I use to ride the Cowes train with my gran when I was a nipper, I think it was 6d. Did you know that there was a special rule in the BR rule book to allow the train carriages to run back into the station on its own with out the engines connected? As space was tight, the engine would go in front first. Disembark all the passengers, push the empty carriage back out then disconnect then run to the adjacent track. The guard would use the breaks to let the carriages roll back. Once stationary the engine would back onto the train ready for the return trip. I remember going to medina wharf as a kid to watch my dad load coal onto the trucks when it came in.

Very enjoyable - thanks for sharing. We're so lucky that the IoWSR does so much to keep the dream alive. We're long-time members of the society.

Walked that way many times with my dog, when we were kids use to go to the cement mills to find ball bearing balls to use as marbles, also walked the other side of the river from Seaclose Park to East Cowes

The kilns were rediscovered in 2017? We used to play in them in the early 80's... If I'd known you were going to lose them I'd have left a trail of breadcrumbs! 😂

I often think the Isle of Wight would be an ideal place to have a tram network using the old rail lines. A compact island with several towns that you could travel around by tram. It would mean holiday makers and day tourists could leave the car at home, freeing up the Island roads. Alas I am sure it will never happen. Maximising the old trackbed as cycle paths seems obvious though .

Yes unfortunately expansion in the current political climate doesn't seem to be ideal. But places like Ventnor are in desperate need of a link before their public transport system is cut off. Thank you so much for watching. 😊👍

Thanks Jack and Eleanor for a great video. I've only just discovered your channel and I must now track back and look at the rest of your videos. The lost IOW railway network is a great shame, just imagine what a tourist attraction it would be now. I've walked the Cowes to Newport line many times, such a shame it doesn't still exist. As a schoolboy I can remember crossing the old footbridge to get to Cowes High School and looking down at the overgrown platforms. Looking forward to the rest of the lines, and sorry to hear about Bones. RIP fella.

Thank you Tony for the kind words. It is a shame that not more were preserved especially the Newport and Cowes lines which would be hella useful nower days, but hey ho. All the best 🙂

Thank you Lorna! We're toying with the idea of getting a few people together with some shears and cutting back the brambles to see if the structure is still there, will have to see what the counsil says. All the best 🙂👍

Another interesting walk, thanks - makes me jealous! It's a pity there are so few remains of the infrastructure to see on this stretch. Have you watched the Ghost Train video for the Ventnor to Cowes line? It covers this section but from a totally different perspective and is a fascinating watch. Just search for 'Ghost train Ventnor'.

You're right, Doctor Beeching and his cohort, Ernest Marples ruined the railways everywhere in Britain. PS Ryde is a sad sight, much worse than 20 years ago when I last saw her. Sorry about Bones, dogs are a much loved part of the family.
