The window fasteners are similar to French ones (Cremone) I replaced the old wooden hatch on my lucarne (dormer), with a window that matches my original windows on the downstairs. A very kind man gave me some rotten windows and I managed to cobble together one good cremone, from the bits. I love it! Its nice to keep the original features. 😊

Most Bulgarians would tell you to demolish the building and build a new one, but I absolutely support renovating old houses. Especialy the fact that you will NOT replace the windows, thats a huge win! PVC can get the inside of the house mouldy and humid in winter. With the wooden frames you can kind of solve this problem as the house can "breath" through the wood. Btw, your channel is great, I admire the fact that you chose to buy a village house in BG and even restore it. One day I hope I will be able to do the same. Cheers❤

My grandma sold her parents' property in a picturesque village in the North of Serbia to an English lady for 7000 euros. She literally put it on her credit card. When she first saw the ad for the property, she thought the price was a mistake (missing a zero) as the property includes a fully furnished three bedroom, one bathroom house in good repair, a wine cellar (my great grandfather used to make wine) an annex including a room and indoor and outdoor kitchens, a brick shed, also a huge two storey barn, stables, pigsties, a large chicken coop, outdoor loo, etc. Massive plot of land with a front garden, back yard with animal enclosure, a big vegetable garden, an orchard with over fifty different fruit trees and a small vineyard. She did not have to do any work, she just moved in. This was almost ten years ago and the property prices have gone up since, but the old village houses and farms in that region are still dirt cheep.

Some info on your Hoover as translated by native Russian: Funny enough, the Hoover name is "Rocket". Top left writing on box says Hoover. Right Bottom says: Dnepropetrovsk Plant named after the 50th anniversary of the USSR. The model is 7M2. The writing top right is the State Union Standard, basically a ISO type number for quality purpose. Great find... Hope it still works or you can get it working. They don't build them like that no more....

To pull the ceiling down it took about 3 hours with 2 of us for 1 room. To board it back up you're looking at about a days work with 2 of you for 2 room. I did by myself, so it took me a couple of days. As for the roof, for our specific issues and bearing in mind it was a "patch up" job, it took about 3 to 4 days. Hope this helps 😀 (bare in mind everyone's houses will be different) but hope that gives you a rough idea.

Hi Guys, I'm still catching up with your story. Your enthusiasm is really contagious and inspiring. Our house was partially renovated when we I arrived so the task was less daunting. Nevertheless, the journey has been long. Sadly, our windows had already been replaced, warmer for winter but not nearly so pretty. Everyday we give thanks that we did it, our life us 100% better than it was in the UK. I think yours will be too. So many people have dreams that are never fulfilled. Take care and enjoy. By the way. Have you thought of burying a time capsule somewhere on the property. I jsve it in my head, just haven't got round to it yet.
@frombournemouthtobulgaria Жыл бұрын
We're hoping we can keep the windows somehow, but not sure how it would work as we want to install new windows in other locations of the property. hi, looking the the depth of those windows, you will never ever bee abel to fit double glasing in those :(
@frombournemouthtobulgaria Жыл бұрын
It's such a shame isn't it. We're now considering PVCs because the winter was so harsh. You can get new wooden ones made with double glazing but the cost is really too expensive.

@@frombournemouthtobulgaria , yes that is a shame :(

I took out my old windows, they were to far gone, but the wooden frame was ok and I used that to attach new double glazing to it. It's worked out fine...
@frombournemouthtobulgaria Жыл бұрын
@@gw6056 ooooooooo interesting...... how much depth did you need to install new double glazing, and did you just use silicone to put them on place.
@gw6056 Жыл бұрын
@@frombournemouthtobulgaria the double glazing I got was about 7 cm wide all around, I had 9 cm available wood width. So I told them to pull them in to the inside edge. They screwed them in 3 screws per side....I was there and made sure fix was strong. Because the original wood frames were seasoned and within a millimetre straight....it was a very snug fit indeed (a little sanding required but minor) no need for expanding foam because the gap was miniscule I had to use sealant...

Had friends over a couple of times to help with some bigger renovation things like the roofs and building a coop for the chickens. Extra hands go a long way!

Did you put liner under the tiles?
@frombournemouthtobulgaria Жыл бұрын
Temporary fix mate. Just reshuffled them, strained everything out, concrete where needed until we can afford to do it all properly with felt and wooden battons. Which hopefully, won't be too long.

Hi how much did u end up paying for a handyman if u can say it here? Thinking of getting property in bulgaria soon.
@frombournemouthtobulgaria Жыл бұрын
We paid him 50 leva a day for labour 🙂. Which is going rate. Some days 60 or 70 if he Worked particularly hard on difficult jobs.
@alz64101 Жыл бұрын
Just because it's the going rate, doesnt mean you couldn't be different from the norm, £20 for a full days work is mean.

Hi how much is the rough cost of putting a septic tank in

I am so glad we have found your channel ! We have watched the first 10 of your videos in one go. You are amazing at learning these new skills (well done for the electrics) and your both so positive. How much money did you have saved to move there ? We have a house in Bulgaria and are hoping to move there next year
@frombournemouthtobulgaria Жыл бұрын
Hey! Thank you so much for following us and joining our journey, we appreciate it. When we moved over we only had about 8 to 9 grand of savings, so really not much at all when you consider the cost of living too along with renovations, that's why we do everything our selves. Good luck with your move over!

Wouldn't it been cheaper to buy a land and build from scratch?

Probably not in this case no 😊.

Steve, feel free to watch something else 🤣 You ain't gotta sit there. 1 in 4 trillion chance that you were going to be born, don't waste your time 1) watching something you don't like and 2) commenting consistently negative comments to make yourself feel good. 😉

Have you not got anyone to ask for advice before you undertake any tasks that you don't know anything about, like a builder or groundworker etc?
@frombournemouthtobulgaria Жыл бұрын
Yes we do have a few people, and we have asked them. One of my friends Advised me how to rewire the whole house, and we got it done! So we do have proffesional advice from many people who can help.

Ok that's good then, i was going to say i am a groundworker and general builder and handy with most aspects of work including electrical plumbing etc so if you need pointing in the right direction please feel free to get in touch. When you was backfilling your hole for your septic tank i was like this isn't going to work not compacting in lairs, it was a shame to see it sink after all your hard work! Only just came across your channel but enjoying the content. Best of wishes with it all and keep it coming 🙂
