OMG ... I inherited a big plastic bin of sports cards and this video has really opened my eyes! I can now make sense of the info on them, why they are stored in certain sleeves, why some are in packs and boxed, etc. Thank you so much for taking time to explain the terminology. 🙏🏽💙🙏🏽

Still going through my bin and came across some cards with holograms and a bit of gold foiling stamped on them, all stored in Top Loader sleeves. Should they be sent for grading? Thanks again!

Sorry about that the video ended and cut me off and then battery was to low. So, as I was saying I was in the bleachers at a Cubs game with my mom and I was crying and the beer man handed me a baseball card and read the entire card to me I was hooked. Every time mom took me to a game he always gave me a baseball card and read it to me and that’s how I started collecting. Long story short, I stopped collecting in 1996 I only collected baseball some basketball and a few special GB Packers football rookies. In 2018 I started to collect again. I’m collecting NASCAR Racing cards 2018 to a current 2021 Panini Chronicles hobby box. I already knew all the terms mentioned but couldn’t stop listening. Great job I was entertained and I’m definitely going to share your video. Thanks

What an excellent video. I am one of the people who was out of the collecting for many years and started again by opening up boxes of stored cards from the 80s and 90s during the COVID. Mostly hockey with a few baseball sets. I still struggle with the 'new' terms for the collecting like SP and SSP. The internet helps for sure in identifying these cards. I have a lot of cards to send in to get graded and I think all grading firms should show the scoring like BGS. All 3 of the grading companies mentioned should carry the same weight when selling but it doesn't seem to be the case. One thing I have noticed is that the centering of cards is more true now than 30 years ago; where off-centre seemed a lot more frequent.
@ParlayJaySports4 жыл бұрын
@Graham I’m so happy this video helped you! It was made for your exact situation! Love hearing the “return to the hobby stories”- you are dead on with centering having improved but it’s still not perfect- I’m surprised as well that PSA still doesn’t show sub grades- I’ll need to research a bit but wondering if there are any legal reasons involved - seems like a no brainer for them to do it but for some reason they don’t. I hope you got to relive all the memories of when you last opened those 80s/90s cards as you went through them- check out my video on sorting your cards- that sounds like it’s a good next step for you! Also have many other videos you should check out on terminology and getting reacquainted with the “new hobby “ all the best! And thank you for watching and subscribing!

I'm just getting back into collecting after a number of years. There's new terminology I'm learning but also some things have changed. Penny Sleeves were called sleeves and card savers were called semi rigids. I might not get used to calling them card savers and I will probably get weird looks for calling them a semi rigid.
@ParlayJaySports2 жыл бұрын
those are still the terms too though so you won’t get strange looks still calling them that! For sure there’s allot of new terms that will take some getting used to like “parallel” etc! I’m glad you found this video helpful!! Thank you for liking and subscribing!

Jay, where does an updated card fit in there? Would it be a parallel card?
@ParlayJaySports3 жыл бұрын
Hey Maurice! Maybe by update you mean the Topps “Update” set? That is usually the third in the series of Topps “flagship” releases that they put out every year toward the end of the season- usually popular for key rookies that were called up to the majors late in the season

Someone mentioned to me that screw down holders can damage cards. Is this correct?
@danjoseph83924 ай бұрын
Yes, the areas around the screws have more pressure put on them due to the screws being too tight. This can cause those areas to get pressed down flatter than the rest of the card and can alter the texture of the card in that area too. Not always super noticeable, but should be able to see the change with a magnifying glass.
@ParlayJaySports4 ай бұрын
Yes it can - for the most part screw downs have been replaced by the mag safe or one touch holders which have a groove in it to protect the card from behind flattened. Some screw downs had that groove which made them safer- but earlier models were completely flat and could flatten the card.

Great video. Although I think you may be overestimating the desire for sub-grading. Especially now that the eBay Vault is soon to become the PSA vault. Personally I only consider buying cards graded by PSA.

Thanks, Parlay Jay, this is a very helpful video. I have a couple of questions: what does “Break” mean? I am part of a Facebook baseball card group with “Buy, Sell, Trade, and Break” in the name. I have no idea what that means. Also, what site or sites do you recommend a baseball card collector to have bookmarked? Thanks, I’m subscribing.
@ParlayJaySports4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom! Thank you for watching and subscribing! A break is usually where a number of folks claim a spot for one or more teams and the breaker opens a sealed box of cards on a livestream- then you get all the cards for those teams. A great website is blowout forums- great place to talk hobby and find the latest news. Thank you for subscribing!

@ParlayJaySports3 жыл бұрын
Welcome back to the fold! HTA Means “Hobby Exclusive”- usually only sold in hobby shops or of course direct from the manufacturer or on secondary markets like eBay- usually they are auto heavy (example Bowman chrome 2021 HTA actually contains only 3’autos and no other cards at all) hope this helps!

I learn something new every day, I call it hard signed card, “on card auto”
@ParlayJaySports3 жыл бұрын
That’s right! The hard signed card or on card auto is when the player actually signed directly on that card- as opposed to a sticker auto where the player only signed the sticker which was later placed on a card by someone else
