I am an electrical contractor. It’s simple. Show up ten minutes early every day. Do every job to your best ability Do it without whining Show up every day, regardless of your girlfriend, your car, whatever. Pay attention and learn.
@claytonatkins60585 жыл бұрын
I agree, minus the car part. Sometimes Murphy’s law kicks in and just decides you need a blown tire halfway to work so now your inevitably late. Sometimes it decides you don’t REALLY need that battery to turn the engine over when it’s 10degrees out. All I’m saying is some guys just don’t seem to understand that not everyone has a backup car and not everyone seems to understand that shit happens. Have a good one buddy!
@dirigoelectric5 жыл бұрын
Clayton Atkins you’re right, at least in part. When I was an apprentice, I was always 15 minutes early. One day, my truck broke down. Everyone waited for me before they left for the long ride to jobsite. Why? Because they knew if I was late, there was a reason. Period. If you’re always early, people see it. If you’re always pulling in with screeching tires at 1 minute til, they know that too. If you want to excel, follow my advice. I’ve been doing this for over 30 years. I’ve seen thousands of guys. Simple rules to follow. If a guy is always late, and always has excuses, he’s a douchebag, and everyone knows it.

Being a female in a predominantly all-male trade won't be easy but I am one of the most hard-working people you'll ever meet, and I love to soak up knowledge and ask questions. I want to be great at the craft, not just mediocre, because I truly love electrical theory as well as all the physical part even though there's a lot I haven't done yet. Also Klein is an awesome! I asked my instructor what tools I should get as a beginner, he said anything by Klein is great.. so I bought an apprentice set of electrical tools(wire strippers, diagonal cutters, screwdrivers, etc etc) that has basically everything minus the drill. My instructor was impressed by the tool set I bought from Klein, and has repeatedly asked to look at them or use them lol

I really enjoyed when I was in the ibew. Unfortunately I had to get out. I wish the union would do a little more for the guys who aren't 18 living at home with mom and pop when they first get in. I already had a fiance and a 3 year old at home. CW1 wage wasnt even quite 15 an hour. And when you have big boy Bill's you just dont bring home enough. Especially when you're commuting 45 min one way and there is no free parking on the job so you're paying to be on a ramp. I wish things would've worked out different. Cheers to all the guys who followed through and are pulling that cash. 🤘💪

Seeing this 4yrs after you posted it. I'm an apprentice, I've got basic knowledge and switched trades about 4-5 months ago. 100% agree on the learn to anticipate what your Journeyman is going to need. I think that was what got me really in, I was given a temporary position and there was several times when the Journeyman, up his ladder would be saying "I need a......" as he looked down and saw me holding up just what he was about to ask for. That has also been the advice I've given new apprentices, not only does it make them more useful at that moment it shows they are ready for more responsibilities, I don't recall any that didn't that made it.
