3:30 I would never do that, unless it's chewing on a battery or doing something truly dangerous. If it's chewing on my shoe, or a pillow, i just redirect his attention to a toy and don't say anything. But most people can't resist using their instinct to raise a puppy or train a dog unfortunately. Do your own research, don't just go to a puppy class once or twice..

Many years ago I was anti crate. Then I rescued a greyhound and it totally changed my perspective. Eventually we took the door off but that was her safe space. I’ve crate trained ever since and I believe both my dogs and myself have been happier as a result.

i started crate training because I thought it was a good skill.. then got so much shit from other people for it so I stopped. but she still enjoys crate-time, esp in the car. I still believe its good for certain things, and she was always in n out after a nap etc while i hung around to make it a comfy and calm place to be. she loves the car and loved her indoor crate too, but its gone now sadly, instead she has gotten another type of den she can crawl into and sleep ❤️

Hey so I don’t think dragging a dog around by the neck is in question- what’s in question is the demonization of any force, in any amount, ever, for any situation and dog. Building love and trust is paramount. But what dogs are looking for is clarity of desired vs undesired behaviors. This can be achieved through both positive and sometimes negative outcomes. The negative outcomes require significant trust, consistency, and appropriate level so that the dog doesn’t get confused and fearful. I am lucky to have a very trainable eager dog and am super positive 99.9 of the time. Dogs nip other dogs when their behavior pisses them off and the other dogs get it. It’s interesting that zak says this is entirely different than an appropriate level of physical discomfort applied by a trusted handler when a specific behavior displayed is not okay. My dog is confident in my massive affection, love and consistency- if I rarely use a lower register voice tone, or shout just his name angrily quickly and immediately (shouting is also negative people, often more scary than a prong collar) as a bad action occurs, or lightly leash pop, or if he were to try and swallow a plastic fork- a short expression of uncharacteristic intensity of my unhappiness absolutely registers- as he is eager to please and is like whoa dads not happy and he always is. I don’t use it often at all but my dog does get it.

Unrelated, but Zac: I adopted a dog yesterday after wanting a dog for about 20 years. In part, me adopting a dog was by watching your videos and gaining more confidence to give the dog a good life. I know I won't be perfect, but I'll be doing my best to use some of the techniques you've taught us over the years. Oh... and it's a puppy. So I have my work cut out for me. She will be coming home with me on Friday. I'm a bundle of nervous and excited.

Hey Zak! I followed your crate training methods from day one with my dog, and it was the best thing I ever did. I got him at 1yr old as a street dog... So he came with some 'issues' pre -installed, including anxiety and severe puppy biting to the point where I was seriously injured. If i hadn't been able to crate train him so fast with your methods i wouldn't have been able to keep him long enough to eliminate the puppy biting. 😂 I needed the safe space more than he did. He loves his crate now and will go there on his own late at night when he's done cuddling on top of me, which is a stark comparison to the first three days i had him. Thank you a million times over!

I truly appreciate you take on training and not thinking it's one size fits all approach. My first Weim puppy, Abby, was crate trained from puppyhood. She did so great and it truly was her safe space up until we moved to Florida and put it in storage. At around 7 months old, we no longer had to lock her in it while we were away at work and she never developed separation anxiety (common with Weims) and it truly was her safe space. So much so that I feel when we moved to Florida and no longer had her cage out that she developed bad fear of thunderstorms. She would burrow herself in the closet looking for safety. We should have brought her cage back out but sadly never did. She passed away 7 years ago and we miss her terribly. She truly was the best Weim! We now have 4 adopted/rescued Weims at various ages from 3 to 12. One of my 3 year old's is a foster and I need to do some fear reaction training with him.

My horse is responding well to your method for teaching a dog to take treats politely. Standard horsetraining in this case involves physically punishing the horse for being rough or else not feeding treats at all. I was curious if my horse would understand a different method. To my surprise, he does!

In the book The Life of Pi, it described how animals view crates and cages as walls to keep aggressors out and I cannot unsee it. Our dog used to go into her crate when she didn't want to go on a walk (she used to fear the rain) or during storms. Knowing her crate was her place of refuge, her fortress really changed my whole perspective on crates.

I didn't crate train my first two dogs, because I felt that it wasn't necessary and it wasn't untill it was. At the vet, when they got speyed or went for a teeth clean, they were crated. It was only with my second dog that it was apparent that one of the reasons she came to hate going to the vet's, was the fear if being crated and me leaving. Then I had foster pups, which I did crate train and an adult foster that we decided to adopt and it definitely was worth it!!! Even if you decide that you'd like your dog to sleep with you, crate training is still worth it, for many reasons, especially so when it comes to them having to be crated at the vet's, at the groomer's or if they need to recover from an injury, then then they won't fear being closed in a crate. Some work around vet visit is still a great idea for pups, makes the whole process easier.

How long should it take for the older dog to get along with the puppy? My older dog is 5 and younger is 1 now. She doesn't enjoy her all the time. She will play with her at times but she takes her treats and toys and they get into spats. My younger dog is having pee accidents and freaks out if I put her in her crate during the day but sleeps all night in there just fine.

But for the past 4-5 days it has been like soft serve ice cream. My 18-week puppy was doing great in the crate until this week - he started peeing and peeing and pooping in it - what could be causing this regression? I had his health checked. The worst part is, he likes to eat his poop, which upsets his stomach and makes him vomit, and he recently was treated for Giardia, so I’m really eager to nip this situation in the bud. I can’t watch him while I’m sleeping the way I do when I’m awake - I get up a couple times in the middle of the night to relieve him.

Using a crate for management indoors is illegal where I live, unless you take the door off entirely. I think that's a good thing overall, if a bit frustrating. I still plan to make it a priority for my (future) dog to be comfortable in there though. The law on closing the door briefly, purely for training purposes, is a little unclear. It sounds useful to condition the door closing as a positive event, I think.

You seem to think that the Veronica interaction was fine, but you had to have the smallest member of your household stand up to an escalating situation. She encountered Shade, turned away, was very worried and looking for help. Ran to one of you for protection, then went on the offensive, expecting that she would have back up if Shade decides to get more confrontational. But there was none. You two let her be chased without stating "hey stop chasing her." Very soon Shade is going to be bigger than most dogs and if he thinks there is no consequences by owners to go after smaller dogs then he might. Unfortunately, sooner or later there will be a dog that doesn't just bark back but will take the charge full on and initiate a fight.

Dogs aren't "looking for clarity" they're simply doing what comes to them naturally, and training can be done in many different ways as has been demonstrated through the ages, it just so happens that we're always learning and what we have learned as of late is that positive-based training in all animals (including humans) is the single best way to raise and train animals to not only teach them what we want them to do, but to negate unwanted behaviors from popping up due to the stress from being punished. There are countless studies done on countless animals that I think are a great way to start learning :)

My dachshund loved the crate. He'd sleep in there for 8 hours straight while we went to work! Of course as a puppy he wasn't super fond of it but over time he came to love it; we actually got him a great Dane crate and he loved the extra space and taller height, it was definitely his Kingdom!

But you would not believe the amount of people who come into my channel with highly toxic ideas that have been taught to them Prior to getting here.

Seeing as Shade is not yours, how much did you work on the relationship between him and Veronica? Will they ever see each other again after Shade goes back to his owners? I also wondered how much interaction Veronica has had with other dogs. We have seen her around all kinds of wildlife, but I'm not sure if you took her to puppy class like you did Inertia? Have you seen a change in her reponse to other dogs after having spent time with Shade?

@@ZaryaTheLaika Thank you. That makes sense. I didn't even think of puppy Mills etc. I only thought about confinement in the home. It is not illegal in Denmark but wondered since I heard about Sweden. And yes of course you're also right about the training part since there is other use - I just couldn't find the right words for it before. But thanks for the answer - as I said - it makes sense.

Didn’t use a crate with our puppy. She had a bone box we visited many times a day so she never chewed the wrong stuff. To keep her safe, all cords were way out of her reach and she stayed in one room if we weren’t home. No problems

I never crate-trained my pet dog and regretted it when he had to be confined later in his life after a quite serious elbow operation. Even when I managed to get him in and stay there as soon as we went out he somehow managed to channel Houdini and be laid on the couch when we returned home! It was laughable if his confinement hadn’t been SO crucial!

I have never used a metal crate. I have used fabric crates (one lurcher chewed a hole in hers). Marzieh was happy to sleep in her fabric crate while we still had Jasper. That was to protect Jasper because she was inclined to bully him and he was an old dog. I have put the crate away since he died.

Regarding the crate training. How about making the crate nice and cozy by placing a nice comfy bed in there with some toys and also making sure that the bottom cover is not making noise? Also, removing the pee pad from there so Shade doesn't get used to having accidents in there? Taking the puppy out every few hours will eliminate the chances of having accidents in the crate or pee pads.

Actually it’s just a towel (I do not want to encourage him to pee in the crate). And he is prone to chewing things like a bed up so one step at a time is what I’m thinking. Great thoughts!

I don't understand the crate thing. Never owned a crate. My kids sometimes fight over who gets to have the dog sleep on their bed and he is an 80 lb bundle. If no kid beds are available he has his own couch. All my dogs have been short haired. Maybe that's the difference. I feel for small dogs like Veronica. It must be like living in the land of the giants for them.

Crates can be a great thing when used properly. When mis-used, they can be torture chambers. We use crates for our dogs. When they were puppies (not house trained, likely to grab and "eat" anything and everything), they spent time in a crate if we couldn't directly supervise them--for example, when showering. This protected them from getting into things that might harm them (e.g., chewing on an electric cord) and it protected our stuff. I must admit we didn't crate them at night, they slept in bed with us!! They still go in their crates now if we're going to be gone for more than a few minutes. But for most of the time, they stay out with us. Crates can be great if you have (a) comfortable bedding in there (assuming the dog doesn't "eat" the bedding), (b) you give them something to do in the crate (a good bone to chew, a lick mat, a stuffed Kong, etc.), and (c) the time they spend in the crate is limited. Putting a dog in a crate for hours and hours and hours is cruel.

I didn’t use a crate for either dog but crate training can be very beneficial if they need to spend time at the vet or if an emergency or natural disaster arises where you have evacuate. Most hotels require your dog be crated if you need to leave your dog in the room while you go out anywhere. I travel a lot so I’ve seen this in a lot of the paperwork they have you sign on check-in.

Look at the internet there are dog trainer worst than dog daddy. Be thankful for your success. I went and observed dog daddy training. It's not even close to.what you accusing him. There are also spca representatives present during the training. So please stop this negative attack on other. Focus on how much more you can improve your training. You have some techniques that are really good.. don't waste your energy convincing other to hate another person it's not good.
