I never did good in high school. Graduated 6 months late with a 1.9 gpa. Girlfriend pregnant at 18. Flunked out of community college after 1.5 years. Stocked beer for 3 years after that. Electrician for 9 years saved my money as the pay increased and started buying rental houses. Retired at 38 years old a milionaire 20 rental houses later. Building my dream house of 6,000 sq feet on 10 acres May 2019. My experience with rental houses and building all came from the hard work and training that came from being an electrician. Still own all the houses and is my main source of income since 2010. Haven't even done a side job since then. FOCUS ON PASSIVE INCOME! LEARN WHAT IT IS! Hard work, good money management, staying positive, staying true to the people who are by your side. I married that pregnant girl by the way. That baby is 22 years old now!

@@Sparky578 Good for you bro, the nice thing is once you learn the trade you can start doing side work on the weekends. Then you can make some real money. Word of mouth gets around and you’ll stay busy. I’ve driven a company vehicle since 1998, so one it’s free gas to work and back everyday and no maintenance costs to your vehicle. Between wearing a company shirt and the company truck with an “electric” on the side of it you get tons of people asking if you do side work even when your pumping gas (happens a lot). And now that I’m older (60) I don’t do side work and just take their number and give it to one of the young guys at work that I know do. The company’s I worked for were commercial and industrial so I was never taking money away from my employer by doing so. Best of luck young man and as for school I quit half way through 12th grade. I had a stepfather that I couldn’t stand and chose to move out on my own to get away from him. The only good thing that came from my mom’s passing a few years ago is that. I never have to see him again. 👍 Oh and be careful, always access every situation for “what could go wrong and how could I get hurt?” Stay safe😉

I see a huge shortage of skilled craftsmen coming in the next decade (or less). I've been an independent contractor for about 5 years and at 42 yrs old I cannot remember the last time I came across an electrician younger than me. These old guys are retiring and dying, not enough people replacing them. It's not the most glamorous job but a guy with a master's license, a fully outfitted van, and a helper can reasonably clear 6 digits yearly. And it beats the hell out of warming some chair in an office all day. 💪😲

Working on starting my own company in 3 more years. Getting paid well, kids are fed, wife is happy, and I am happy. My degree I had prior isn't worth near what my license is to me or anyone else. Best profession I have ever been in. Yes, it's been hard work, yes, it is nasty at times. But, man! It pays off! I love this field! I'd recommend this career to anyone with a good work ethic and a will to work and learn. I know alot of electricians don't like residential. But, I do. I plan to start my own residential/commercial service company. I've been doing commercial construction for two years and residential construction for 1 year prior. As a female, I love being an electrician. Went to college cause high school taught me that I’d be a failure without a degree. My, how wrong they are. I went to a trade school that has a 20 week program with hands on work everyday. Just applied to my local union, just waiting for that test and interview.

I’m a senior and deciding between med school and being and electrician but I’m starting to realize that college is a waste of money

Licensed journeymen and masters in the midwest could reasonably expect 45k-60k per year working for somebody else. Really depends on your area. Get a contractors license, work for yourself and six figures is absolutely achievable.
@hellskullz6 жыл бұрын
From what I've seen most journeyman make between $41k-$70k in the northwest as a ballpark range. However it's important to keep in mind that is if you work NO overtime. With overtime you can easily make close to 6 figures if not 6 figures itself. And most college degrees lead to salary base jobs which makes you work overtime anyways and you don't earn any extra.

@cantgetright7426 жыл бұрын
I believe in both trade and college. I can't knock the books. It's junk for work but is wealth for knowledge. I studied business, accounting, and finance. I can't begin to praise how useful some of the knowledge is in every day life. I've ever wanted to be 3 things in my life. A pilot, an electrician, and a business man. I'm not really second guessing my prior education. Being an electrician greatly complements all of that. But, what exactly do I do first. What do I need to know to be an apprentice? My electrical know how to date is minimal. I did some in high school and have done basic things like changing light fixtures and replacing outlets. Do I just find a real electrician looking for a know nothing, so to speak? Or do I have to invest more into a classroom to get practical experience? I've always dreamt of building my own house and being an electrician would probably be pretty useful. I'm in Tennessee if that helps.

This rant was great and I couldn't agree with you more, Dustin!! I have two degrees and had many jobs over the years - most of which were dead-end. After wanting some direction and consistency, I became a middle school teacher and taught for 7.5 years. I'd hear people who only ever worked in education say things such as, "We really don't know what the future looks like for kids." My question to them was, "How can we have a deficit in skilled tradespeople and not prepare kids for this?" I'd reached my limit with working in a bubble and at age 40, I began an apprenticeship as an electrician. I make less than half what I made as a teacher but I'm happy with my life because I now enjoy what I do! I had my insecurities about starting late in life, but I'm over that now because I'm so focused on learning and progressing. If you have a degree and feel lost, don't feel you must resort to a desk job or go into teaching. Electricity is amazingly diverse and super interesting. I'd also like to add that lots of jobs requiring degrees come with titles and set responsibilities. Take teaching for example. Whether you're on the job for a day or 30 years, all teachers are equal because so much of what they do is based on their qualifications. The beauty of apprenticing and starting at the bottom is how you gradually gain responsibilities while working towards your end goal. Even during the bad days when I feel like a failure, I learn something that gets me one step closer to where I'm going. This was the best career decision I ever made and my only regret is not doing this sooner. Thanks again for your amazing videos, Dustin!

Great video. Every single sentence you said is 100% truth! I stumbled into being an electrician after I got my business degree, but after doing it 9 years, I'm so glad I did. Teaching new guys that want to learn is really rewarding. And you're right about being the next millionaires. In about 15 years, we're going to be so short on electricians, we'll be charging more than doctors and lawyers. Already, I could work 24 hours a day if I wanted. Anyone I meet, as soon as they find out I'm an electrician, they tell me they need work done. I often hear from people they will do plumbing, carpentry, painting, etc, but won't dare touch electrical. That means tons of work for us.

I'm an ex con finding work was next to impossible. Went to college and used college to get a job in the trade so worked while going to school. Definitely inspiring man. Thanks for your thoughts. I'm 37 now. I worked flight-line avionics in the AF out of HS. I did 4 yrs and got out. Went back to school to learn computers and pretty much been in IT since. I got my Airframe and Power plant licenses but never went back into the aircraft field. Even went back to college for a while but thought taking out more loans is just foolish. So here I am, hating the cubicle life. I've applied to the local IBEW JATC here in San Antonio. I'll be taking a pay cut, my wife isn't too happy, but I know it'll benefit and stabilize us in the end. I miss working with my hands and mind. Just thought I'd share my journey for the youngsters. Don't give up and never let anyone tell you, you can't do something. Follow your heart and the money will come.
