maths guy here. quaternions are used mostly for speed. without a good amount of background, they're essentially unreadable, but in processing, they save polynomial time versus more familiar, more readable rotational and kinematic arrays. no one will read this, but this is probably the main the reason why. the next most likely would be, there are quite a few quaternion purists who elect to use them even when they aren't necessary, so who the fuck knows haha
