I'm seeing this two years past your post date. About the waste...I love this way of making the flying geese since I don't have to worry about perfect seams corner to corner on the 45 degree angle. This is fantastic and so much quicker than any other way I have seen. Thank you, Jean!

Glad your feeling better. To clear up the "waste" topic it is all in your outlook. You can sit and iron or draw lines on your squares to sew them and then probably cut them and throw them away. Very few people save those scraps. I can see this is faster and on point. Thanks for another great video!

Hi Jean, Random question. My sewing machine has quit and it wasn't very old. Anyway I usually buy Brother, as I'm not as serious as you are. My one that just quit was maybe two years old. The one before was about 12 years old. Do you have a recommendation? I don't want to spend as much as you as I'm not where you are. Thanks so much!

I love my Brother but there are many straight stitch machines (without all the bells and whistles) that can be had (in my area) for about $600 - $800. That might seem a lot but for a sturdy machine to withstand the rigors of quilting, it is not. Of course, you can go and get an inexpensive machine from Joanns or Walmart and I suppose they are okay, but probably won't stand the test of time. I actually am looking at a Juki 2000qi - fabulous straight stitch quilting machine that can be had for about $700+, but a great machine! My friend just got one and LOVES it!!

I decided to do the one seam geese on my recent quilt because I was going to be "wasting fabric" anyway by sewing the squares on and having to trim them because the pattern called for it and I wasn't aware until today of "no waste" flying geese. So, everything was already cut out for me, so I was very happy to see the one seam method with the geese. :)

I can see now how cutting the inch off and making the geese piece shorter makes less work after. I'm not worried about wasting fabric sewing it the way you are making it makes a more uniform flying geese. The way I look at it the more seams you have to sew to make the geese the more margin for error which makes for squaring up in the end and who wants to have to do that all the time.

The maneuver of flattening the big triangle to make the geese is called a "squash fold" in the art of paper folding, origami. You can slide your index finger up into the triangle and it opens up over your hand. Then flatten. You are squashing the mountain folded edge of the big rectangle. Fyi

Let's talk about that cutter! Can you cut as many layers as with a regular cutter? Is that a 6" x 24"? Has anyone else used other brands of this ruler or have recommendations for a ruler cutter?

This Fiskars cutter is the best! And yes, it is 6 x 24. I also have one called 'Sew Easy' (designed in Australia Cutter/Ruler Code NL4186) ...(that's what's printed on it). It is a 4 1/2" x 26" ruler. Just as nice as my Fiskars.

Jean, I love this method! People could get creative by pulling it back and top stitching the curves like you demonstrated. But maybe they could find a way to add a little puffiness with a bit of batting, or even sew some type of ribbon or lace behind the diagonal open edge. There's so much someone could do with this method with the time you save in their initial construction. And of course, for the naysayers, well, there's always other videos about flying geese; there's the 4-at-a-time, there's one method by making 20 at a time from Kits by Carla, there's no-waste flying geese, and on and on and on. You're absolutely right though, if you don't like the "waste," then don't make them this way. It's just that simple. Good to see you are on the mend, and best of luck with your oral surgery next week.

Aw thanks so much! I bought a Nikon D3100 about six years ago. I have no idea how 95% of it works ~ I'm no camera buff at all, but my kids said it was a nice camera! I had used a cheap 'point and shoot' camera...now I have an expensive 'point and shoot' camera!! :) It is just a camera but has the 10 minute video recording ability ~ I use that for these videos. My son also bought me an inexpensive tripod which holds my camera when I am video taping.

With regards to not liking the seam coming thru why not either trim it away from the back or maybe a fun step further before you sew the edge down and trim stuff a small triangle of batting in it so when you go to quilt it its a trapunto effect...

I noticed that there is no steam in the iron. Why do u prefer not you use steam?

I don't use steam (or any water in any iron) due to spitting, scorching, spilling, staining, but mostly due to the distortion that I FOUND happened with steam on my cotton fabric. I like a nice hot dry iron, but always spritz with water directly onto the fabric or sizing/starch where it calls for it.

On most quilting blocks, seams are always pressed 'to the dark side' :), as agreed amongst most quilters. Why? Almost always to ensure a sturdier seam, so I read. However, it has been brought to my attention that THIS particular seam COULD HAVE been pressed open!! I will listen and learn for the next time!! :)

yes pressing to the dark side has been the rule of thumb but today opening the seams an pressing helps to have less bulk in the seams when quilting so of heard.
