EA, Disney, KZbin and other entertainment companies retracting their content from Russia may seem inconsequential and lame, but it puts pressure on the citizens and families of oligarchs in a way that cannot be easily sidestepped like economic sanctions. For example, baring Russia from the Olympics and World Cup is an ego blow that cannot be avoided by having alternative bank accounts (as is a way for oligarchs to reduce the impact of having their assets seized). Hopefully that makes sense, I am an international relations university senior and I wanted to maybe help explain.
@mekko9022 жыл бұрын
I think you're spot on. It's about humiliating/isolating Russia, not just financially, but culturally as well.
@rimtiggins60782 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Isolating the country culturally as well as financially is important, even if the companies will pat themselves on the back while doing it.
@DolgovaPolina2 жыл бұрын
wow really cool, but the truth is that those bans influence not families of oligarchs, but us, general public, Russians that has nothing to do with this situation. This is literally a discrimination by nationality
@foofoolame91272 жыл бұрын
@@DolgovaPolina it’s not discrimination by nationality you paper straw, it’s to cut them off from the world, the citizens of Russia will leave their country and the economy will die, we’re not doing it because they’re Russian it’s to send a message to the Russian leaders that we can push them out of the world. Now a lot of Russians wouldn’t be able to leave so there’s gonna be mass suffering, but Putin brought it on his own people, that’s what happens when one voice speaks for millions

In regards to your opinions about liberalism, I started researching linguistics and I rabbit holed until I found a book by a linguist about "Woke Racism" which addresses the dangers behind reactionary/performative activism. I haven't read it yet but I think it will really challenge my viewpoints so I look forward to it. BRB gonna find the exact title... Woke Racism: How a New Religion Has Betrayed Black America by John McWhorter (what a great last name!)
@libertythruknowledge20852 жыл бұрын
It is a good book; well worth the read. You will probably walk away from reading it with more questions than when you started. Use those questions and dig deeper because you will not find answers any other way
@_Moe2 жыл бұрын
@@libertythruknowledge2085 I just finished it. I thought it was a well-written argument overall and I agree with most of his points. Some points were challenging and did trigger some cognitive dissonance that I still agreed with eventually. And there are some parts I'm still chewing on because he glossed over the counter-arguements that didn't suit his thesis with blasé dismissal much like The Elect do when confronted with good faith counter-arguements. I don't think I disagreed with him on any major arguments, but I definitely disagreed with some of the smaller points he made. His defensive tone, though a little tedious at times, was appropriate because it is a defensive text; still, he sometimes resorted to the same contemptuous tone of the people he's supposed to be criticizing, which was lazy rhetoic at best and hypocritical at the worst. His proposal of abandoning drug prohibition, teaching kids to read phonetically, and for vocational education (instead of overvaluing 4 year colleges and academic elitism) were the highlights of the text and I couldn't agree with him more. I think they're realistic and will affect real change if they're ever put into action. I also heavily agree with his dismissal of the "impact over intent" rhetoric that gets thrown around in Elect spaces. Both of those things are important in varying degrees depending on the situation they're being applied to. On that point, while I appreciate your review on the text (which is why I'm returning with my own review), the rest of your comment along with the "you won't find answers any other way" statement was not needed. In fact, it deterred me from picking up the book right away. I know how critical thinking and research work; that's why I read a book I knew would challenge me. Perhaps I misread your *intent* because your patronizing rhetoric only caused me to feel resentful instead of inspired to do something I was already planning on doing.
@libertythruknowledge20852 жыл бұрын
@@_Moe I very much appreciate your thoughts on the book! I think some of the flaws that you pointed out are great points and agree with you. Thank you for sharing them. First, I want to apologize for sounding patronizing, that was not my intent at all. I meant, albeit lacking clarity, that oftentimes we exist (all of us) within our own spheres of influence where we do not hear opposing views, particularly when they are less popular. Finding answers, in my opinion, requires reading and thinking about opposing views, which I make an effort to do as well. I reread my own comment and you are right - it does sound patronizing. I apologize again as that only causes challenges to actual conversation. Now that you have read the book, do you have any recommendations for me?

I honestly think that the refugee part lacks context. Of course European countries react different to European refugees than non-European refugees. It helps everybody if refugees are taken in mainly in neighbouring countries, because of more similar cultures and in case they want to/are able to return. If that is not possible, of course more countries should provide space. And also, Americans would react different to a war in Canada than somewhere in Europe, so this war also affects Europeans more than the war in for example in Afghanistan. But of course I condemn every war, and the racism in reporting them disgusts me.
@joselyn86042 жыл бұрын
Americans would also most likely take in refugees from canada and not mexico
@tereza36982 жыл бұрын
Exactly. For Central and Easter Europe, you can't blame us for reacting differently to this war than any other, first of all, it's in close proximity to our borders, we are all Slavs, so we share a lot of culture and a part of Ukraine was a part of Czechoslovakia at some point, big Ukrainian minority already lives here, so you can't blame Czechs and Slovaks for being more open to welcome refugees from Ukraine. For a lot of countries there's also the aspect of shared enemy and shared historical trauma of Russia always being the aggressor. Especially Poland and Baltic countries hate Russia, so ofc they want to help the other side win. You cannot put this racist American narrative of 'blonde people' into our mouths, because the context for C and E Europe is very different.
@eviniks90882 жыл бұрын
