If you’re FMQing on ANY machine, regardless of brand, age, model, features, etc., you should set your stitch length AND width at zero with zero presser foot pressure. You should always drop or cover your feed dogs. This is a no brainer. Why? Because YOU are the one determining how fast or slow the fabric/quilt moves under the foot, as well as the direction. YOU also determine the speed of stitching by how hard you press down on the foot pedal. If your machine has a speed control function, this is a wonderful aid to use because you just set it at a comfortable speed for you and step down on the pedal all the way. Basically, you’re using the foot pedal as an on-off switch. You want the FMQ foot to glide freely over the quilt, but at a height just above the fabric - approximately between 1/8” and 1/4”. The most noteworthy setting that Jean mentioned was her tension setting of 9, which is quite high. THIS is the variable that will differ from machine to machine. CAVEAT: If you have a stitch regulator of some type with your machine for FMQing, then use the settings recommended by the manufacturer. This may involve setting your stitch length at something other than zero. I have an older Bernina with the stitch regulator, and it requires me to set the stitch length at my preferred length for FMQ, e.g. 3. I rarely use it because the throat area is so small, and I typically make Queen or King sized quilts for gifting.

My retailer told me that Coats and Clark thread is terrible for my Baby Lock machines (I have 3 but not a Jazz). They said using it would land my machine in the repair shop more quickly. I don’t know why, but I don’t need that! I mostly use Metrosene as that is what my local sewing center sells and approves for Baby Lock. My Accomplish straight stitch machine also has the large throat and a free motion foot. I have not tried it yet but wouldn’t be surprised if your settings for your Jazz are similar for the Accomplish. At least it’s something to try if needed. Thank you for the info!

Jean you are awesome! I have had issues with two different machines with the stitching and like you felt I tried everything, but I really haven’t and after watching this, I will troubleshoot the issue again! Thank you for sharing your struggles, as many of us struggle too and it gives hope that we can figure it out.

I bought a baby lock Allegro. I returned the first one cause I couldn’t get the right tension. Very similar issues. They replaced it and I have since had better luck with the second one. It seems the mechanical aspect of the machine is not great quality in order to make the machine affordable. I am so new to machine quilting although I have done several stitch in the ditch quilts with my baby lock Rachel and now at least one with my Allegro. I was disappointed that the allegro was such a challenge. I appreciate your videos! Thank you.

Jean, I had a love/hate relationship with my jazz 2. After about 4 years, and many many quilts I just bought a new Janome with an even bigger throat! Your settings are spot on…..the most important part being that tension set at 9. Even that eventually became a problem for me. My service man suggested a second bobbin case set with a looser tension to be used only when FMQ. He set me up with that and she was fine for probably another year or so. Basically it was an amicable divorce. - I’d decided to not put anymore money into keeping her happy. Anyway, if down the road you run into problems again, you might think about an alternative bobbin case. Good luck! K

Thanks so much for watching me:) I LOVE my JUKI!! It's one of the best machines I've owned. I actually own TWO Jukis' ` one mechanical and one computerized, both doing different tasks. However, I decided to splurge and try out this Baby Lock because it does both things:) It is a simple mechanical machine but it has just a few decorative stitches as well as the straight stitch. So it combines the benefits of my two Jukis'. However, I go back to the Jukis' regularly also:) Great to have back up machines:)

I bought a JAZZ machine 6 years ago. I've not tried free motion quilting on it, but have done lots of straight line quilting. The increased surface space is the main reason I purchased it. I'm happy to do quilting and apply binding on it, but am not happy with piecing quilt blocks or tops. No matter what I try, the machine wants to chew the fabric. So, I use my Elna or Janome for piecing. My JAZZ machine is quite picky about thread, absolutely no Coats and Clark! It's also picky concerning the bobbin. I often have to make a second attempt. I was hoping I had purchased a machine that "did it all." It has saved me from taking all my quilt projects to the long arm quilter. So glad you resolved your FMQ issues.😊

My Jazzabelle likes to have her stitch length at 0 even though the feed dogs are down and it def works better with the needle in the right position instead of the center but every machine is different just like same make/models/year cars will drive differently. The FB group is really helpful and I like to check in with them often. And I agree if we get frustrated we need to just step away and take a break.

First, thank you for making the wallet very nice. Well I have attempted to make it and it’s done not perfect but it’s done the one thing now I’m not sure of is how you put the magnetic clasps on? I have used this types of clasps before, but my project was kind of semi open where I was able to put the gadget on in the back and bend prongs in this case I’m not sure ?
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory
@jeantruelovetruelovequiltsfory Күн бұрын
Thanks Shirley:) If you notice, I used a SEW ON magnetic clasp. The ones with the prongs HAVE to be put on BEFORE construction of the finished wallet. I didn't do that because sometimes I get the placement of the snap in the wrong place so decided to just get the sew on ones:) That way I can figure out exactly where I want the snap. It's easy to sew on...just be careful to lift the top layer of the fabric when sewing on.

Jean, thank you for an updated review of the Baby Lock 2. I was the person whose daughter purchased the Baby Lock 2 after seeing your first review. I did share this video with her as well. She will be trying some free motion quilting on this machine at some time and wanted to show here that it can be done and do not get discouraged if she has any issues with it. She loves the Jazz 2 so far and really loves the large throat space of 12 inches. Her original Singer she purchased had only 3 to 4 inches of throat space and she made 3 beautiful quits with it. Thanks again for another honest and informative review. Keep them coming.

Jean, so true 😂. I've been sewing for about 70 years now and step away from that thing and come back later or preferably the next day is best advice you can give. I remember when I was first learning how to put a zipper in . I ended up throwing the thing across the room and leaving that mess. I did get myself together at a later time and learned to put those zippers in . In record time no less. On a more recent note, I've been teaching my granddaughter how to sew and make a quilt and we had a very similar experience as yours. The machine was acting up pretty much like you described that yours was doing and I just wasn't getting anywhere with it so we gave it up and she went home. The next day I thought I'd give it another go and redid all the threading and bobbin and I guess was just tired or something the day before because it started sewing just great 👍. I think we all have those days occasionally. Hopefully they're few and far between. I'm hoping you and your family have a wonderful new year. [No more of those catastrophes.] ❤
