I love RGB modifying TVs. Note that all TVs and jungle chips are not the same. It is best to look up or measure the peek to peek voltage inputs. The can vary greatly and I tind that not mant can easily use 75ohm resistors. So you often need different voltage divider resistors. This includes the blanking signal. Some older TVs don't have jungle chips or don't have ones with RGB inputs. You can still RGB modify them but you have to do some signal manipulation with opamps before the signals go to the neck board transistors.
@The_SegaHolic
@The_SegaHolic 3 жыл бұрын
Look, I used a voltage divider here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJnLqaONlKerqs0 But I get what you are saying. What I really need is an o-scope so I can measure p-p voltage on the various siignals so as not to guess. But that's $300-500 for a meager digital one. So I have to go with my eyes and if it's in the ball park, its good. Also, it's impossible to find the datasheets for many of the chroma/jungle so you can read just what p-p volaget the RGB inputs need. Does it need .7v p-p. Does it need 1v p-p. etc. But usually, these analog RGB inputs use either of these standard voltages. But lets keep this fun...

@The_SegaHolic 3 жыл бұрын
Nice. I thought most modern IC’a incorporate some sort of esd protection in the package? Did u measure P-P voltage after amping the signals? Most chroma/jungles want that .7p-p voltage. 75 ohm termination is in the project box (aviation to JP21) so I don’t have to keep installing and using them.

@@The_SegaHolic many jungles take .7 VPP but many take .5 (generally JVC and Toshiba are .5 vpp). Yeah most jungles have ESD to some degree, but if it fails it's probably the hardest part to source for many TVs, generally for something that's got physical contact with the user you want some sort of additional protection. The boards are something like 5cm by 3cm So they can be mounted in very small places, and because all components are SMD the profile is very slim as well. I'm testing the second iteration now and if I'm fine with everything the source files are going up on my GitHub, they're less than $5 in parts when it's all said and done.

You can use whatever connector type you want to use for prototyping or your final design. THINK about it, once you know what signals go to what pin... you can use any type of connector that has the proper amound of pins. It does not matter. Yes, disconnect your blanking line and test with a DMM. One probe to the blanking line, and the other to ground. Seriously consider someone with basic electronic skills helping you out in person. A person with some electronics experience would already know this as this is basic stuff. This type of work is not recommended for people with little electronics experience as you can get hurt. Good luck.

Some more information. The modification was super easy as there was an unoccupied header on the main board with pins for RGB and sync ready to go. I ran it all to a scart socket. Here's a view of the back and inside, ugly I know but it does the trick. Only had to add 0.1uf caps to the RGB lines and 75ohm resistors on the RGB grounds. Also needed to run 1v to 3v to the blanking pin Ys (usually pin 16 on scart and jp21) but all my cables had nothing even going to this pin so I just put a resistor after the av control pin (usually 5v) to get it down to 3v and ran that to the Ys input. This is what that guy is saying. On the same tv I have. He had to do this for the blanking pin. Do you know what he means?

From the console side, use ground coming from the AV port. From the TV, use ground that is on the AV jacks. You can use your DMM to find other points to find common ground with the AV jacks if you wish.

@@Slammer661 My cables are custom JP21 connectors which is the Japanese version for scart and wired differently. Those ground pins actually should all be connected together, so it doesn't matter what you use. Sometimes, some cable makers won't even put ground to all those points. Look at the console end of your connector. It should only have one ground pin. Use your DMM in continuity mode to see what Pins that you mention is connected to the ground pin on the other side of your cable that connects to your console. The ones that beeps, you can choose any one, it doesn't matter.

Absolutely beautiful video my friend. A lot of people will find this useful. Question - in your opinion, if you already have component, is an RGB mod necessary?
@The_SegaHolic
@The_SegaHolic 3 жыл бұрын
I have modded a JVC and another Toshiba that has component. The RGB picture is as pure color wise as your TV will provide. Check out the Pinned comment from the Toshiba video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aobPXoOgdtGsaM0 I asked him to comment on what he thought of the RGB mod he successfully performed. RGB and component are two distinct color spaces. You should try the mod to scratch that itch to find out if it really is necessary. Do the mod, it's pretty easy. Also, yes, IMO, the RGB picture looks better as you don't need to do much color correction. The only correction that you really can do to an RGB picture is color temperature. But out of the box, once you see the RGB picture, you'll see a difference in color than what you are used to seeing with the TV.

@@jazza5564 LOL. Legend? Far from it. You're taking this like it's hard or something. This is not brain surgery! Easy peasy! Yeah, I keep getting asked about muxing. I'll have to give it a go. I just answered a comment to someone suggesting muxing as he didn't want to use a physical switch. But it's so hard to find RGBable TV's at all nowadays. I was actually looking at the whole muxing thing a before I did my first mod. And I think I'm confortable enough with CRTs now that I can experiment further. Again, I just wish I had a real junker of a TV that I wouldn't feel bad breaking it doing experiments. LOL. But definitely in the pipeline.

Glad you're motivated. And you've motivated me. BTW, I was looking at the MUX method, and some stuff don't sit well with me. Like the asssumption that all Micon's RGB output voltage is 5v according to the spreadsheet: drive.google.com/file/d/1CXRu4BsuTcu5GyhIaJfwoxm_sPRsFuHE/view And it requires more removal of components. first of all, thanks, you explain this way much better that in the shmups forums. That being said i have to ask, how come you dont add a switch on the 5v line or did i miss a part on your video? and how come you dont add resistors to change the value in the mod, as in the mux mix mod? Thanks for keeping this alive. keep the good work
@The_SegaHolic

You can take a look at this video, a mod for the Princess TV, which is essentially the same as this mod to clarify things a bit more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ7FY6GodtmXfsU Or my D-Series mod which explains wiring the switch in extreme detail: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4qqqmZ8qqarnKM I time stamped it so you can watch the switch wire up and install, which I dld link in this video. The switch switches the RGB singals between the micon/chroma and the console/chroma, including the sourced 5v and the micon's blanking pn to the chroma. The D-Series vid really explains it all. Change of resistors, or extra resistors really isn't needed for this "old school" method. The MUX method requres it as you're "multiplexing" the RGB lines of both the Micon and your console.
