In Mexico, golden crispy churros are served with a cup of nourishing, frothy hot chocolate, and there’s perhaps no better snack in the whole republic. In this episode, Rick visits El Moro, a Mexico City institution, and then orders fistful of churros rellenos - that’s right, stuffed churros - in picturesque Coyoacán. Back in Chicago, Rick’s recipe begins with classic Mexican hot chocolate and ends with churro nibbles showered atop Mexican hot chocolate ice cream.

In the Yucatan Peninsula, the chocolate is also prepared with water. I remember my two grandmothers going to the Molino to grind the chocolate with spices and almonds to make the “tablillas de chocolate” used to make us our chocolate for breakfast or supper

First off.. That ice cream looks divine! Yumm! Secondly I went to El Moro 5 years ago with my family, I wanted my abuelito to try them since you had been there before and other influencers and I did not like it at all. The service was horrendous, they didn’t have most of the items on the menu and the hot chocolate was ok lacked flavor. The churros itself were a little dry for my taste. We stopped by the stand outside next door that had Al pastor tortas, that was THE worst place ever. They were rude as heck and the tortas only were a bolillo with barely any meat. I went to Coyoacan this Christmas and had Jordan churros, omg so delicious 🤤 we had khalua, cajeta, Nutella, baileys stuffed churros. The only complaint is that they are very small.

There is cool mythology behind chocolate, the warm chocolate drink was only for the tlatoani and the royal family, it was associated with everyone’s favorite mesoamerican god, Quetzalcoatl/Kukulkan as the one who gave the people the cacao beans, and it was mixed with chilies, water and cacao powder

I'll have to look up what Spanish churros look like, but it sounds like how they make them in Tamaulipas. ---just looked it up, no, in Mante Tamaulipas they are more swollen looking, can't really see that it had a star shape. They are much bigger and have air bubbles inside them. I found a video and have it set at the time they start showing the churros. They also don't put cinnamon, which always dismayed me. But I got used to them, they're good on a cold day. Here's the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnyXpX9qaM2roNE

I enjoyed most of your video, but towards the end in regard to the churros, It was like reinventing the wheel, churros are long, and You don’t sprinkle them with sugar you put them under the sugar and put the sugar on top. As for those tiny bites I don’t know it’s not traditional I’ve never seen them before in Mexican states anywhere. I think you should have left them in the oil longer so they can be crispy and be well cooked on the inside

Mexico has become a very dangerous place to visit. We got lost, and wound up in the poorest neighborhood I’ve ever seen anywhere - just hovels made of scrap material, dirt floors, makeshift doors, and no utilities. I felt only my guardian angel got me out of there unscathed.

@@51rwyatt 1% of Mexicans own 46% of the nation’s wealth. The top 10% of Mexicans own over 78% of the nation’s wealth. So there exists an enormous wealth inequality, with an accompanying marked degree of poverty. In Mexico City one sees scads of homeless children. The rich must live in gated neighborhood communities with armed guards and surrounded by a razor wire perimeter fencing or concrete walls with shards of broken glass embedded.
