My wife and I were on the same ferry, the delay at Portsmouth was because someone got on the wrong ferry 😂. They had to shuffle everyone to allow him off 😂.

not started it yet....we are coming back to UK once we have secured a property in portugal. our UK home is for sale and so the next job when in UK is visa...😬

Please do not take this the wrong way... It seems to me your issues were caused by bad prep and the Van Life draw of beach front park ups and beautiful scenery! I was also not fully prepared for our first European trip, however I did a few campsites in England before we travelled abroad to learn what is really like and what was needed and more important what is not required for your trip and I am still learning. Please do not put off by your bad experience but I would advise more homework and look to see if your Camper is suited for your requirements.
