Episode 114. Yasen-M. Hunter of the deep

The new hero of Combat Approved is the fourth-generation nuclear-powered submarine Kazan of the Yasen-M project. This submarine has just been launched, but western experts have already called it the most dangerous one in the entire Russian navy and one of the most armed in the world. There is no other submarine in the world with such a spectrum of the newest weapons: these are supersonic rockets Oniks, self-guided torpedoes, smart mines, and the newest system of radio-electronic warfare. Besides, the Kazan is the first submarine in the Russian navy built not of two hulls (internal and external) as it used to be but of one hull. What does it provide for? This is what Combat Approve will find out. The film crew of the program will be the first who have been allowed on the secret production of the Yasen. The journalists will visit the production of precision weapons and the cruiser itself, will tell what welding explosion is, will show the first open test of a new torpedo and, finally, show rare footage of almost exquisite operation of launching the submarine.

It does'nt really impact safety at all since the inside of the outer hull is flooded in double hulled submarines and the energy of any explosion on the outer hull would transfer most of it's energy to the inner hull anyway. A double hull is generaly more streamlined than single hulls but are more expensive to produce.

It's nice to see Russia finally adapt the more efficient American design of a single hull. Too bad they missed out on using a pump jet instead of a propeller. It could have been a lot quieter. I still think that with pumpjet and proper technology refresh, 954 and 971 project would still be viable designs, especially in current louder oceans with significantly high background noise. Russian subs have been know to get louder in 6-18 months of comission. If this was tackled..... also, double hull for all complexities offers reserve buoyoancy in excess....
