Looking pretty good. I have wired frames and thinner side bars. I've been qurious about how they'll build past the dowl rod. I don't think you'll have to worry about them outgrowing the box. My first swarm for last year only built out 14 frames. All my hives are 20 frame.

Ben thanks for the comments. I do wonder if they will stop at the comb and then start new at the dowel rod or continuous build of comb to the bottom. I have watched several KZbin videos about layens hives and it seemed like they never really filled the larger boxes up completely. let me know if any of your hives decide to swarm even though they’ve got plenty room to continue to build comb in your Layens. I know in my top bar hives sometimes they swarm even though they still have room to grow.

@@simplytopbarbeekeeping2107 Oh they will try to swarm but probably not till their second or third season. I'm on swarm watch now. I made one split with swarm cells. I could have made more but I don't have my additional 3 hives finished. I've had to knock down cells in three of my four hives.
