Episode 1: Pure Racing Uncovered | The Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup | Season 2023

What happens when you put 25 riders on the exact same bike onto a racetrack together? What goes on in the minds of riders hurtling down the track at over a hundred kilometres an hour? And what keeps them coming back to the track for more?
Welcome to The Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup. Over the course of 8 races, 25 riders - 15 amateurs and 10 professional racers - speed around the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore, riding identical race-prepped versions of the iconic Royal Enfield Continental GT-R650. The Continental GT Cup is a one-make race format that goes back to the roots of motorcycle racing. Inspired by the purist racing culture of the 1960s, the bikes are devoid of any electronic rider aids to ensure that the only thing separating the winners from everyone else is pure riding skill. The Royal Enfield Continental GT Cup prides itself on being one of the most accessible motorcycle races in India. With bike racing culture on the rise, this three part episodic series hopes to help inspire biking enthusiasts to think about racing as a viable future.

Royal Enfield also run an all female series in Motoamerica, although last year was completely dominated by a single rider (Mikayla Moore). Hopefully this year will be closer. Either way I love seeing these RE bikes on the track. Another Indian manufacturer that that has a one make championship is TVS, in the ARRC. Speaking of the ARRC, if you want to see some REALLY crazy racing you should check out the underbone class at the big circuits like Sepang or Buriram, not uncommon to see packs of 10-20 riders battling the whole race.

What a fantastic concept. I would have loved a chance to try such a racing format, but it's for these young guys! I have ridden motorcycles for 17 years, but only raced on mountain bicycles. I remember the RE Continental GT from the early 1960. It was my dream bike but I only ever owned a Royal Enfield Crusader Sports. Unfortunately I came off it at top speed. It did not just slide. It tumbled. It looked a mess. Family pressure meant moving to cars.

I dont know if you have heard of the Pro am series, it was run in the 1980-1990s in UK & Europe all riders were on Bog Standard Yamaha Lc 350s it was a brilliant series. Have a look much enjoyment. 😂

RE provides the bikes, its probably cheaper for the racers. This is not MotoGP, but for a start its something.

There is no other such race being organised in India with bikes of this performance level. Edit: KTM has begun the RC cup which has up to their 390 model. That is also as slow as this bike.
