This month, Eddie tackles the contentious subject of the Black and Tans and their arrival in Ireland in 1920. He traces their history as constables recruited into the Royal Irish Constabulary, and the reasons and incentives that brought them into the conflict. He explains how the terror they inflicted on the Irish public resulted in a profound sense of resentment and fear towards them. Burnings, raids and beatings, the Black and Tans exposed the Irish to a reign of intimidation and dread. Comprised of stories and facts recorded with people who lived through that era, Eddie shows the different aspects of their occupation and the dark legacy left in their wake.

What I like about your podcast Eddie is I occasionally have to do a bit of research to know what you are talking about...dipping in deeper to a historical subject is always a good thing. Thanks for posting!

A well balanced account Eddie , Thank you . Not an easy subject to talk about ! My grandfather a Butler from Tipperary born 1900 had many not so nice stories to relay , but like in any war there are always more than one side to the account ... The IRA eventually burned down Fogarty Castle where his family worked to stop the place ever being used again by the oppostion ... On the other hand , my Murphy family lived in Kilkenny and worked at Mount Juliet for Major McCalmont , they were paid a visit by the IRA who only took arms / guns etc and did not burn down the beautiful house or harmed the family ... The McCalmonts were very good employers and this apparently saved them from a worse fate . A great account Eddie and wonderful to hear you again . x

Thank you, so interesting. Here's a story my grandmother told me, she hated the tans. Her uncle, a young priest of 21 years ran to help a couple who were running from the black n tans, they were all shot dead. Sad times.
