WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I was born in Glasgow but have lived in Carnoustie, Dalgety Bay, Stonehaven, Edinburgh, Montrose, and further afield (Salamanca, Spain & Devonport, New Zealand)
WHEN DO YOU UPLOAD?
Saturdays at 10am Scottish time. Occasionally a bonus midweek video will pop up (in which case, likely to be Tuesday at 5pm)
WHY IS THERE A DELAY BETWEEN TRIP AND VIDEO APPEARING?
This is a result of doing all this myself I’m afraid. Editing takes time and I also like to schedule videos a bit in advance in case of any problems/illness/cancellations etc. Keeping my uploads appearing every Saturday morning is important to me, so I don’t want anything to get in the way of it. Also, I occasionally need some time off to recover from trips!
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I film with a GoPro11 and my iPhone12. I edit on iMovie and use epidemicsound.com for music. I also use canva.com for thumbnails etc. I also have a DJI Pocket 3 (bigger sensor) for nighttime, although I’m still getting to grips with it.
WHY DON'T YOU SPEND LONGER AT DESTINATIONS?
The usual suspects I'm afraid - time and money! Hotels especially these days make my eyes water like a true Scotsman. Also my weekly upload schedule means I need to keep on the move.
WHERE'S ALICJA?
Alicja will feature whenever possible, but she has her own life and a proper job so it can take a while for our schedules to match up. Trust me though, I prefer it when She is there too!
DO YOU PAY FOR YOUR OWN TRAVEL?
Yes I do. I've only ever accepted a complementary ticket as compensation for a previous problem. All my opinions are frank and honest reflections of travel as I experience it.

I'm Irish living in England. I used to use Ryanair but after the pandemic I didn't relish the sardine tin feeling of flying. I came into some unexpected cash and decided to try driving across to avoid the crush and take the opportunity to transport some items that wouldn't fit in my cabin bag. The ferry was a revelation. The staff, from checking-in to disembarking, were pleasant and helpful. The ferry was clean and bright with all the facilities I needed and more. I felt welcome and respected in a way that I have never felt on Ryanair. Yes, it is FAR more expensive and takes far longer, but as long as I can find the cash I will continue to use the ferry and avoid Ryanair like the plague.

I gave up with Ryanair twenty years ago. Cattle class and even though it was cheap and only an hours flight from Manchester, its the getting to the airport, through security, being treated like an inconvenience by the Ryanair staff, the sardines effect onboard and then the crush at Dublin as passengers disembark like warriors! I always drive now, Holyhead to Dublin and always on the slow ferry. Relaxing, clean and like you said, everything you need for the three hours onboard. I came back 4th of January this year and the ferry was half full. So quiet, so relaxing. You are so right, the ferry is better than flying.

Great video, as always Steve, really glad the Bay of Biscay didn't live up to its reputation for you on this occasion. I know you probably know this but, as an ex-travel agent I can say that even though 23:59 sounds like a weirdly specific departure time, midnight (24:00 or 00:00) doesn't actually exist in the travel industry. Times are always either 23:59 or 00:01 to prevent any possible confusion as to which date the time belongs to; it can seem weird but makes an awful lot of sense.

A voyage without hordes of people sounds absolutely wonderful. As for the price of the cabin, considering it's two nights of lodging, transportation and food, all on a nice, relaxing ferry, having all that available would make the difference between enjoying the trip and just enduring it. It all seemed so peaceful and calm that one could imagine that their heart rate would go down from lack of stress. Hope you enjoyed the trip, and also hope that it was warmer when you got to your destination.

It depends on the time of year you travel, in summer and spring things start to get lively (which is also good), but on those dates, believe me, it is a delight, the trip goes by quickly. The Cantabrian Sea and the Cantabrian coast are spectacular. The entire Bay of Biscay and Cantabria itself is a Wonder of the World, especially the emerald Coast. For your comment, mention all the destinations where Brittany operates are famous for being places for rest and relaxation and healing, etc. since before the 19th century. The company's careful selection of terminals makes it unique and fantastic because the destinations are jewels. Greetings

Another great one Steve. Looks like a really good mini cruise. The term bunkering goes back to the days when ships were coal driven. Coal bunker boats would come to the ships. The ships would then open large doors and the bunker boats would transfer all the coal across. But the name has stuck and it now simply means the ships being refuelled with diesel fuel. 🙋‍♂️👏👏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

@@CallieMasters5000 Marine diesel is basically a sludgy mass that is left over from making other fuels. You have to heat it to something like 50 degrees to make it fluid enough to pump from the tank to the engine. It would be absolutely, completely, totally impossible to ignite it by smoking. You've more chance igniting water. HTH.

​@@keithalexander3386 thanks. I didn't realise that it was an e-flexer. Hmm... Looks OK. but... I know some of them were being built to operate on LNG but have they actually started doing so yet? The last I heard is that there were "labour issues" with personnel not wanting to handle it. In any case, ALL bunkering has these no smoking signs. To be fair, if one of the LNG pipes fails then it won't matter whether you're smoking near that sign or the other side of the ship, you're going to Hades.

I live in Wexford town, about 10min drive away from Rosslare port, and I've not been on this trip, you've inspired me to take it this year 🙂 My folks used to play on a band that was occasionally booked on Stena Line ships, one of my favourite childhood memories was being taken with them on an overnight trip to Wales on the Felicity when they were booked to play in the bar, first time ever sailing. My uncle wrangled a visit for me to the bridge to visit the captain and crew, I'll never forget it, there was an observation area off to one side of the bridge all made of glass, floor and all, I was terrified standing out on it 😂 Thanks for stirring up the memories 😉

Another great video. I must agree with you about being a foot passenger. I always feel we are a gross inconvenience to a ferry company. I also feel the pressure when filming a drive-on into a ferry. Some ports are a bit uncomfortable with photography, and you only get one chance to get it right. Here's an idea for your next ferry trip. Instead of counting steps, count calories! That was a superb video from KZbin's ferry master.

It all depends on the harbor infrastructure. By the looks of Rosslare harbor it looks like they focus more on freight from other companies than passengers. Therefore spending millions on foot pax infrastructure might not be in the cards. DFDS has a few lorry RORO routes from there.

Travelled on Plymouth - Santander 15 years ago, a very agreeable way to start our tour of Europe. Only drawback was the car deck below us that had a car with its alarm going off through the rougher seas of the Bay of Biscay. When we arrived into Santander there was a BMW with a sheepish looking owner as they had a flat battery, everyone got to drive past them, we all KNEW whose car alarm had kept us awake in the wee hours 😂 It was a superb experience, I’d do it again in a heartbeat, just got to convince the family that it’s a great way to start a holiday!

⁠@@natsabuannam1725I use this twice a year and there are always plenty of trucks. Not many tourists in December obviously. During high season it is always full. In this video you can see trailers on the open deck (25:09) while the ferry was underway. The previous ferry was much smaller but they now use this larger and more modern one. A clear brexit benefit for those of us travelling to Spain from the island of Ireland with a vehicle.

We´ve done that route on the Galicia, sister ship, but from Bilbao not Santander. It may seem expensive but you have to know that car hire in Ireland is expensive, very expensive. We took our car and were very pleased with the service. The ships ride very well and the staff were attentive and correct. We like that we were travelling on a ship registered in France, no flag of inconvenience. If staying overnight in Rosslare St Martins guest house is ideal, really good and a well run place.

An excellent experience Steve - to travel along with you is a voyage of constant discovery - and how we enjoy seeing you "living the good life" on a very rare occasion in a proper cabin with good food and drink. On any ferry trip of a long duration it can appear tedious-but you ensure that the viewer's attention never wanders as you change the view in such a way as if we all decide to go and look at something else. The food convinced me and the wine was the topping . New ship with lovely furnishings made the trip very enjoyable . You can't keep an outdoors man like Steve in his cabin for long so the frequent forays to the different decks and nooks of this wonderful ferry . Wow I’m totally impressed with that ferry. Lovely and clean and well presented and all those amenities. That’s a ferry that I would feel very comfortable on. Always love the ferry trips. Also with the story arc from last week realising how done you were at the end of that day I love that you were picking up just in anticipation of a ferry journey, but then a small act of customer service - getting the three foot passengers on board early - was enough to carry you through a bit of an introduction on the first night. Cabin cost... on top of the ferry ticket, maybe a little pricey but definitely not super duper expensive for two nights in what looked to be a very decent cabin with decent quality food and drink inclusions. @2:47 Clearly driving onto the ship is a favourite moment for at least 2 out of 3 passengers on that bus. :) I'm with you - rugging up a bit is a small price to pay to get a lovely peaceful ferry, and I'd also keep getting drawn outside.

We used to always travel by Brittany Ferries as a kid but this was on the Plymouth to Roscoff route. I’m glad they seem to still be going strong as a company

I used the St Malo to Portsmouth return in December. Always a good experience. Returning to France my car was the only French registered car I saw. As I boarded the ferry they shuffled me around to be first off in St Malo and waved me through customs on arrival 😂

The port next to the sockets/USB in your cabin looks like an ethernet connection. It's basically connecting to the internet via wire rather than a wireless network. Some older laptops use that. Most newer laptops don't include this port - most times you now have to buy an additional adapter

At 4:33 in the video you walk through a door with scallop shells. You then turn left past a yellow arrow. These are all "Camino de Santiago" symbols. The Camino is an ancient pilgrimage route in Northern Spain. As a frequent hiker on the Camino is was SO COOL to see those symbols. You are making great videos. Terrific video Steve. Looks to be a very relaxing way to travel from Ireland to Spain. Wonderful to have the ship practically to yourself. I'm amazed it sailed with what appeared to be one lorry plus a few foot passengers! At first it seems a bit pricey but it's a comfortable cabin for 2 nights plus 5 meals and drinks - so maybe pretty good value.

Steve, I have to tell you that those hand held long exposures of Santander were GREAT! I tried that in Hong Kong and despite much effort, the pics look like I shot by the skyline doing 90 mph! So just a note to say GOOD PICS!

Great video as always. Last time I crossed the Bay of Biscay on a ferry we hit hurricane force winds and had the ship to myself... everyone was below feeling very seasick!

A nice way to spend a weekend. Santander is usually a simple entry point to all points Spain...but...take some time to explore, there's a lot to see and do; I liked up on the cliff area overlooking the Atlantic where the wind blew like billy-oh! There was a bird sanctuary (?) and some local points of (some sad) historical interest (the lighthouse)...and then take the ferry back; what a nice little week's break that would be! BTW: that first sunrise was amazing! Lovely boat...great food...peace and quiet...a fabulous and relaxing time of it! That cabin with a window and Lounge access is a must!! Cheers!

I'd been waiting for this one :) My wife and I and our two dogs did Santona's sister ship Salamanca in late May/early June this year between Rosslare and Bilbao with a car. The vessel looks identical down to the restaurant names and even the modern artwork on deck. I loved it too, but we had a dog cabin so no C club lounge, and for us both it was about £1K return. Dog cabin sames as the one above, just with two additional drop down bunks above (essential for clean bedding due to poop deck hygiene concerns) I'd do it again in a heart beat (despite the "poop deck" being awash with unmentionables by mid-crossing - I assume its similar on Santona) It was also fairly quiet when we went across, really hope it's got some kind of ongoing subsidy as the route is an absolute gem, especially for dog owners who want to get closer to the Mediterranean without having to drive through France. Santander ferry terminal looks significantly nicer than Bilbao.

What a terrific ferry. We were happy to be able to board the Northlink early on each leg and really enjoy our time on board. Your cabin on the Santona looked really well appointed and very clean. And the food in the restaurants looked super. Nice to see you enjoying a crossing in some style and comfort instead of testing the pods or sitting up all night to review super budget-friendly options for us folks. My trael advice...always get the cabin, always visit the castle. :)

The cabin looks like a basically identical unit you see in most if not all the ferries crossing between Sweden and Finland as well. I've spent my fair share in these going back and forth. Looks like a nice way to get to Santander if you don't want to sit at the wheel driving for hours and hours. Ferry rides (or mini cruises) are a nice way to travel at a leisurely pace - just bring a book, some movies and a laptop.

Absolutely worth every Euro. What a great looking ship and the food selection was incredible. Not as good as being home but it was nice to see you travel in comfort with lots of leisure time for snacking and napping. Locking you up on a ship out at sea may just be the only way to slow you down for a minute. Where to next??

There's a really nice beach where people walk their dogs right by the europort in Rosslare but it's easily missed especially at night, lol. The town is up the hill. There's a couple of hotels, a petrol station and a super market. It's pretty quiet. I've wanted to learn more about this trip for ages!

I'm the guy who gave you the idea in a comment I made on another one of your videos a few months back as my wife and I have done this route with car for the last three winters. I won't be doing it this year however as my wife died suddenly last month. Enjoy the now!

Hi Steve, Love watching your travel exploits. Two things:- bunkering is taking on fuel and ships don't have windows, they have portholes, whatever shape they are. Bon voyage!

Actually, "portholes" open and are meant to only be used in port when the vessel isn't moving. A fixed, non-opening pane of glass is a window.

Have been on many cruise ships had windows, portholes and floor to ceiling sliding doors in my cabins. The only ones referred to as portholes have been small round ones on lower decks that have covers on them to seal in bad weather. All the windows have been non opening.

What a wonderful adventure! I agree that ferry trips in the off season are delightful. I have made the ferry journey from Sitka, AK, to Washington many times in November, and even though the daylight is short, it is a wonderful three days. The cabins, as you experienced, are a little pricey, and all food is extra, but the (not too new) movies they show are free. 🙂 Phone service and any internet is non-existent, but I pass the days with reading, word puzzles and following along on my volume of maps. I haven't made this trip since 2019. The financial problems and the pandemic really affected the Alaska Marine Highway, but I still would go on another trip without a second thought. I am like the lady you could hear on the bus from the ferry terminal to the ship.....so excited for the journey. I always enjoy your ferry trips and the lighthouses! Fair winds and following seas on all your journeys!

This has been an eye opener for me: I'm a biker and I stay a bit north of Glasgow; have often taken the Plymouth/ Portsmouth ferry to Santander in the spring time. What am I thinking about? All those "loose-the-will-to-live" motorway miles through Engerlandshire (501 in total), when I could ride down to Cairnryan, and on to Rosslare (just 362 miles)! Righty-ho that's it: Spain via Ireland next time for me. Cheers pal.

Your post gave me an idea too! I live in the Algarve, I love riding and spending time in Scotland on my GS . As you suggest, rather than the ferry to the UK south coast from Spain, I should head up through Ireland ! Saves miles and is probably a more interesting ride ! (Fancy a hose swap for a week ?)

Another great video Steve. I've sailed to and from Santander, from Plymouth and Portsmouth many times. Brittany Ferries have a great fleet of ships, with first class facilities on-board. I've just booked another crossing today. By the way, 'bunkering' is a maritime word for refuelling!
