Fyi, creepers will avoid cats so if you can befriend a cat or a few and sit them around your place they'll keep creepers away

Clay blobs can be smelted into bricks. If you combine 4 blobs together you get terracotta and you can dye it any color. You can also glaze the terracotta to add designs. Gravel can be added to sand to make concrete powder, then you add water and make concrete blocks.

You aren't doing anything wrong. Mobs will spawn during the night. It's just not as likely if you light up the area well enough.

You could always play on peaceful. I play on peaceful because if don’t then creeper always gets me 😂
