour again). As for women in the army, never understood that one. Even today it's not simple as a woman to be a warrior, let alone in a society that considered women to be lesser than men for some reason. There are mentions of female warriors in most cultures, but they're mostly myths and let's not forget, Jeanne d'Arc was burned at the stake. If you can work around the limitations of your time period, like I said earlier and do find a way to include a female warrior, then I commend you. Mount and Blade does this fairly well. You will be discriminated and choosing a woman, just like choosing a to be a commoner is more like a difficulty setting (or tedium setting)
@Revan5797 жыл бұрын
For one thing, a game isn't a film; differences in medium matter. There's also a difference between 'basing' or 'founding' something on history, and on the other hand structuring it to exactly resemble that history. The movie "300" is based on history, but its mythology, alien to most of us and utterly non-historical (unless of course you manage to forget that history has a perspective: perhaps the Spartans had no mythology [for themselves] and, for all intents and purposes, fought a God-king) makes the movie infinitely more varied, alive and intense. No game or movie can 'represent' what happened without adding differences that make it compelling for an audience. In fact, no medium can 'represent' history period, it can only repeat significant elements in a way that makes sense to us, and as a narrative act, will intrigue us. For example, the Spanish SPOKE IN SPANISH; where exactly is the historical accuracy there? Or does the swapping of languages not influence a 'historical' representation whatsoever? Moreover, you're embodying a perspective: what about history for the native American cannon fodder you're gunning down in the game? The Spanish perspective cannot account for how they felt about Spain invading their territory, so it's already non-historical in precisely the way that Eurocentric history is non-historical: it doesn't care about anybody who isn't European, and insofar as the historical suffering of a different ethno-religious population can be made an object of violence to simulate 'historical conditions' in a video game about imperialist conquerors, so much the better, because we can feel again the way that we already do, an implicit "fuck you" to those who 'historically' and in the representation of that history, matter less to us. Why not make a game about a slave revolt, where you play as a black population slaughtering their white conquerors? Or instead of a COD game centered around killing Russians, or a COD game centered around killing vaguely Arab men (both COD 4), you play a game about the Afghani 'insurgents' killing American soldiers? Or a game where China is fighting America, and you're playing as the Chinese? Because that's not allowed. You're playing a perspective of history, a piece of history, and not a particularly compelling one at that, since Western history prefers its own story to the others. Stop pretending that you have a historically objective panorama of all events encompassed in a game where you want to play as a white man essentially scalping brown people. Lastly, regarding women in the Spanish army, it's actually a fairly simple matter. Women might wish to play this game and NOT PLAY AS A FUCKING MAN for once. It's not hard to understand. The Spanish didn't have women in the military; they still don't, but fuck that. It's for the same reason that in Dishonored 2, you can play as either Emily or Corvo, because people like to play as someone who they can identify with sometimes, instead of always playing as the opposite gender. And also, Dishonored is based on Victorian era history, but uses technology that doesn't exist now and didn't exist then. Why? Because it makes it better: it's a new way of imagining a historical age that makes it several times more interesting and compelling. What better to add to a godless yet still moralist culture but an indifferent deity who likes to shake things up a bit to entertain himself.

+FraggingBard Old comment but I'll reply anyways: Napoleon was a genius military general that crushed the other European powers as well. Add in the fact that the Spanish was already weak to begin with and you can't really blame them. You're right at the armada part but again, they faced off against two opponents. And what are you talking about working with the Nazis? The dictatorship was a result of the civil war and Franco never wanted to join the war. Hitler was trying to appease Franco into joining his side hence the Nazis siding with the Nationalists. Not true, again. The Spanish fought the Moors, Italians, French, and Germans successfully. Ever heard of El Cid, the great fighter against muslims? Or the Tercios that were the most formindable fighting force in Europe? I mean for Christ's sake, The Spanish held *dominion* over most of Europe and half the _world_ at one point, the only people who had that kind of power were the British and French. Funny thing about that "STD" stuff, since other colonizers did the same thing, but perhaps not to the same extent. The Portuguese created the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Blame the Latin Americans for their feuds, it isn't Spain's problem now. Lol, every European hates the Romani, what makes the Spanish special? Islamic wars of conversion are nothing special since the Muslims attacked at the right time when the Byzantines and Persians were weakened, and the Visigothic king Roderic was betrayed by his own men to let the Muslims in Iberia. Prussia? Germany? The Spanish held way more land than them. Again, the Russians were fighting petty natives compared to the Europeans the Spanish fought. The Netherlands? come one dude, their empire was minuscule compared to Spain's.

lol oh so the portuguese exist now? yes the portuguese were the first to move slaves from continents to other continents as the greeks created the mediterranean slave trade, slaves were resources at the time, but the spanish were the most agressive ones by destroyed entire cultures, the portuguese were doing for commercial trades purposes the spanish did for just destruction, but then the portuguese were the first to abolish slavery how about spanish? spain even lost most of the fights agains portuguese.

Exactly where in Europe, during the 17th century, was there any semblance of democracy? Europe only had monarchies, trade republics, and theocracies, and in trade republics, only extremely wealthy, landed men from distinguished families could vote on policy. Furthermore, EVERY SINGLE colonizing power was a monarchy of some kind, so no, they did not "have democracy". As for medicine, I'm much less knowledgeable, but during that time medicine was barely ahead of the theories of Galen, a Roman physician who borrowed many of his ideas from the Greeks and their theory of the 'humors'; not exactly the enigma of medicinal innovation.
