I'm glad Matt defended "Guilty Pleasures," which I love. It's not the work of art that "The Movie Album" is, but its melodies are pretty and Barbra sounds so relaxed! It's nice to hear.

Another FUN video! I like the way Matt described The Movie Album as being elegant. "Wild Is The Wind" is one her very best recordings in my opinion, though I truly adore "More In Love With You". There are so many "shades" of Barbra on that album. The 2000's will be the decades people and critics will look back on as the hidden gems of her musicality.

These were the albums where She did her overly romantic whispery singing and Undersold Her artistic style deliveries (to hear Barbra sing "You're Gonna Hear Me" IN HER PRIME). But there were some good points, especially "Night Of My Life" and some selections from her Live Concert album.

Great episode. I like Guilty Pleasures, but wish she would have just done the Gibb songbook. Most of the new Gibb songs were not great songs. If she had instead mined the Gibb catalog for the gems, it would have been much better. I adore her version of Don’t throw it all away. I also wish she had done a series of songbook albums of the music of her generation. Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, so many great composers. Lots of missed opportunities. As for the Movie Album, it just wasn’t what people expected or wanted. It was a huge missed opportunity and should have been an easy number 1 and huge seller, but the material sank it. This could have been a series as well. I’m not a huge fan of Love is the Answer, but agree it should have won a Grammy and love it went to Number 1. I totally agree Barbra needs to work with more women and do a female centered album. I’m surprised she hasn’t done this since she’s a champion of women. Why not give more women opportunities to produce or write?
@romuloemilioguevara5403 Жыл бұрын
Wrong guys! There are alternative takes or spliced mixes of her vocals in Love is The Answer… not just on Smoke. In the Wee Hours she says “about the man” on the quartet version and “about the guy” in the strings version. And Guilty Pleasures is so underrated. Sure there are some questionable choices particularly with Barry’s “da da dadas” which I didn’t care for. But Hidaway is to me an instant classic. Letting Go, Above the Law are outstanding. All the Children with her climactic high note is spectacular considering her age at the time.

I don't like duets (some exceptions) but i own every cd variant of that collection because i love the artwork-- front and back covers and booklet. It was so different for a Barbra album. As for The Movie Album-- it is hit and miss for me. But i really hate when fans expect the most obvious and familiar songs to be covered. I think that shows a lack of imagination. I want to hear songs that are unfamiliar to me. Guilty Pleasures is hit and miss too. Scott loves uptempo Barbra but DIDN'T choose Night of my Life !!! That song is BUMPIN' and her vocal is out of this world. I saw her 2006 tour, so that collection is special to me. I also prefer the Quartet versions of Love is the Answer.

I get why some people are disappointed by The Movie Album. And it's because they were hoping for Greatest Hits from the Movies. But Barbra was never going to sing Diamonds Are Forever and The Morning After. She would just never, ever do that kind of album. If you can get past that and listen to The Movie Album anew, parking all preconceptions, you'll see that actually Barbra has done something kind of remarkable. She's made an album that is itself something like an epic movie soundtrack, with all those great songs tied together by an over-arching sensibility and those lush, cinematic orchestrations. I think it's Barbra's second most misunderstood album (after What About Today?), but it's not bad just because you don't like it, or don't get it.

@@romuloemilioguevara5403 There's a certain amount of bitterness in the adoration of some long-time Streisand fans--"This was her WORST album ever!"--with no regard to the era it was recorded in, the audience it was meant for, etc. If one of her albums like ButterFly had no hit singles and a funky cover photo, it's automatically doomed by the "Yentl" worshippers. I have to strenuously disagree with Scott on Guilty Pleasures. Even though I'm not a massive Barry Gibb/BeeGees fan (mainly because their lyrics are consistently hokey), I really like the work they did with Barbra here. In fact, I like some of it better than Guilty. Also, Barbra is in great voice and in a playful, sexy mood on some tracks. Hideaway and Night of My Life are among the most infectious pop-style songs she's recorded. Above the Law, All The Children, Golden Dawn and Don't Throw It All Away are also great. The only track I don't care for is Stranger in a Strange Land, which they foolishly released as a single. The album is also superbly produced - beautifully lush and layered. Listen again if you think you don't like it!!
@thebluerosemagazine3774 Жыл бұрын
Scott Here. I will listen again just for you. Although, I have listened to it recently. I agree with you about Barbra's voice. It wasn't her voice I quibble with. It is just the concepts of the songs. I don't feel the lyrics are up to her standards. But again, I love all her albums. This is just one I am not as found of. Thanks for watching.
@joshdrayton1230 Жыл бұрын
@@thebluerosemagazine3774 The lyrics are no worse than those on Guilty. In fact, maybe they're better. (Some of the lyrics on guilty are truly atrocious, eg Woman In Love - "no truth is ever a lie". No kidding?! Few of the songs on Guilty actually make sense if you stop and actually listen to them). But it's a pop album, and one of only a few Barbra albums that is unashamedly finely crafted, expertly produced pop. Most of her albums that lean toward pop (Emotion, Wet, Walls, Til I Loved You) are still largely ballads and very MOR. To me, it's a shame she hasn't done more albums like Guilty Pleasures. We've had far too many mediocre mish-mash albums like Higher Ground and A Love Like Ours - where more thought went into the covers than some of the song choices.

Barbra has always been an outlier among my musical interests. As a child, I listened to the rock and pop of the '60s and '70s (introduced to me by my older siblings) and as a teenager and beyond, I was immersed in punk/new wave/alternative music. I pretty much loathed show tunes, but Barbra resonated with me anyway, most likely because she was such a huge talent and a force of nature. Barbra wasn't just a performer; she was an entire genre unto herself. That said, I went through a long period, starting with BACK TO BROADWAY, during which I lost interest in her musical output. I stopped buying her albums and was somewhat dismissive of her work. My interest was revived when she played Philadelphia on her "Back to Brooklyn" tour, but I still felt ambivalent about her more recent albums. Thanks to these videos and Matt's excellent book, I've been revisiting all of Barbra's albums and filling in the gaps in my collection, and I have to say that GUILTY PLEASURES has become my new favorite Barbra album. I don't think that GUILTY PLEASURES could have had the same impact as GUILTY because much of GUILTY's appeal came from the startling success of what was, at the time, an unlikely collaboration. It wasn't just that GUILTY was a great album. People were genuinely surprised and delighted by how well Barbra and the Brothers Gibb worked together. With GUILTY PLEASURES, there isn't that element of surprise, and GUILTY is arguably the hardest act of Barbra's career to follow, but nonetheless it's a lush, gorgeous album that spans genres yet feels unified. There is so much to recommend, and with each listen, I find something new to gush over, but at the moment, I'll praise: "All the Children" as one of Barbra's most convincing attempts to sing rock or light rock; the way the arrangement of "Without Your Love" transitions from straightforward pop to a 1940s feel and then back, creating a aural flashback/fantasy sequence as Barbra recalls her relationship through a romantic filter before being drawn back to reality; the updating of '50s doo-wop on "Come Tomorrow"; the dreamy sensuality and yearning of "Hideaway". I'll echo Matt's suggestion to revisit GUILTY PLEASURES but elevate my urging to the level of Scott's championing of TILL I LOVED YOU. It's a terrific album and a neglected pop masterpiece.

Sorry guys, but I consider The Movie Album one of Barbra's least successful albums. Maybe she just should have done an album of Beatles covers instead. Or better yet an album dedicated to Doris Day. For heaven's sake, even an album of overblown orchestration covers by Queen. I do agree, The Movie Album is brilliantly recorded with lush orchestrations. This is where her "team" let her down to the determent of the album. The album did sell close to 700K units in the USA. But there has to be some disappointment by Sony/Columbia and even Barbra knowing this album did not achieve the success it should have - and it was due to the material. Please review The Broadway Album, Guilty, TWWW, Back To Broadway, etc - when material is good, the people will buy it. (Matt, you're right, the cover is Photoshopped. Shot by Terry O'Neill - the original can be found via Google pic search)
