Old school Army Land Nav. As a 13F (artillery spotter) this is how we did it. I preferred it to the GPS system we had at that time. Now I us a GPS phone app that is really handy for scouting and tracking on my hunts. However I still keep the map and compass for the actual walking.

Awesome refresher on land nav! Watched it a couple times now. It would be good to mention that if you buy a compass that has an adjustable declination, then there is no need to add or subtract while taking bearings or back azimuth. Great job Arron.

Great podcast, thanks again guys. One note I would add is to always know where you are, so you never get in the situation where you're "lost" and have to resection. Practice, even on a hunt- just shoot azimuths more often than needed and get it pounded in your brain. Now I can concentrate more on the hunt and never worry where I am or going.

Can't you just adjust your setting screw on your compass for declination before starting?

Wow, the kidney stone thing happen to my brother inlaws father while we were deer hunting too. Lucky it was at night, and we drove into camp. But, I was thinking about it, what if we were out deep in the woods hunting and this happen?

That kidney stone thing is scary. I'm getting an episode on First Aid in the backcountry soon. Not sure you can do much for kidney stones though.

Anybody aware of some type of laminated pocket card I could buy with all these land nav rules printed on it? I don't know how I would remember these things out in the field. I understand it takes practice, but a quick reference card or booklet of some kind would be good. Are they out there?

what compass does Aaron use on his wrist with the gps?

It's a Suunto compass, Casio watch, Garmin GPS wrist unit. I think Aron explains them in detail on EPISODE 10- "What's In Your Pack" - And I think there are web links to those actual items on the show notes for that episode. The show notes are found on our website under each podcast.

Just curious, instead of converting grid to magnetic or visa versa, why not just set the gps to grid north to align with a map grid?

i dont think they are talking about using a GPS. you would convert if you are using a compass because a compass uses magnets to align with the north pole, and the map is using grid north. thats the point of using a map, so you dont have to use a GPS.
