Lt. Col Grossman began his career in the Army as a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division, then as a platoon leader in the 9th Infantry Division, a general staff officer, a company commander in the 7th (Light) Infantry Division as well as a paratrooper and graduate of Ranger School. He went on to become a professor of psychology at West Point. In February 1998, Grossman retired from the military as a professor of military science at Arkansas State University.
He is the author of "On Killing," an analysis of the psychological processes involved with killing another human being, and "On Combat," an extension of his first book intended to provide coping strategies for dealing with the physiological and psychological effects of violence for people forced to kill in their line of work.
Since his retirement from the US Army, he has been on the road almost 300 days a year, for over 19 years, as one of our nation’s leading trainers for military, law enforcement, mental health providers, and school safety organizations.
Today Col. Grossman is the director of the Killology Research Group (www.killology.com). In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks he has written and spoken extensively on the terrorist threat, with articles published in the Harvard Journal of Law and Civil Policy and many leading law enforcement journals, and he has been inducted as a "Life Diplomate" by the American Board for Certification in Homeland Security, and a "Life Member" of the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute.

speaking of PTSD, my great uncle was a WW2 combat vet, saw a good amount of action in France, Belgium, and Germany. He told me that when he got back, he was stressed out, irritable and all that stuff. He also said it took him about a year to decompress, and get past it. He also told me that a big reason for his relatively quick readjustment was his parents. They sat him down and told him that they saved all his pay, we got a room here for you, we don't want you to worry about finding a job right away, we just want you to relax. Take as much time as you need, travel, stay home, do whatever you like, just stay out of trouble. His parents, being Russian immigrants and having seen dark times were no stranger to human hardship. He said, after a year of not doing much of anything, he took a vacation in Mexico, came back after a month and decided to get on with life. He died in his sleep about 8 years ago. He was one hell of a role model for fathers and grandfathers. Awesome dude. My father, grandfather, and I have tremendous respect for him.

I think there’s more pressure on kids to do everything. There’s higher expectations for young kids, less physical activity during the school day, more academic testing, join a club, take a leadership position, hold a job, volunteer, if you want to join a sport and play on the team during the season, you need to join a private gym and a club team during the off season...it’s at a point where they have to choose academics or sports. I know kids that don’t have ADD but take Adderral so they can stay up until 3:00am to finish a school project. Some kids don’t have a loving, supportive family or even a home to go to. All that stress and they don’t have the tools to deal with it. Many adults don’t have the tools to deal with stress in a healthy manner. Hence why many binge watch Netflix, drink, do drugs etc. They need tools to manage their stress and an outlet for their anger and anxiety. That’s just a few more things to consider when we ask ,”Why is this happening?” My two cents.

As a police officer since 1999, MANY assaults whether aggravated with weapons or not never get reported at all! The only thing keeping major crimes down is the fear of real criminals that citizens or cops will use whatever force necessary to stop it. (Weapons) It is just an opinion from a street cop...I work in N.C. Keep up the great podcast!

John D good view. I don’t have quite as many years as you (just into 12 years). I have worked in two states in variety of capacities from street to narcs to violent crimes detective and back to the street and have seen laws change. The definition of “agg assault” from state to state is different along with the severity. I wonder what he defines as agg assault? In Iowa it is a misdemeanor with caveats for enhancements to felony. In Illinois it is felony anyway you slice it. It also has drastically different definitions of what meets the agg assault guidelines. I have seen willful injury change to an agg assault defined with certain injuries as well (cracked orbital being lowered as example). Just throwing the term “agg assault” leaves me to wonder what the defined goal is he looking at. Just a thought, great man and I aline with several of his theories but as I get older I push back from some. Stay safe

You think video games are bad? Just wait until you hear about this new "rock and roll" music the kids are listening to these days, it's the source of all our problems. Seriously though, this guy has a lot of interesting things to talk about, but I assure you that 99.99% of video game playing adults can pull themselves away from the screen in time to avoid shitting their pants. I feel like he's trying to scapegoat all of his personal pet peeves as the source of all modern life problems, but most of what he talks about are symptoms rather than causes. Excessive video game playing, alcohol abuse, and opioid abuse aren't the source of life problems, they are what people do to avoid their life problems.

Actually he cites several studies and examples to back up his position. He has a degree in psychology also. I don’t know what background you have to support your comment. It is well known, movies, television, culture changes affect violence. Since you mention Rock and Roll as an example of having no influence, I point out that no young people wanted to take the polio vaccine. Elvis Presley took his vaccination publicly just prior to appearing on Ed Sullivan. Youth vaccination rose from five percent, to eighty. That is an example of influence and music. It was a positive influence, but demonstrates influence is present. If you have case studies to counter the influence of media and video games, bring them up.

The world is a decidedly better place because of the Lt. Col. That said, I am glad that you pushed back on some of his inconsistent and in-congruent positions. How the Lt. Col. does not see that there is a logical problem with advocating self-reliance (Second Amendment issues) and the "Nanny State" (government control over the video game industry) is disappointing.

(and could not smoke in the pod) Then the Air Force decided they didn't a AFI in every drone pod, and axed a s-load of the AFI drone operators, in favor for 1 AFI overseeing multiple pods of "vanilla" airmen Given the standards of mental prowess to get into Air Force Intelligence, they (read AFI) were better armored against PTSD. As I listened, I kept thinking, "It sounds like the Lt. Col. is conflating correlation and causation." Just as I am about to write this comment, Mr Stumpf (finally) says what I've been thinking. One of the segments in the documentary (film), Freakonomics: in the 1990s, correlation between "new" law enforcement tactics and crime reduction obscures the ACTUAL causation. Legalized abortion reduced the number of unwanted childbirths in the 1970s, reducing the (likely) pool of NEW criminals in the 1990s (i.e. many of the next generation of criminals... as well as some victims... were never born). When humans colonize Mars, Lt. Col. Grossman will say, "There's a population EXPLOSION on Mars! I've got the data. Look at the percentage change since 2020. The percentage is a number greater than the number of atoms in the UNIVERSE! It's approaching INFINITY!" :-)

Do you not see the irony of following up the correlation does not mean causation cliche with a claim from a film that says legalization of baby murder LiKeLy led to less criminals being born and therefore less crime? Even if the propaganda were true (which it isn't), the ends (reduction in crime) do not justify the means (murdering babies because they might turn out to be potential criminals down the line). In fact, you'd just be creating more heinous criminals (baby murderers and those complicit) and hiding it under the rug through language manipulation (lies). Crime hasn't decreased, communities aren't safer now than they were when everyone knew their neighbors and kept their front doors open without lock. Even after 66 million+ lives were taken through the grandiose solution of legalizing baby murder.

@@NaruIchiLuffy - _Baby murderers???_ Well... I guess if a baby commits murder, the State of Texas will be _the first_ to sentence it to death. After all... competence to stand trial _begins at conception._ If abortion is murder, then miscarriages should require a medical examiner and a police investigation. What was _the cause of death?_ Was it _wrongful?_ Was it an abortion _disguised as a miscarriage?_ Or, even, was it _self-inflicted?_ We need those investigations. Andy, you exercised an extraordinary degree of patience which also highlights the respect you showed as a guest in his home though he was a guest on your podcast, That said, GOD DAMN. This man knows better, or should. Hell, he must have felt the need to promote all his books he has written and the presidents he has briefed, but that tells me he has rarely been challenged on any of these "serious problems" and his ability to identify both problem and solution. It's obvious he hasn't been put in the any situation where people have questioned him. But the murder rate bull crap he tried to identify does not reflect our country in a dire situation. And apparently the rest of our problems are due to sleep deprivation. It was just sad to see him focus on these issues that he claimed the data shows, but no one has ewve heard of except himI applaud you brother. He was unable to address anything I experienced in 6 tours in Iraq but I am glad you respectfully challenged his intentionally spreading viruses theory and his effort to paint our future in a dreadful light. Not to knock Lt. Col too much (I think his point about murders going down through medical intervention is really good. Something I certainly hadn't thought of before.)but, there are also 160 million more people in the country since 1970. This could also account for a significant increase in violent acts simply by having more people to potentially commit a violent act.

There are a whole lot of comments here saying a lot of shit about Dave Grossman. I've read almost every book he's written and a few of them multiple times. I've heard him speak several times as well. Anybody saying he doesn't know what he's talking about or that he's fear-mongering hasn't had their eyes opened to the real world and what humans really are. "The genius always looks like a lunatic from the eyes of the fool."

@@arighteousname5882 There are also huge numbers of people who have killed people in combat who agree with grossman. He's been a soldier and he's a scientist now, not a prophet. Science is a jagged guide not a flawless manual. Produce the data to counter his and we'll talk about the validity of your material. Until then, it doesn't much matter what you're saying. One might also accurately say that if you agree with the "majority" you would be wise to rethink your stance on more things than not.

@Erik Haraldsson his Stats used in is book are very skewd and or vague at best. Alot of the data he's collected for his book is also anecdotal hence why he's getting challenged by Andy. Alot of what's in his books reads like some chessey Soldier of fortune magazine. Many vets who have been in combat are critical of his books. That's my data sir.

@Erik Haraldsson yeah that's what I thought. This podcast just proved it to be one of many reasons why Grossman is somewhat of a crack pot when it comes to writing about killing and combat. He may be a "scientist" on paper but he is not even a "researcher" in the academic sense whatsoever .

Other than his own books, I don't recall hearing the colonel giving more than one or two vague sources for his data. You got the goods, share them so interested people can look it up. The sources and purposes of the studies are important, and I would like to look into this further.

Andy, absolutely love your podcast, and love every podcast you've been on. I was really disappointed to see Lt. Col Grossman on here, the very definition of "logical fallacy" in all varieties. I have had to deal with his video game blaming rhetoric for 20 years now, while the real issues causing bullying and violence in youth; are overlooked for hysteria and spectacle. Good job on holding the line, but hopefully you can avoid such individuals in the future.

Interesting perspective and I appreciate you not making your podcast an echo chamber by bringing in other views that may not align with the circles you normally run in. I do wonder akin to his argument on medical technology suppressing the "actual murder rate" if we would have as many violent acts with people understanding that those acts would/could have a more severe consequence. So to flip it has medical technology increased our propensity to violence because we "assume" the victim can just go to the doctor and get sorted out, no big deal.

The stress of a super bowl seems very different to me then to be fighting for ones own very life. I’m curious in what people have to say about this. Not to be a comment of hate or of bashing, merely curiosity.

I'm like 5 mins in and this guy said the stress of playing a sport (making millions) is equal to the stress of combat. I've never been to combat but I've played plenty of sports (and at the time the most important games of my life)... I'd venture to guess that the butterflies before the game started (the ones that go away and it turns into excitement, laughs and smiles) are NOT the same as if I were going into combat. Just a guess. That statement was laughable.
