the mittens you made for your daughters look like little acorns, soooo sweet! Glad to hear you're feeling better! Your shawl turned out beautifully, I actually really like the transition you made from the darkest shade to the next. There's something "handspun" about it that really appeals to me. And great job on your husband's sweater. It looks so good on him!

I've use regular fabric paint and it's worked pretty well as a 'non-skid' surface. I'm currently making socks for my 4 yr old grandson and using the sock recipe. I was concerned about the socks fitting around his feet, so I ribbed the entire foot. He loves them! I need to finish the second sock so he can have them to wear to school. I think the pattern is the Super Easy Toddler Socks. I also downloaded and printed a sizing guide from StrideRite Shoes and marked all three of my grandsons' feet on it so I can make them all socks.

Hi Lindsay! As far as patterns for kid's socks, I've always used the Tube Socks for Kids pattern by Jane Richmond. I love this pattern because the socks don't have heels, which means that the socks can fit for much longer than they would if they did have heels! I've knit multiple pairs for my niece and she loves them!

Ive knit tin can knits free garter sock for my kids using knit picks worsted (wool of andes) which was great (machine washable, and they've held up really well). Amazingly, they have passed their socks on down to the next kid without holes or tears, so thats pretty great! Also, last year I knitted them each a pair with knit picks stroll gradient and really loved it as well--super soft so they liked it, and they loved the fun bright colors. Those have also all held up great without holes. I mean, I'm sure they slip around in them but my kiddos didn't wear the socks with the grips on it so I think they were used to it. Your daughter would adjust but yeah there could be some falls/slips. Maybe starting with a toothier yarn would help them not be too slippery. Anyway, lovely to see you back! I dyed with marigolds last night (for the first time) and it smelled great to me but I was thinking there would be NO WAY i could have done any dyeing while pregnant. Just the smell of the sheepy wool and then the dye baths are way too intense! So I don't blame you. BUT I sure do miss your beautiful yarn and can't wait till you're back at it either. Congrats on another girl!
@AWoodenNest6 жыл бұрын
BM Kimball Thank you! 💛 Yeah, I saw your marigold results on Instagram this morning. Sooo beautiful. But yes, the smells I typically enjoy are just too intense right now. Or they were, anyway. I’m hoping I’ll be able to tolerate them a bit more this week. It just makes me wish I had an outdoor dye space set up. Perhaps someday. ☺️ Thank you for the sock tip! I think garter socks would be great fit-wise and would perhaps be a bit grippier on out wood floors.

I just watched your podcast for the first time & really enjoyed it. Looking forward to more. I used the pattern rose city rollers littles for my daughter’s first hand knit socks. They are shorty socks and the pattern includes helpful directions on measuring her foot to determine size. With that, I got it right the first time. I also stitched the foot a few extra rows longer, knowing that her feet could grow quickly.

Puff paint. I used puff paint with my son’s socks (hand knit and store bought) when he was a toddler. It’s really easy to control and you can put the it onto hand knits in lines from toe to heal pretty easily.

My grandkids aged 2-10 love their knitted socks and have just asked for more (to my surprise!) for advent. I have never used grippy stuff but I have seen it is available. In German you can get charts for basic socks that tell you how much to cast on for sizes baby to large men‘s, how many rows for the shaft, stitches for heel, length of foot etc. I bet the bigger international companies have them online (Regia, Schachenmayer...)!! Congrats on your growing family 😁

Lindsay, The row of green that you missed on your mittens can be duplicate stitched with green and no one will know the difference. It will look like the other stitches. I saw this on another vlog but I can’t remember who’s it was because I would love to give them credit. This idea hadn’t occurred to me but when I saw it I thought it was brilliant and I had to share with you. I hope you find it helpful and if I remember where I saw it originally I will come back and tell you. Happy Knitting!

Hey Lindsay! My daughter just turned 4. I've knit her socks and had the same concerns as you about them being slippy. I decided to call them her "bedtime socks" and she pulls them on at night for a cozy bed time. There is also a product called "sock stop" that you can buy on Amazon if you want to make her socks grippier. :-) Yours is such a soothing podcast and I look forward to each new episode. I'm so glad your feeling better! I just had a baby and the memory of first trimester is not a pleasant one. 😝 Have a wonderful day!

Ice knit socks for both of my kids, ages 3 and 8. I do not used grippy glue. They mostly go barefoot in the house, but have learned that the socks can be a little slippy, so they are just careful when wearing them. You can look at my projects for pattern names or numbers, for each kid, if you like. (SeraM on ravelry) I know a good starter, is a free pattern from Purl Soho Toddler Socks. For my 3 year old, I use 44 sts on a US 0 or 1, depending on yarn. Good luck! I adore the shawl you made!!❤❤

When I knit socks for my little boys, I use the fish lips kiss heel pattern for the cut-out, it gives me the numbers I need to cast on, I do toe up, then I use for the foot a ribbed foot, and a stockinette bottom of the foot, to make them last longer, they grow so quick, and ribbing is a bit more forgiving, then I do the flk heel they work fine for me and the kids, and a ribbed leg, I never use or used a grip on the foot, sometimes they put on some house slippers, We have wooden floors so they can fall or slide, but they just did not do that, maybe because they are used to normal socks...
@AWoodenNest6 жыл бұрын
Esther Duijzer Yeah, I think that’s what makes me most nervous. She’s only worn socks with grip, so I worry about the transition, especially on our narrow staircase. It sounds like most kids are pretty adaptable, though, so I think we’ll try socks without glue first and see how it goes. Thanks for the sock tips! Really appreciate it. 💛

I have used the cabin fever sock book ( it’s available on ravelry) to make socks for my kids. It has a chart that tells you how many stitches to cast on based on the gauge you have (so you can use it for any kind of yarn) and your kid’s shoe size. It has worked great for me!

I do find hand knit socks really slippery! I've never tried the glue on the bottom though. I just knit socks for my 4 year old niece, I did toe up and just kept increasing until they fit my son (who is almost 5) thinking if they fit him, then she can grow into them. I think I ended up with 52 stitches on a size 2.5mm needle. I would highly recommend (as tedious as it is) knitting the whole sock in rib as it is so much easier for little people to pull them on, my son even struggled with shortie hand knit socks as you really had to work the foot on - but these ribbed pair are so much easier. Good luck and it was nice to hear your soothing voice again today! xx

Nicola Keely Thank you Nicola! Yeah, I agree about the ribbing. I’m planning on a 2x2 simple sock for the stretch factor and elasticity.

Whenever I make slipper socks I use hot glue and just make little dots on the bottom. The glue sticks in between the yarn and provides just a little bit of grip. Just any hot glue would work.

I’ve made handknit socks for little ones but they always seem to fall off easily or they say they are too hot, so sort of a waste of time. However mittens, hats, leg warmers and some smaller scarves were happily received and used. All your finishes turned out great, the shawl will be great for keeping belly/baby warm over the winter. Hope you can stand the dye smells soon, you dye the prettiest natural shades.
@AWoodenNest6 жыл бұрын
jillipepper5353 Me too! I miss dyeing so much. I think I’ll be able to get back into it this week, even if so have to stick to the less smelly dye pots for awhile. Thanks for the tip on the socks. My daughter does tend to run warm, so socks might not be ideal for anything but cold winter days where we are outside. If that’s the case, then we might not need to worry about glue at all since she won’t wear them frequently. I am concerned about fit issues though.

Yay for it being a little girl and for you feeling better 🤗 i bought the sock glue, but havent tried to use it. The last pair of socks i knit her keep coming off because of the short row heel (i’m giving up on short row heels) 🙄 but even so i still think she doesnt slide around so much anymore as when she was little. I will probably use it for the little guys socks when he starts walking.

Aito is gorgeous and a wonderful frame for your face - do you tie the tails crossed behind your back to free your hands when you go outside?
