Stanhopea martiana has just opened it's first weird looking but richly scented blooms
Brassavola bahiensis and Brassavola perrinii fill the greenhouse with their evening scent
Neofinetia falcata (Vanda falcata) is one of the scented delights of summer and inspired me to add another variety to my collection
My tiny Angraceum pseudofilicornu seedling has grown to flowering size and produced two enormous (compared to the plant) flowers
I'm also having another attempt to succeed with Lepanthes calodictyon

Hi Howard I hope you and your wife are well, thank you for the reply, you have probably the best grown collections I have seen, and perfect growing conditions, I have a small Angraecum viguera which has flowered once and is just putting a second flower spike on but your plant is magnificent, I do have a very large isabelia pulchella which is growing on a large gorse branch wich has just finished flowering and find I now have 2 seed pods. I have learned quite a bit watching the way you are growing them, thank you Howard your talkes are interesting. Regards, David.

Hello, Howard, I've been enjoying your videos of your beautiful greenhouse and beautifully grown collection. My own collection consists mainly of flamboyant Cattleyas and Odontoglossums, but I really appreciate scented orchids as well (all big-flowered Cattleya species and hybrids are fragrant, btw. - some very heavily so). I've got a Disa hybrid - Glasgow Orchid Conference - which smells like sweet baked good, and two Pescatorias - klabochorum and ecuadorana - which smell like sandal wood. Seeing as your greenhouse is on the cooler side, maybe you'd be able to accommodate some of the old Odontoglossums? The species naevium is fragrant (at least my specimen is, but it's one of those fragrances which is neither attractive nor unpleasant - it's just kind of there).
@HowardRice
@HowardRice Жыл бұрын
I don't do well with odontoglossums. I have naevium but struggle to grow it. On average I think my greenhouse is on the warm side for it to be happy. Currently mine are outside and they have done a bit better than other years but still do not really thrive. Coelogynes on the other hand normally grow well under my conditions. I should really stick with things that do well but can't resist trying new things. That's half the fun and sometimes a plant does well that you wouldn't expect.
@kimdreyer4970

@@HowardRice I have Odontoglossum naevium currently flowering and two crispums in spike. It's difficult to keep them cool enough during the summer months, but I keep them outside in a sheltered spot so that they can at least get the night time drop in temperature. It is definitely my impression that - while certainly a cool grower - naevium is able to tolerate periods of higher than ideal temperatures slightly better than crispum.

I really enjoy your videos. Very instructive and relaxing at the same time. Your collection is beautiful and unique. I love stanhopeas but my growing conditions are way too hot and it is a constant fight to keep her alive. I have kill a couple already 🤷🏻‍♀️ unfortunately. Your angraecum is beautiful. A few months ago i asked you how to best care for Dendrochilum filiforme and D. yuccifolium or Coelogyne filiforme and and C. yuccifolia as they are called right now. Anyway, i wanted to thank you for your help, the C. yuccifolia is currently in full bloom and while i have not noticed a strong scent it does smell like lime when you get very close. The C. filiforme has taken much longer for the spikes to fully develop. They are only just now starting to extend and will hopefully open up in a few weeks. Thanks and also thank you for the interesting video today i really enjoy them despite beeing more of an aroid buff myself. Cheers, DN

Great video, enjoyed your update and lovely blooms, thanks for sharing. Love those b.perrinii blooms, and love to have one but every time I tried to buy there wasn't a good plant for sale, just one or two pseudobulb ! Do you give them winter drier rest to have the blooms?
@HowardRice
@HowardRice Жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, They are definitely kept on the dry side in winter and seldom misted but this is to guard against rotting more than anything else. You know how dreary and cold our winters can be! I'm not sure how important a dry rest is in order to initiate flowering.

@HowardRice

I haven't timed it but I'm guessing around 4 weeks. They expand very rapidly towards the end so don't go away when it gets to that stage otherwise you might miss it.

Well, there are quite a few that I've watched recently. My method is to search the latin name of an orchid and then look at the results wherever they might be in the World. For example, I was trying to find out more about Lepanthes and found this channel's marvellous video on pleurothallids kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5-WlK1sr6-Hb5I
